WEEKLY BRIEF Elul 20 5781/August 27th & 28th 2021 Parshat Ki Tavo Shabbat Schedule Plag Mincha/Maariv 5:55pm Candle Lighting 7:18pm A MESSAGE FROM RABBI STRAUCHLER Mincha/Maariv Main Sanctuary 7pm Ki Tavo 5782 Beit Midrash 7:25pm COMFORT FROM A HISTORICAL MINDSET Shabbat Morning In a lecture delivered in 1935, Gertrude Stein said: Sof Zman Kriyat Shma 9:38am Shacharit- “It is the human habit to think in centuries from a grandparent to a grandchild Main Shul 7am because it just does take about a hundred years for things to cease to have the Beit Midrash 8:30am Outdoor Tent 8:30am same meaning as they did before… and usually there is a war or catastrophe to Main Shul 9am Youth Groups 9am emphasize it…” Tot Shabbat 10:30am Outdoors, behind the Beit Midrash Today, eighty-six years and so many catastrophes later, how long does it take for things to no longer have the Shailot Utshuvot Shiur 10:30am Beit Midrash same meaning as they did before? After Using the Facilities אשר יצר Do You Say ?on Rosh Hashanahמוסף During Daf Yomi 10:30am In describing the mitzvah of bikkurim – the first fruits – the Torah instructs the farmer to approach the kohein :who is in charge at that time.” Mincha- “You have none else than the priest who lives in your days – as he is.” Main Shul 7pm Followed by Rabbi Strauchler’s Gemara shiur in the Main Shul The Ramban asks on the applicability of this gemara to the case of bikkurim in contrast to its original context Maariv Main Sanctuary 8:10pm which addresses respecting the judges decisions. Shabbat Ends 8:18pm Pre– Selichot Shiur בהקרבת הבכורים למי יביאם אם לא לכהן אשר יהיה בימיו Rabbi Netanel Wiederbank 11:59pm First Night Selichot 12:55am “To whom shall he bring them if not to the priest that shall be in his days?” Weekday Schedule To defend Rashi’s extension of this principle, we must appreciate the context of bikkurim. The pronouncement August 29th– September 3rd upon bringing the first fruits is all about time – specifically the continuity of meaning and identity across it. my father was a fugitive Aramean. (We use –אֲרַּמִ י֙ אֹּב ד ִ֣ אָּבִִ֔ י - Shacharit (only) After bringing his first fruits, the farmer proclaims Sun 7, 8am, 9am (Main) Shacharit & Selichot this very same section at the Pesach Seder.) The farmer links the experience of a “new” season’s fruit with the Mon, Thurs 6:00, 7:00 (Main) stories of the past. Every kohein is different. Meanings do change. Yet, we – as Jews – remain a critical part of 6:40, 7:40 (BM) 9am (Mon only—BM)) an ongoing story between God and humankind. That story begins in slavery and ends in freedom. It begins in Tues, Wed, Fri 6:10, 7:10 (Main), darkness and end in light. It is a hopeful story. 6:45, 7:40 (BM) 9am (Tues only—BM) It is for this reason that every year, in response to our children’s questions, we position our experience in the Mincha Sun 1:45pm (Main) context of our parents and grandparents. We are not alone in history. As we read parshat ki tavo – this year – we do so amidst the slow emergence from a centenary catastrophe. We have each experienced it uniquely. Mincha/Maariv Sun- Thurs 5:55, 7:15pm (Main) Yet, we do so as part of a community and as part of the great story of am yisrael. To appreciate this moment with historical awareness is especially helpful. We each play a part in the great story of the Jewish people.
