Structural Studies, Repairs and Maintenance of Heritage Architecture XVII PI-263 URBAN REGENERATION OF INDUSTRIAL SITES: BETWEEN HERITAGE PRESERVATION AND GENTRIFICATION RAFAELA SIMONATO CITRON University of São Paulo, Brazil ABSTRACT This work is part of PhD research that addresses two recurrent problems in large Brazilian cities: the risk of demolition of important industrial buildings – due to several factors, such as the advanced state of degradation given the lack of use, the lack of recognition of this heritage in the country and the pressure of the real estate market, increasingly interested in the land these sites occupy – and the great demand for housing in central areas. The two themes – the preservation of industrial heritage and social housing in central areas – are rarely addressed together. Internationally, especially in the UK, the reuse of industrial heritage for residential use is quite common and has been going on since the first factories were closed with deindustrialisation and consequent industrial deconcentration, leading to the abandonment of several industrial sites in areas with complete urban infrastructure. Although successful in terms of preserving industrial heritage, since they enabled this heritage to be kept in the urban landscape, the adaptive reuse projects and the site’s urban regeneration usually result in the gentrification of the regenerated area through projects carried out via a partnership between the public and the private sector that, even by offering a portion of onsite affordable housing, fail to serve the local community, let alone solve the country’s housing problem. This article will show as a case study the Royal Arsenal district, in the south-east of the docks in London, with the aim of demonstrating how the urban regeneration, while preserving industrial heritage, divided the neighbourhood and contributes to its gentrification. -

Supplement to the Histelec News No. S67b December 2017 With the successful Weekend in the Cotswold organised by David Peacock, member Roger Hennessey sent his interesting electricity research of the area, for the benefit of members who joined the weekend away. It has been decided to give it further coverage. STROUD AND ELECTRICITY by Roger Hennessey The relationship between the Stroud area and electricity is a long one, summarised perhaps in the short phrase, 'From rear-guard to vanguard'. Although early developments seemed promising, Stroud took a long time to receive public supplies of electric power, even by the UK's notorious standards in the field. For example, the first English scientist to verify Benjamin Franklin's theory that lightning and electricity were the same was the Stroud-born John Canton, FRS (1718-72). In Victorian times one of the earliest enthusiasts for public electricity was a local textile magnate, Alfred Apperly, who installed electricity in his mansion (Rodborough Court) in the late 1880s. The story of electric power for the people of Stroud was, however, very different. Some of the district's many textile mills generated their own power, but repeated attempts to set up an undertaking for public supply ran into difficulties. As early as 1888 'A Ratepayer' was reported in the press suggesting the establishment of electricity undertaking for the town; soon afterwards the House-to-House Electric Supply Co supported the idea and applied for a Provisional Order [PO], but the initiative fizzled out. Another proposal in 1900 was opposed by the local Urban District Council which claimed that it was considering a PO itself. -

The Renewable Energy Review May 2011 Preface The Committee on Climate Change (the Committee) is an independent statutory body which was established under the Climate Change Act (2008) to advise UK and devolved administration governments on setting and meeting carbon budgets, and preparing for climate change. Setting carbon budgets In December 2008 we published our first report, Building a low-carbon economy – the UK’s contribution to tackling climate change, containing our advice on the level of the first three carbon budgets and the 2050 target; this advice was accepted by the Government and legislated by Parliament. In December 2010, we set out our advice on the fourth carbon budget, covering the period 2023-27, as required under Section 4 of the Climate Change Act; the Government will propose draft legislation for the fourth budget in Spring of 2011. We will provide advice on inclusion of international aviation and shipping in carbon budgets in Spring 2012, drawing on analysis of shipping emissions and a bioenergy review to be published later in 2011. Progress meeting carbon budgets The Climate Change Act requires that we report annually to Parliament on progress meeting carbon budgets; to date we have published two progress reports (October 2009, June 2010) and will publish our third report in June 2011. Advice requested by Government We provide ad hoc advice in response to requests by the Government and the devolved administrations. Under a process set out in the Climate Change Act, we have advised on reducing UK aviation emissions, Scottish emissions reduction targets, UK support for low-carbon technology innovation, and design of the Carbon Reduction Commitment. -

Cardiff 19th Century Timeline Game education resource This resource aims to: • engage pupils in local history • stimulate class discussion • focus an investigation into changes to people’s daily lives in Cardiff and south east Wales during the nineteenth century. Introduction Playing the Cardiff C19th timeline game will raise pupil awareness of historical figures, buildings, transport and events in the locality. After playing the game, pupils can discuss which of the ‘facts’ they found interesting, and which they would like to explore and research further. This resource contains a series of factsheets with further information to accompany each game board ‘fact’, which also provide information about sources of more detailed information related to the topic. For every ‘fact’ in the game, pupils could explore: People – Historic figures and ordinary population Buildings – Public and private buildings in the Cardiff locality Transport – Roads, canals, railways, docks Links to Castell Coch – every piece of information in the game is linked to Castell Coch in some way – pupils could investigate those links and what they tell us about changes to people’s daily lives in the nineteenth century. The first three volume indexes were produced on typewriters, though subsequent issues were produced by computers, and happily digital files had been preserved for these apart from one section of one index. It has therefore been necessary to create digital versions of 3 original indexes using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR), which has not proved easy due to the relatively poor print, and extremely small text (font) size, of some of the indexes in particular. Thus the OCR results have required extensive proof-reading. Very fortunately, a team of volunteers to assist in the project was recruited from the membership of the Society, and grateful thanks are undoubtedly due to the major players in this exercise – Paul Burkhalter, John Hill, John Hutchings, Frank Jux, John Maddox and Robin Simmonds – with a special thankyou to Russell Wear, current Editor of "IL" and Chairman of the Society, who has both helped and given encouragement to the project in a myraid of different ways. None of this would have been possible but for the efforts of those who compiled the original individual indexes – Frank Jux, Ian Lloyd, (the late) James Lowe, John Scotford, and John Wood – and to the volume index print preparers such as Roger Hateley, who set a new level of presentation which is standing the test of time. -
