Narrator as collective ‘we’: The narrative structure of “A Rose for Emily.” English Language & Literature Teaching, 17(4), 141-156. This study purposes to explore the narrative of fictional events complicated by a specific narrator, taking notice of his/her role as an internal focalizer as well as an external participant. In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," the story of an eccentric spinster, Emily Grierson, is focalized and narrated by a townsperson, apparently an individual, but one who always speaks as 'we.' This tale-teller, as a first-hand witness of the events in the story, details the strange circumstances of Emily’s life and her odd relationships with her father, her lover, the community, and even the horrible secret hidden to the climactic moment at the end. The narrative 'we' has surely watched Emily for many years with a considerable interest but also with a respectful distance. Being left unidentified on purpose, this narrative agent, in spite of his/her vagueness, definitely knows more than others do and acts undoubtedly as a pivotal role in this tale of grotesque love. Seamlessly juxtaposing the present and the past, the collective ‘we’ suggests an important subject that the distinction between the past and the present is blurred out for Emily, for whom the indiscernibleness of time flow proves to be her hamartia. The focalizer-narrator describes Miss Emily in the same manner as he/she describes the South whose old ways have passed on by time. -

GAY FAULKNER: UNCOVERING A HOMOSEXUAL PRESENCE IN YOKNAPATAWPHA AND BEYOND A dissertation presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English The University of Mississippi by PHILLIP ANDREW GORDON June 2013 Copyright Phillip Andrew Gordon 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This dissertation is a biographical study of William Faulkner (1897-1962) as his life coincided with a particular moment in LGBT history when the words homosexual and queer were undergoing profound changes and when our contemporary understanding of gay identity was becoming a widespread and recognizable epistemology. The connections forged in this study--based on archival research from Joseph Blotner’s extensive biographical notes--reveal a version of Faulkner distinctly not anxious about homosexuality and, in fact, often quite comfortable with gay men and living in gay environments (New Orleans, New York). From these connections, I reassess Faulkner’s pre-marriage writings (1918-1929) for their prolific reference to homosexual themes. -

Department The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada ii WILLIAM FAULKNER AND SHERWOOD ANDERSON: A STUDY OF A LITERARY RELATIONSHIP ABSTRACT This study explores the nature and extent of Sherwood Anderson's influence upon William Faulkner. It demonstrates, through the use of the comparative method, that Anderson's influence is a major and continuous one. The early New Orlean Sketches strongly echo and, at times, imitate Anderson's work. Faulkner's first novel, Soldiers' Pay, was not only written at Anderson's suggestion but also published through his influence. In Mosquitoes, Faulkner closely modeled his main character after Anderson. Anderson helped Faulkner to organize some of the "folk" material in that novel. Faulkner's early use of negro characters to embody a kind of sane, healthy alternative to the world of the whites may well have been encouraged by Anderson's example. -

into literary works that were rich because of their ambiguities; into plots, characters, scenes, tone, and structure, novelists invested the paradoxes which their social mores and creative mission forced upon them. Witness the continuous emphasis on doubles, oppositions, contraries, and paradoxes in Twain, Howells, James, and lesser writers. Writers also found a shell of a so- cial role which they occupied in order to be mediators. This was the role of the gentry, not really vital in America since the Revolution. Writers tended to adopt the moral and behavioral codes of the gentry precisely because the gen- try class had become completely marginal by the end of the century, and thus provided writers with the semblance of a fixed position by which they could stand outside society yet criticize it from a superior position. (This analysis should help us to understand why, when the code of gentility finally crumb- led at the century's end, writers looked for another role that was socially criti- cal yet marginal - and adopted the point of view of radical revisionists. Writ- ers of the last quarter of the nineteenth century justified their marginal posi- tion by their adherence to the past; writers of the early twentieth-century ac- complished the same defensive claim by adherence to the future.) So much of Men, Women, and the Novel& is interesting and illuminating that I would have liked to see other lines of development followed. Certainly the roles of male and female novelists were ambiguous in very different ways; and the differences I believe, could be drawn. -

major work" but not "an unqualified success" p. 22) reveals Joyce's "realization that emotional, intellectual, and spiritual exile can be embodied in the domestic relation of the husband and wife ... crucial to his analysis of the artist's alienation from the community ..." (p. 24). Ulysses reveals "the possibility that the sympathy and compassion an ideal love would promote would enable man to escape the prison of self, to merge with the community"; but it also emphasizes "the enormous difficulty of realizing this ideal love" in the modern world (p. 28). Finally, in Finnegans Wake die theme extends to the audience "because comedy and complexity demand similar and corresponding abilities in the reader to participate emotionally and intellectually in the author's vision. Joyce views the individual's capacity for laughter as yet another index of his capacity for love; both love and laughter take the individual out of himself... and foster a communion of minds between the artist and his audience" (p. 31 ). The book "becomes the model for Joyce's theme of the transcendence of the ego, to commune with humanity through the celebration of die common connections within the community" (p. 33). From this bald summary, Rice's approach may seem reductive, but he does not claim to offer the key to an interpretation of his subject. Instead, it enables him to focus his account and view die corpus steadily, die parts in a coherent relationship to the whole. The approach does lead Rice to neglect Joyce's fictional strategies. He does not analyze die limited point of view and its relation to style in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. -

Bostwick Title: William Faulkner and Aviation: The Man and the Myth Institution: Florida Atlantic University Degree: Master of Arts Year: 1981 In the years following World War I, William Faulkner implied to his family and acquaintances that he had been a pilot in the RAF. Some people even thought that he had flown combat missions in France and had been wounded. He maintained this fictitious persona throughout his life, and it was accepted by most scholars and biographers. Several of Faulkner's early works featured aviators as central charac- ters, and he treated them as romanticized, tragic heroes as he did Confederate cavalry officers. Pylon, which was written after he had actually started flying, reflects an awareness of the psychology of flying not seen in his earlier works. Faulkner's "wounded pilot" persona was only one facet of his imaginative and creative personality, but knowledge of this persona is necessary to the understanding of the man and thus . -

LIT 4329: William Faulkner Spring 2015 TR 1-2:15 PM Theresa M. Towner Course Description and Requirements William Faulkner, the Mississippi-born writer who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1950, wrote nineteen novels, well over a hundred short stories, some middling poetry, and a few fables which he illustrated himself. This course will introduce you to several of his most well-regarded novels and short stories. Throughout the semester, we will investigate recurrent patterns and themes in the fiction set largely in Faulkner’s mythical Mississippi county, Yoknapatawpha. Four assignments, each worth 25% of your course grade, will be turned in on time throughout the semester. These assignments include two exams, an oral report on and accompanying summary of a Faulkner novel not on the common reading list, and a final examination. Course requirements also include attendance and participation, and the quality of those two elements will decide cases of borderline grades. Please note that you must complete all of the required work for the course and that failure to do so will result in failure of the course. The use of electronic devices in class is not permitted. You cannot hope to pass the course if you do not attend it. I do not accept late work, schedule makeup exams, or issue grades of Incomplete. All cases of deliberate academic dishonesty will be referred to the University’s judiciary officer for adjudication and punishment. Penalties for plagiarism include failure of the assignment in question, failure of the course, and expulsion from the University. My office hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 10-11 AM and by appointment in JO 5.620. -

PERHAPS because we treasure the extant correspondence in which Jane Austen talked about her own writing, any scrap has an unwarranted staying power. She encouraged a novel-writing niece: “You are now collecting your People delightfully, getting them exactly into such a spot as is the delight of my life;—3 or 4 Families in a Country Village is the very thing to work on—& I hope you will write a great deal more, & make full use of them while they are so very favourably arranged” (9–18 September 1814). To a nephew who misplaced “two Chapters & a half” of his own novel manuscript she sent a denial that she had stolen it and an unconvincingly self-deprecating depiction of her own art, in contrast to his, as a “little bit (two Inches wide) of Ivory on which I work with so fine a Brush, as produces little effect after much labour” (16–17 December 1816). Somehow these playful descriptions—aided particularly by the illustrations of Hugh Thomson and C. E. Brock—have directed much reader response as well as much literary criticism. Too often, Austen’s world has been seen as a carefully constructed miniature, the ideal English village brought to life within the space of two or three volumes. R. W. Chapman described the traces of the world outside of Austen’s fictions discoverable in the details of the works themselves as “slight and fugitive indications”; in his editions of the novels he appended lists of “feigned places,” in some cases followed by a note that no actual place was intended.
