    HAPPY CHRISTMAS (WAR IS OVER!) On March 20th 1969 John Lennon married Yoko Ono. Knowing their marriage would be a huge press event, John and Yoko decided to use the publicity to promote world peace. They spent their honeymoon in the presidential suite (Room 902) at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel for a week between March 25 and 31, inviting the world's press into their hotel room every day between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. It was their non-violent way of protesting against wars and promoting peace. Their second Bed-In took place in Montreal, Canada on May 26th 1969. During their seven-day stay, they sang the peace anthem "Give Peace a Chance", and recorded it in the hotel room on June 1st. On December 15th 1969 John and Yoko spread their messages of peace with billboards reading "WAR IS OVER! If You Want It - Happy Christmas From John and Yoko". These billboards went up in twelve major world cities : New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Rome, Athens, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Helsinki. Courtesy Yokoo Tadanori 72 REVIEW OF JAPANESE CULTURE AND SOCIETY DECEMBER 2005 War Is Over!: John and Yoko’s Christmas Eve Happening, Tokyo, 1969 Kevin Concannon On December 15, 1969, news organizations around the globe announced that John Lennon and Yoko Ono had “purchased billboard space in 11 major cities of the world to display their Christmas message for peace.”1 In the language of each city, the billboards (as well as posters, print advertisements, and postcards) read: “War Is Over! If You Want It. Happy Christmas from John & Yoko” (Figs. 7–8).2 Reports listed the cities as London, New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto, Paris, Rome, West Berlin, Amsterdam, Athens, and Tokyo. In a New York Times report the following day, however, Tokyo was conspicu- ously absent from the list, although all other cities were duly mentioned.3 In the thirty-six years since, no documentation has emerged to suggest that the omission of Tokyo was an oversight of the New York Times. Indeed, no War Is Over! billboard appeared in Tokyo that Christmas.4 Nonetheless, the War Is Over! campaign reached the city, as a major demonstration and poster campaign. This article will explore the Tokyo manifestation of War Is Over! in the context of Lennon and Ono’s broader Peace Campaign as well as the international antiwar movement of which it was an important part.

It illumines a reality that alternative cultures like drugs, alcohol, homosexuality, nomadism and mystic vision, perceived reprehensible by the contemporary mainstream culture, were in fact manufactured out of harsh American socio-political context. By projecting the painful experiences of the victims during the time of war, the research engages with the extraction of themes like terror of the nuclear arms race and poverty, racism, prison and war, buried in Lennon’s compositions and thereby revealing Lennon’s association with such subcultures to counter and to subvert the mundane, the rationality and material hunger of the mainstream culture in the then America. John Lennon as a Countercultural Icon: An Introduction This research is an attempt to explore the role of popular culture in establishing subculture in America. The anti-war songs selected for this research are the solo songs of John Winston Ono Lennon which made him a countercultural icon. The songs that have close inclination with anti-war spirit and thirst for peace that serve to frame counterculture in America are ―Give Peace a Chance‖, ―Imagine‖, ―Happy Xmas(War Is Over)‖ ―Instant Karma‖ and ―I Don‘t Want to Be a Soldier Mama‖.
