For this Skyfall Grand Tour, presenter Paul Murton begins his latest journey at Loch Hourn on the mainland across from Skye. Walking near Glenelg, he explores some of the best preserved iron age buildings in Scotland; the “Brochs” which are uniquely Scottish. Nearby is the village of Arnisdale, the childhood home of author Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond series of spy novels; Paul visits the house which was the inspiration for the movie Skyfall. Boarding the only turntable ferry still operating in Britain, he crosses the sea to Skye where he embarks on a nerve wracking caving expedition under the summit of Blaven, one of the island’s most famous mountains. River City Tuesday 6 October BBC One Scotland HD, 8.00 – 9.00pm facebook.com/bbcrivercity twitter.com/bbcrivercity instagram.com/bbcrivercity

This week in Shieldinch…unexpected offers throw Zinnie’s future into disarray; Eileen woos a cynical Scarlett to support the Shieldinch Festival with mixed results; and a pregnant Kelly-Marie has a health scare which casts doubt over her role at Chrome, much to Alex’s delight. Zinnie’s future in Shieldinch looks uncertain after Dr Dan offers her a placement with the Peace Doctors in Nepal. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime but Angus can’t hide his dismay at the thought of losing the love of his life. Zinnie confides in Stevie who has his own work worries having quit his job at the Tall Ship. Together, they find mutual support in each other, something which is sorely lacking at home. Meanwhile, Angus admits to Bob he’s heartbroken at the thought of losing Zinnie. Bob urges him to fight for their future together and flippantly suggests they get married. To his surprise, Angus takes the suggestion seriously. Elsewhere, all too aware that Scarlett could cause trouble for the Shieldinch Festival if she’s not on side, Eileen unleashes a charm offensive. However, despite winning Scarlett over, friction quickly resurfaces throwing the forthcoming festival into chaos - it turns to Angus to save the day. Kelly-Marie takes the lead at Chrome once again, organising a gay night with Robbie. However, a fall at the club spooks the pregnant Kelly-Marie, making her doubt her ability to run Chrome anymore. And Alex is only too thrilled to be back in charge.

Zinnie is played by Nalini Chetty, Eileen by Deirdre Davis, Scarlett by Sally Howitt, Kelly-Marie by Carmen Pieraccini, Alex by Jordan Young, Angus by Scott Fletcher, Stevie by Paul James Corrigan, Bob by Stephen Purdon and Robbie by Gary Lamont.

WEDNESDAY 7 OCTOBER TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 40 ______

The Story of Scottish Art, Ep 1/4  NEW Wednesday 7 October BBC Two Scotland, 9.00-10.00pm

The story of Scottish art and its impact on the international art world is celebrated in this new four-part series by BBC Scotland. Presented by acclaimed artist Lachlan Goudie, the series covers 5000 years, from the earliest Neolithic art to the present day – the most ambitious television series about Scottish art in recent times. Seen through the eyes of an artist, The Story of Scottish Art explores developments and innovations in art across the centuries, placing Scottish art in an international context, and at the same time telling a compelling story about Scotland’s social and political history. Lachlan Goudie explains: “Scotland’s artistic heritage is rich and complex. As a painter myself I feel a real urge to understand the motivations and the challenges that have confronted artists from Scotland throughout the centuries. How they’ve helped define their own culture whilst being informed and inspired by the most revolutionary international art movements of the day." In episode one, the story begins in the mysterious Kilmartin Glen – where rocks are marked with strange cup and ring patterns. His journey into the world of Neolithic art then takes him to Orkney, to the Ring of Brodgar, where he learns that the walls of houses were adorned with vibrant colours, and on the island of Westray he meets an ancient figurine – the Westray Wife – the oldest sculpted human figure in the British Isles. He revels in the beautifully illuminated pages of the Book of Kells, a setting of the gospel believed to be the work of the monks of Iona - and finds that it was not only the Christian Gaels who were forging sophisticated art but also the contemporary Picts. In the tiny church of Fowlis Easter, near , Lachlan finds an exuberant painting of the Crucifixion dating from the late 1400s – a rare survival, because in Scotland’s Protestant Reformation in the 1600s such images were almost all destroyed. In the art of Scotland’s Renaissance, at the castles of Stirling and Linlithgow and in the extraordinary Rosslyn Chapel, Lachlan finds art that in different ways helped to underpin the power of the Scottish crown. In the case of the art he finds in churches, almost all was destroyed in the years of the Reformation - and from those years of destruction, Lachlan celebrates the survival of the art of the portrait. Pictures of mere human beings were deemed acceptable - and they heralded a new direction for and blossoming of Scottish art.
