EDWARD HAWKE LOCKER AND THE FOUNDATION OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF NAVAL ART (c. 1795-1845) CICELY ROBINSON TWO VOLUMES VOLUME I - TEXT PhD UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART DECEMBER 2013 2 ABSTRACT The National Gallery of Naval Art was situated within the Painted Hall at Greenwich Hospital from 1824 until 1936. This collection of British naval paintings, sculptures and nautical curiosities was one of the first ‘national’ collections to be acquired and exhibited for the general public, preceding the foundation of the National Gallery by a matter of months. Installed in the wake of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the Naval Gallery, as it was more commonly known, was primarily founded to commemorate ‘the distinguished exploits of the British Navy’.1 This thesis examines how the Gallery presented a unique type of national naval history to the early nineteenth-century public, contributing to the development of contemporary commemorative culture as a result. In addition, the Naval Gallery also functioned as a forum for the exhibition of British art. This study examines how the Gallery was actively involved in the contemporary art world, liaising with the Royal Academy of Arts and the British Institution, providing patronage for contemporary artists and actively contributing toward the development of a national patriotic aesthetic. In 1936 the Naval Gallery was dismantled and the collection was given, on permanent loan, to the newly founded National Maritime Museum. As a result of this closure the Gallery ceased to be the subject of contemporary commentary and knowledge of its existence gradually declined. This thesis conducts a dedicated institutional study of the Naval Gallery in an attempt to re-establish its status as the first ‘national’ naval art collection, as a major site for the public commemoration of Nelson and as an active participant in the early nineteenth-century British art world. -

Zeehelden: wie waren ze ook alweer? Ronald Prud’homme van Reine In de zeventiende eeuw ontstond geleidelijk een groep van enkele tientallen zeeofficieren die wel de ‘gouden generatie’ van de Nederlandse zeehelden wordt genoemd. Deze zee- helden waren al in hun eigen tijd buitengewoon populair en werden onder meer geëerd met geschilderde en gegraveerde portretten, penningen en marmeren graftombes in de grote kerken van een aantal belangrijke Nederlandse steden. Ook in volgende eeuwen zouden de namen van zo’n dertig van deze zeehelden tamelijk algemeen bekend blijven, vooral doordat hun portretten telkens opnieuw in series zouden worden vastgelegd. Zeehelden waren bij uitstek volkshelden, omdat ze niet door hun afkomst, maar door hun daden een hoge functie hadden bereikt. De carrières van de beroemdste zeehelden behoren tot de meest spectaculaire van de zeventiende eeuw. Zij verwierven roem en eer, maar ook rijkdom. Alleen op zee was het mogelijk zonder noemenswaardige vooropleiding het hoogste ambt te bereiken. Daarom kon iedereen zich gemakkelijk met een zeeheld identificeren. Al lukte het natuurlijk bijna niemand om Tromp en De Ruyter na te doen, je kon het in ieder geval proberen. Met een prins van Oranje kon men zich bijvoorbeeld veel minder gemakkelijk vereenzelvigen. De zeehelden vervulden in de zeventiende eeuw een rol die een beetje vergelijkbaar is met die van muziek- en sportidolen tegenwoordig. De hoogste rang op de oorlogsvloot hadden de vlagofficieren. In volgorde van belang- rijkheid waren dit de luitenant-admiraals, vice-admiraals en schouten-bij-nacht. Tussen 1597 en 1795 werd het dagelijks bestuur van de marine aan de wal gevormd door vijf admiraliteiten, verdeeld over de zeeprovincies. -

The Battle of Sole Bay (re-enactment) Continuing his series of wargames articles following the military career of James Stuart (King James II of England), Simon MacDowall delves into the Anglo-Dutch Wars (1652-1674) when most of the action was at sea. He describes the challenges faced by a group of naval wargaming novices staging a re-creation of the Battle of Sole Bay (28 May, 1672) when James Stuart, then the Duke of York, personally commanded the English fleet. The Anglo-Dutch Wars The English have a long history of close cooperation, friendship and alliance with the Dutch. Yet it was not always so. In the mid-17th century the English and Dutch were bitter rivals for trade, colonies and control of the seas. With their stranglehold over the lucrative spice trade from modern Indonesia, the Dutch Republic was in the ascendancy in the mid- 17th century. This led to the First Anglo-Dutch war with Cromwell’s England which ended with English naval dominance in the North Sea. In the decades following the restoration of King Charles II of England. Louis XIV of France was also concerned at the growing power and wealth of the Dutch and decided to do something about it. This led to an alliance between Charles II and Louis XIV, and renewed war with the Dutch United Provinces. The Second Dutch war (1665 – 1667) was a bit of a disaster for England. It started out well enough when the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam in America was captured before hostilities had formally begun. -

Improvisation and directive. Development of naval warfare tactics in the Anglo-Dutch Wars (1652-1674) ZSOLT PALOTÁS UNIVERSITY OF SZEGED This essay aims to present the development and changes of naval warfare tactics during the Anglo-Dutch Wars in the seventeenth century (1652-1674). The main purpose of the study is source presentation and analysis. I would like to present the tactical changes in naval warfare using the contemporary Fighting Instuctions, which was edited and annotated by Julian Corbett. My goal originally was a translation and presentation of the source in Hungarian and through the source to introduce this section of modern history to Hungarian research. In this paper I am trying to explore how the issued instructions were put in to practice on the battlefield and how they influenced the development of naval warfare. The study's objective is not an in-depth analysis of the Anglo-Dutch Wars. It is to describe the most important events. During my research I came to the conclusion that the Hungarian literature does not examine the Fighting Instructions. I think it is important to write such a summary. That is why I chose that approach. We can say that the new maritime warfare which was applied in the Anglo-Dutch Wars had epochal importance. My presentation is based on English sources. The English and the Dutch researchers wrote several important monographs about the wars. For example: We have a number of primary sources about the wars and the naval warfare tactics. Corbett's work, Fighting Instructions, 1530-1816 (1905) was one my primary sources. -

CHIRURGIA OKRĘTOWA WE FLOCIE WOJENNEJ REPUBLIKI ZJEDNOCZONYCH PROWINCJI W XVII WIEKU Autorzy publikacji poświęconych epoce żagla skupiają się zazwyczaj na bitwach morskich, rozwoju taktyki, konstrukcji okrętów czy postaciach wybitnych admi- rałów i roli, jaką odegrali oni w dziejach wojen morskich. Wszystkie te, skądinąd niezwykle ważne aspekty historiogra·i działań wojennych na morzu nie wyczer- pują jednak całości tej wieloaspektowej problematyki. Jeden z najważniejszych czynników decydujących o sile i sprawności bojowej ªoty, podobnie zresztą jak i innych formacji wojskowych, stanowili i stanowią ludzie. W odniesieniu do tytułowego okresu można stwierdzić, że bez dobrze wyszkolonych, doświadczo- nych marynarzy, niemożliwe było manewrowanie przez dłuższy czas w szyku liniowym, przy zmiennych warunkach pogodowych. A tego właśnie wymagała taktyka liniowa – nowa forma walki, która zdominowała XVII-wieczne działania na morzu. Rozwój tej taktyki w połowie XVII w., co wiązało się z poprawą sku- teczności artylerii okrętowej, sprawił, że liczba o·ar wśród załóg okrętów wojen- nych gwałtownie rosła. Palącym problemem dla dowódców ówczesnej ªoty stało się więc zorganizowanie opieki medycznej nad o·arami wypadków podczas służby na morzu, a przede wszystkim nad rannymi w trakcie bitew, a także kalekami – o·arami bitew morskich. W niniejszym artykule chciałabym ukazać, jak problem ten rozwiązywano w przodującej w ówczesnej Europie XVII-wiecznej (tzw. złoty wiek holender- skiej marynarki wojennej) ªocie wojennej Republiki Zjednoczonych Prowincji (RZP), konkurującej z dynamicznie rozwijającą się ªotą angielską. W tekście zostały pominięte kwestie typowych schorzeń występujących na okrętach w epoce żagla (choroby zakaźne, szkorbut i choroby weneryczne), ponieważ stanowią one 107 MATERIAŁY odrębne zagadnienie, niezwiązane bezpośrednio z kwestiami opieki medycznej podczas bitew.
