    ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. Paul and Danny went on to successful careers as screenwriters, authors, and producers of films, television series, video games and graphic novels including Disney's "The Rocketeer" now considered a cult classic. This then switches to another video by Dr. Kennebrew Beauregard (Alec Baldwin), who launches into a racial tirade about how African Americans take hold of the country and cause problems for white Protestant Americans. Chief Bridges (Robert John Burke) and Mr. Turrerntine (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) interview him about whether or not he should be eligible on the team. I want to know how Ron would respond if a white officer were to bully him, considering the current social and political environment surrounding African Americans, and Ron says he 'd turn the other cheek if he has to. Ron is then put on duty as the first black officer. The first task Ron does is to work inside the filing department. One Patrolman named Andy Landers (Frederick Weller) antagonizes him. Ron then goes to Bridges and asks to put him on an assignment to get out in the field, but Bridges refuses his application. Bridges later, though, changes his mind and wants to bring Ron to a Black Panther meeting to see if they intend on radicalizing themselves. Stokely Carmichael (Corey Hawkins), a popular activist, is said to speak there. Toronto, ON, September 22, 2020 — A new Ipsos poll, conducted on behalf of Indigo Books & Music Inc. (TSX:IDG), reveals the power of books and their influence on popular culture, with two-thirds of Canadians stating the best TV shows and movies are based on books. The vast majority (88%) of Canadians have read a book that is associated with a TV series or movie, and one in three (34%) have even postponed watching a TV series or movie so they could read the book it was based on first. Furthermore, three-quarters (73%) of those who have watched a TV series or movie based on a book prefer the book. Canadians enjoy a good story and appear to be interested in consuming the same story through multiple channels wherever possible. In fact, after watching a good TV series or movie, three-fifths (61%) of Canadians say they look forward to reading the book, a figure which rises to seven in ten (69%) among those aged 18-44 (vs. 52% aged 45-70). Wenn es eine Sache an Spike Lees Vietnamkriegsfilm »Da 5 Bloods« zu bemängeln gibt, dann einzig und allein, dass ihm als Produktion von Netflix der Start im Kino versagt bleibt. Das ist freilich nicht Spike Lee selbst anzulasten, sondern der derzeitigen Mutlosigkeit Hollywoods. Diese Mutlosigkeit ist es, die nun auch Lee, wie zuvor schon Martin Scorsese, in die Arme der Streaming-Anbieter treibt. Der Kinosaal und »Da 5 Bloods«, sie hätten ­einander redlich verdient. Denn Spike Lee präsentiert sich in Bestform und springt virtuos zwischen dem Vietnam der späten Sechziger und der Gegenwart und verwebt Archivaufnahmen, digitale Aufnahmetechnik, Fotografien, Super- 8-Aufnahmen und 16mm-Film miteinander. Anstatt – apropos Scorsese – die Hauptdarsteller für Rückblenden digital verjüngen zu lassen, setzt Spike Lee sie unverändert sowohl in den Gegenwartsszenen wie auch in denen der Vergangenheit ein. Das klingt zwar gewagt, geht aber gerade deshalb als ästhetische Strategie voll auf. Die Vereinigten Staaten, so wird im Film gesagt, führten seit ihrer Gründung einen Krieg gegen sich selbst, und dieser Krieg scheine bis heute anzudauern. Drei Minuten, länger braucht Spike Lee nicht, um in der rasant montierten Eröffnungssequenz von »Da 5 Bloods« ein Panorama der Vietnamkriegsära in den USA zu entwerfen.
