William Butler Yeats iii ABSTRACT This dissertation dismisses the New England dominance of colonial puritan historiography to argue that an interconnected community of Atlantic puritans pursued an alternate path to their faith apart from the Massachusetts Bay experiment. While a number of Atlantic puritans emerged from the nucleus of the Ancient Church and others eventually joined those original networks, ultimately membership within the puritan Atlantic involved the embrace of a particular attitude about faith, commerce, and political involvement. Atlantic puritans were concerned with the spiritual fate of Europeans and Native Americans scattered throughout the Caribbean and along the Atlantic coastline of North America as central to both England’s political hedge against Catholic colonization and the hope for Christ’s millennial return. This eschatological perspective served as the foundation of these puritans’ Atlantic focus. Having imbued the Atlantic world with apocalyptic significance Atlantic puritans centered their commercial and political interests there as well. This community of believers became the foundation of Atlantic puritan networks that would reach from England to Amsterdam and across the Atlantic and Caribbean into Barbados, Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Long Island. English religious reform coupled with their separatist tendencies towards schism eventually brought the fellow believers to Holland seeking religious asylum, only to witness their congregation’s eventual collapse in the 1620s. The Ancient Church’s separatism had culminated in a diaspora with the first waves of migration leaving Amsterdam for the Chesapeake. Individuals including former elder of the Ancient Church Edward Bennett and his nephew Richard set up plantations in Virginia and transported fellow puritans across the Atlantic. Other congregants remained behind in Amsterdam using their connections to Virginia as the cornerstone of their burgeoning trade. Into the 1630s, the Sylvester family, Giles and his two sons Constant and Nathaniell, kept their base in the Netherlands while trading in Spain, France, Africa, Barbados, and among the Bennetts for Virginia’s tobacco. Nathaniell and Constant later left Europe for posts in Barbados and on Shelter Island, New York stretching the reach of puritan networks with roots in the Ancient Church. 1 At the same time puritans whose antecedents lay outside of the Ancient Church crossed paths with the former congregants and eventually joined their endeavors in building the puritan Atlantic. While the Bennetts were establishing a foothold in the Chesapeake, Daniel Gookin, and his two sons Daniel and John, signed a contract with the Virginia Company to import British cattle to the colony. The family also established a plantation called Marie’s Mount, south of the James River and near to the Bennetts. The Bland family, brothers John, Adam, Edward, and Theodorick stationed themselves at ports in Spain, England, Virginia, and Tangier where they also came across one-time members of the Ancient Church and entered upon their networks. Adam, Edward, and Theodorick all eventually settled among puritans in the Nansemond region of Virginia, while Theodorick married Richard Bennett’s daughter and John Bland helped the Sylvester daughters escape England for Rhode Island at the end of the English Civil War. Together, the remnant of the Ancient Church and the shared convictions of fellow Atlantic puritans coalesced in an extensive network of puritan believers during the middle of the seventeenth century. This web of relationships based upon a common understanding of puritan faith blossomed into a network of business partners, planters, merchants, politicians, and even kinsman whose impact radiated throughout the Atlantic. These puritans’ transatlantic focus shaped both their spiritual and temporal endeavors. While New England puritans had maintained relationships across the Atlantic divide these puritans, birthed from the Ancient Church, embraced the Atlantic as the nexus of their colonial pursuits. Their Atlantic perspective redrew the New Englanders’ errand into the wilderness through an imperial lens.1 Rather than an experiment of exemplary living, 1 Perry Miller “Errand into the Wilderness,” The William and Mary Quarterly 10, no. 1 (1953): 3-32. 2 Atlantic puritans initiated an effort for puritan evangelization and colonization resting on the British mercantile system and a millennial hope for Christ’s immanent return. Under the guidance of providence their Atlantic trade ventures, plantation efforts, and colonization experiments achieved a dual purpose of filling British coffers and strengthening the British religious and political position against Spanish and French Catholic colonization. At the same time, the puritans’ millennial eschatology portended widespread conversion on the eve of Christ’s apocalyptic return and through their providential perspective puritan efforts in the Atlantic, whether religious, economic, or political, encouraged the spread of their

The 1582 will of Richard Robins established a pattern of primogeniture for successive generations of his Northamptonshire family. Muster lists, wills, parish registers and a 1591 manor survey record increasing prosperity and associated expectations. Robinses were among those "better sorts" who paid taxes, provided armour, held local office, educated their children, and protcstcd against perceived government injustice. In Virginia. Richard Robins*s great grandson parlayed his assets into land, office and status. The extent of his education and financial resources was probably limited, but good health, timing.

    SAMUEL GORTON Recently there has been on the internet an influence argument having to do with whether in the 17th Century Samuell Gorton influenced the development of Quakerism, or whether instead Quakerism influenced the development of Gortonism. This argument has evidently been mounted by proud descendants of Gorton and facilitated by genealogists. To track this, you can consider the following three articles: PERUSE A 1934 STUDY PERUSE A 1979 STUDY PERUSE A 1983 STUDY I do not myself find anything which would indicate that Samuell Gorton had any influence whatever over the development of Quakerism. Indeed, the impression which I bring away from this reading is that Mr. Gorton of Warwick, Rhode Island was your usual sort of fundie panjandrum preacherman (a phenomenon with which we of the 21st Century are even now all too familiar), establishing his own little church with his own little flock as the venue within which he might play the role of Supreme Pontiff, as a sort of personality cult: “I listen to the Inward Christ, while you listen to me.” This man was a Reverend Jim Jones character if he was anything — “You need to drink this grape Kool-Aid.” It would amaze me to discover that any Quakers of the 17th Century were interested in reducing themselves to being merely such a man’s camp followers. It would seem to me that it is one of the foundation stones of Quakerism, that we do not embrace such religious leadership — that this is a grape Kool- Aid which we always decline. (Of course, I also consider that it was rather wrongheaded for the Puritans to come down into Rhode Island and arrest him and keep him in leg shackles in Charlestown, and come within a skosh of hanging him.

  • Colonial Failure in the Anglo-North Atlantic World, 1570-1640 (2015)
    FINDLEY JR, JAMES WALTER, Ph.D. “Went to Build Castles in the Aire:” Colonial Failure in the Anglo-North Atlantic World, 1570-1640 (2015). Directed by Dr. Phyllis Whitman Hunter. 266pp. This study examines the early phases of Anglo-North American colonization from 1570 to 1640 by employing the lenses of imagination and failure. I argue that English colonial projectors envisioned a North America that existed primarily in their minds – a place filled with marketable and profitable commodities waiting to be extracted. I historicize the imagined profitability of commodities like fish and sassafras, and use the extreme example of the unicorn to highlight and contextualize the unlimited potential that America held in the minds of early-modern projectors. My research on colonial failure encompasses the failure of not just physical colonies, but also the failure to pursue profitable commodities, and the failure to develop successful theories of colonization. After roughly seventy years of experience in America, Anglo projectors reevaluated their modus operandi by studying and drawing lessons from past colonial failure.     Portsmouth Historical Society Newsletter April 2020 As the State of RI slowly reopens, we too are preparing to open our museum buildings to visitors, following social distancing protocols. Our Annual Meeting will be held on Monday evening June 22, 2020, featuring a lecture by Jim Garman about the businesses that were operating in Portsmouth 100 years ago. This topic complements our 2020 seasonal display titled “A Tumultuous Decade 100 years ago, the 1920’s”. Exhibits will focus on suffrage, prohibition, Mt Hope Bridge, jazz music and radio with emphasis on a well known Portsmouth songwriter, Island Park diving horse and dance marathons, Portsmouth politics and prejudice- KKK activity and the State House bombing, and soldiers returning from WWI. The museum will reopen Sunday June 28, 2020 from 2 PM to 5 PM. These are hopeful, but tentative, dates due to the circumstances. We will confirm and provide more visiting details as the dates get closer.
