Gandalf Racing in S. F. Bay

Having won her series in the YRA Handicap Division Association in 2008, Gandalf’s partners Ric Diola, Rob Schuyler, and Bob DeWitt decided to make another run at it this year. The adventure began with a delivery from Santa Cruz to the Berkeley Marina with a stopover at Pillar Point Harbor near Half Moon Bay. A 12-hour trip for Ric, John Wuster, and Pat Diola, with no wind and huge swells got them to Pillar Point. The next day, it was a 7-hour trip to complete the journey, again with huge swells, but thankfully no wind from the wrong direction. The first race of the Spring Series took place on Saturday, May 21 off the city front of San Fran- cisco. The Santa Cruz based crew of Ric, Rob, and Bob were joined by more SCYC crew members John Wurster, Richard Emigh, Joe Altmann, Tom Postlewaite, Ed Goldstein, Corithian sailors Ashley Zainovich and Jad Struezel, and Bob Johnson from Berkeley. We have found that with the winds gusting to 25 knots, you can’t have too many people on board! We were assigned to race in the G fleet, consisting of 7 yachts, and were given the first start off the Golden Gate Yacht Club, with an upwind leg to Blackhaller buoy near the Golden Gate. With Rob driving, we pulled off a great start, and led the fleet on the first upwind leg of the race. While SCYC has had a Corinthian member- ship program for many years, recently the Corinthian membership has dwindled to a low of 10 members. At the Annual General Membership in September 2009, a question was asked if there was anyone under 40 at the meeting. There wasn’t.
