ailing enthusiasts came out to support Kaneohe Yacht Club’s SJunior Sailing program January 12. Mark Towill, former KYC Junior Sailor and Co-founder/Team Director of Vestas 11th Hour Racing gave an engaging presentation about his recent Volvo Ocean Race. Mark’s talk, great food, great company, a raffle full of awesome donations, and a worthwhile cause made the event extra special. All donations went to Kaneohe Yachting Foundation who matched the donations up to $6,000. All together this was our largest Jr. Sailing fundraiser yet with over 130 attendees raising $17,000 for the program. Jesse Andrews, our Junior Sailing Director, looks forward to new practice sails and a new O’pen Bic Trailer to help transport young sailors to regattas and clinics around the island. Huge thanks to Kaneohe Yachting Foundation and to Mark and Tahnee Towill for their huge support of the program. Thanks to volunteers Jen and Marc Barra, Jesse and Shelly Andrews, Katie Cruise, Lindsey Arcand, and Amy Hammond. Thanks also to everyone who donated food and raffle items and who came out to support! If you missed the event, and would still like to donate to the Junior Sailing Program, please contact Jesse Andrews via the KYC Front Office. Mark & Tahnee Towill Photos: Amy Hammond

The Wahine Sailing Series is a competitive series that offers opportunities for experienced skippers and new Wahine sailors alike. The series is based around the Wahine Skipper of the Year Perpetual Trophy, established in 1997 by Ashley & Marvin Lee when they approached North Sails Hawaii to sponsor a perpetual trophy to recognize Hawaii’s Wahine skippers. Our series is unlike any other series on the island since we compete in a range of boats, from dinghies to big boats, and we hold regattas all over Oahu: Waikiki Yacht Club, Kaneohe Yacht Club, Hawaii Yacht Club, Pearl Harbor Yacht Club, Pacific Yacht Club, and most recently, University of Hawaii. The 2019 series will feature 8 regattas and a Cal 20 mini-series at WYC. In addition to great competition, the series encourages and supports the growth of women sailors, and introduces sailing to women with little to no experience. We have held events like a Rolex Clinic, boat handling/skill building clinic at Hawaii Kai Boat Club, and fun fourth “crew races” at the end of regattas to encourage new Wahine sailors to gain experience and confidence on the helm in a low-risk scenario.

So how can you get involved? Visit our column on the 2019 HYRA calendar for all 2019 regattas Sign up for HYRA blasts by emailing [email protected] Join our Facebook Group : 2019 Wahine Sailing Series* Join our email group: [email protected]
