Levent Erel1 and Fatih Adatepe2 1 İstanbul University, Hasan Ali Yücel Faculty of Education, Müşküle Sokak No.1 Vefa 34470 Istanbul/Turkey 2 İstanbul University, Institute of Marine Sciences and Management, Müşküle Sokak No.1 Vefa 34470 Istanbul/Turkey ________________________________________________________ Abstract During the historical periods, the Mediterranean region was divided in several areas, from west to east, the Carian (Menteşe), Lycian (Teke Peninsula), Pamphylia (Antalya Plain) and Cilician areas. Cilician was divided into the Mountains (Taşeli Peninsula) and Lowland Cilicia (Çukurova) regions. Further east behind the Amonos Mountains, Antiokheia (Antakya), was a completely seperate region. All these regions were shaken by numerous earthquakes produced by main fault systems from the Aegean Sea and Mediterranean. The major geological structures are Hellenic Trench, East Anatolian Fault, Ecemiş Fault and Dead Sea Fault in the region. Along with material destruction, earthquakes also result in tectonic rising of lands. This rising fills in ports and speeds up the process of ports getting shallow. Another negative consequence of earthquakes is the drying up of the water sources or the changing of their banks. Key words: Mediterranean coast, historical earthquakes, ancient cities Corresponding author: [email protected] 241 Introduction The coastal areas of Turkey neighboring the Mediterranean Sea have been subject to numerous destructive earthquakes. These earthquakes have largely given direction to certain historical events urban architecture and the way of the life of inhabitants.

ABSTRACT Çukurbağ Polje ,the subject of this research was formed by unification of three separate uvalas. Depression which is in initial profile and a young age, is like a small model identifying formation and development mechanism of big scale Central and Western Taurus Poljes. Throughout the research, field and polje’s actual geomorphic properties were examined carefully and by this way, its geomorphic evolution was tried to be revealed together with structural and geomorhological factors that control the location and development of polje. Key Words: Polje Formation, West Taurus, Teke Peninsula, Karstification.

American International Journal of Contemporary Research Vol. 4, No. 9; September 2014 Rural Tourism and Vernacular Architecture: An Example from Elmalı, Antalya Hacer MUTLU DANACI Akdeniz University Faculty of Fine Art Architectural Department Meryem ATİK Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture Landscape Architecture Department Abstract In rural tourism, people want to experience the vernacular architectural structure, culture, and environment of that neighborhood settled in rural landscape far from the city. This means that it is not possible to mention a rural cultural landscape without the rural landscape, vernacular architecture, and cultural life in that place. Rural tourism brings total protection along with the recovery of the rural economy. It is essential in rural tourism to use the vernacular architecture in order to respond to the tourism needs. Within this context, the Elmalı District, which is a living cultural landscape area with a rich historical background, as in many rural localities in Anatolia, was reviewed in terms of used or unused vernacular architectural elements, rural cultural landscape of which might serve to tourism. For instance, the houses most of which are still in use by the villagers may respond to the lodging needs of the tourists, and the syrup buildings, which are likewise in use, and molasses-making and grape harvest will be an interesting, different cultural experience for tourists. The study also evaluates the village institutes, mills, and bee hive structures in terms of their potential of being used for tourism purpose. Keywords: Rural tourism, vernacular architecture, Elmalı, Antalya, Turkey. Introduction Rural tourism is a favorite and alternative tourism type in recent years regarding to sustainability and expressing different cultures and cultural heritage.

For sun worshippers and nature lovers eager to discover new destinations, the Fethiye region offers the perfect holiday choice. F The snow capped peaks of the Taurus Mountains rise up through pine, oak, juniper and cedar forest from a turquoise sea edged by secluded coves and deserted islands. The region was known as Lycia in ancient times, steeped in history the ruins of E past empires are sculpted from limestone cliffs. T In addition to forest, the region is rich in flora and vegetation within the diverse landscapes. Thyme and sage scent the dramatic H landscape, citrus fruits are harvested in fertile plains and liquid amber (styrax) plantations grow near the coast. İ Fethiye is located on the coast of South West Turkey where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean Sea. The international airport Y at Dalaman is connected to Fethiye by a major highway at a distance of 50km. The natural sheltered harbour of Fethiye and new E marina facilities offer haven to yachts and sea farers all year round. Fethiye is very important in terms of agriculture. The climate, abundance of water and fertile soil means that Fethiye is the N second largest tomato production area in Turkey. In recent years there have been significant developments regarding agricultural production and agritourism is flourishing as a result of these activities. A Fethiye is rich in flora and the nearby Taurus Mountains are covered in pine forests, thyme, sage, and many endemic T species, as well as citrus orchards. Goats roam wild in these mountains, giving the region the name Teke Burnu (Cape U Goat).

• Cruising in the Wake of the Ancient Civilizations
Cruising in the wake of the ancient civilizations "The ship sailed into the last harbour and anchored to leave more, As there was no longer any hope from the wind or daylight, After the light carried by the dawn had left Captain Eudemos, There buried the ship whith a life as short as a day, like a broken wave. " These sentimental lines of poem are engraved on the sarcophagus of Captain Eudemos, that is at the sea mouth of the Olympos Ancient City. These lines show one of the cue of the strong bond, with sea and the folks; which grew on the mediterranean coast of Anatolia. In this land, which is an important cultural heritage, when a civilization ends, a new one is born and the Mediterranean coast has become an open-air museum. Thought, with security concerns some of these civilizations have built their cities on rocky high mountains, important cities have always located near the sea and benefited from the abundance of the sea. These people, who remember the crazy seas, sometimes before the names of their homeland, carry their unique wines, olives and valuable goods from these ports to many places with long routes. These voyages, which were realized with limited opportunities of the era, brought prosperity to cities and pioneered important military association. In September 2019, in the rally led by DADD, the important ancient route will be used by amateur sailors, once again. On this route, we will cross the shores of the Lycian region which means " Land of the Light" . The region, that starts from the Dalaman River and include also Phaselis near Antalya on the ancient times, today called as Teke Peninsula, contains the most mysterious lands of Anatolia.
