That is the title of our feature story. It is about the secret that Boiseans have been trying to keep for years – that is, that Boise really is one of the best plac- es to live. And it is one of those secrets that – for years – we have tried to keep under our hats. We’ve been selfish, really. We didn’t want to share it because then, everybody would know. And everybody would want to live here. But try as we might, word has gotten out. Boise started appearing on the “Best of” lists a few years ago. “Shh,” we said, thinking that we could keep it quiet. But then one or two lists became five or six, and pretty soon a dozen. Today, Boise sits on so many “Best of” lists that to try to keep a lid on it would be preposterous. Also, we’re not so selfish, really. And we are very proud of our fair city! So, come on, Best Of lists, and keep on coming. We are proud that everyone wants to come to Boise – to raise a family? Of course. To hike, bike, kayak and fish? Why not? To retire? You bet. But in between, don’t forget to take in one-of-a-kind sights like the Old Idaho State Penitentiary that some say is haunted; the incredible outdoor Shakespeare Festival; or Freak Alley. Come and see world-class music during our Treefort Music Fest, the Gene Harris Jazz Festival or at Alive After Five. Check out our Attractions, Recreation and Sports, Arts and Culture, and Entertainment & Events sections to map out your itinerary. Peruse our in-depth Dining Decisions section and find out where you can taste delicacies from the world over – or experience farm-to-table local dishes. If you plan to say a while – and we think you might – use our sections on Health and Wellness, Real Estate and Education to bone up on what we have to offer you and your loved ones. And if you like shopping and want to know how to get from here to there, we’ve got you covered with our Shopping and Transportation sections. All that, plus a little bit of history about this place, local statistics and information about our state you’ll find in Boise City of Trees, Facts at a Glance and Incredible Idaho. What have we left out? That is for you to find out! And we hope you discover your own Boise “Best of” list. Jeanne Huff 4 WELCOME TO BOISE 2017 Letter from the Mayor Welcome to the City of Trees! If this is your first visit, or even if you haven’t been here for a while, prepare to be dazzled. New- comers quickly realize what Boise residents have always known: Our city is the perfect blend of urban amenities, recreational opportunities, and natural beauty. We call it “livability,” and our goal is to make Boise the most livable city in the country. Our geographic isolation is also our great strength; from the time of its founding more than 150 years ago, Boise has been a place that thrives on individual initiative and collective idealism. Today that can-do attitude is evident in our thriving entre- preneurial climate, our vibrant cultural offerings, and the spirit of innovation that permeates everything we do. It’s no wonder that national organizations and publications consistently rate Boise as among the top cities in which to own a business, raise a family, retire, and just enjoy life. We’re proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish, and we’re certain you’ll enjoy your visit and help us spread the Boise story far and wide. Best wishes, David H. Bieter Mayor WELCOME TO BOISE 2017 5 Boise City of Trees estled in a valley surrounded by foothills, Boise has the wide-open feel of the Wild West. It is the state capital and Idaho’s largest city. Boise is a big city with a small-town heart. Many dream about such a place. It’s got affordable housing, whether you live in a downtown high-rise, in a bungalow or a stately Victorian in the historic North End, in a mid-century ranch house on The Bench or in the outlying bedroom communi- ties. NThere’s little to no traffic; rush hours are over in minutes. But the great outdoors may be its greatest asset.

However long and to what extent the damage to the music industry would be, one thing was certain. At some point there would need to be a return to (a possible “new”) normal. The Amplify Music virtual conference was one of the first gatherings of mu- sic industry stakeholders to immediately address issues around the indus- try’s resilience in this pandemic and what it might look like. Leaders from throughout the world participated in the twenty-five consecutive hour con- vening. This paper summarizes many of the perspectives, observations, and ideas presented in regard to the future of the United States music in- dustry post-pandemic. Keywords: coronavirus, COVID-19, Amplify Music, National Inde- pendent Venue Association, NIVA, livestreaming, resilience Introduction On the afternoon of March 2, 2020, Kate Becker, Creative Economy Strategist for King County, Washington, concluded her presentation at the closing session of a conference presented by the Responsible Hos- pitality Institute (RHI), an organization focused on nightlife in cities and “helping cities worldwide harness the power of the social economy.”1 The conference, held in the heart of downtown Seattle and mere blocks away from Ms.

“Something About the Way You Look Tonight” Popular Music Festivals as Rites of Passage in the Contemporary United States Geneva Jackson Advised by Judith Schachter Carnegie Mellon University Dietrich College Honors Fellowship Program Spring 2016 Acknowledgements This project was made possible by the love and support of many people, to whom I will be forever indebted. First, I would like to thank the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, for the creation of the Honors Fellowship Program, through which I received additional support to begin work on my thesis over the summer of 2015. I am thankful for the opportunity to explore my nonacademic interests in an academic setting. Weekly meetings with the other fellows, Eleanor Haglund, Kaylyn Kim, Kaytie Nielsen, Sayre Olson, Lucy Pei, Chloe Thompson, and Laurnie Wilson, as well as our mentors Dr. Joseph Devine, Dr. Jennifer Keating-Miller, and Dr. Brian Junker, were invaluable in the formation of my topic focus. Thank you for the laughter and advice. I’d also like to express endless gratitude to my thesis advisor, Dr. Judith Schachter, for her limitless encouragement, critical eye, and keen ability to parse out exactly I was trying to say when my phrasing became cumbersome. I would like also to acknowledge Dr. Scott Sandage for agreeing to consult with me over the summer and to thank him for telling the freshman-engineering-major version of me to consider a history degree. Special thanks must be given to my music festival partners, Catherine Kildunne, Emily Clark, Ian Einhorn, Sam Ho, and Anthony Comport, without whom field research would have been a woefully solitary task.

  • Idaho Native Keith Allred Answers a Resounding "Yes" to That Question, and Now Has a National Platform to Try and Make That Happen
#2407 - 04/26/2019 Keith Allred Can we all just get along better? Idaho native Keith Allred answers a resounding "yes" to that question, and now has a national platform to try and make that happen. In this Dialogue episode, Allred, the new executive director of the National Institute for Civil Discourse (NICD), talks with host Marcia Franklin about his vision. Allred, the Democratic nominee for the Idaho governorship in 2010, is a mediator who founded The Common Interest, a multi-party citizens' group that studied Idaho legislative issues and came to a consensus on positions. He is taking that model to a national level with a new initiative at NICD called "CommonSense American." Although political rancor is high right now, Allred just sees that as an opportunity for positive change. "I have never been more optimistic than I am today," he tells Franklin. Mr. Allred graduated from Twin Falls High School, and received an undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from UCLA. #2406 - 01/11/2019 Columnist Nicholas Kristof Host Marcia Franklin talks with Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. Kristof was in Boise in October, 2018 to address the fall conference of the Idaho Women’s Charitable Foundation. The two discuss Kristof's views on current social issues in America. His next book will look at those concerns, focusing on his hometown of Yamhill, Oregon. Kristof talks about programs he believes would help ameliorate the problems, and they also discuss the role of private philanthropy. Franklin also asks Kristof about international topics, as he spends much of his time reporting from foreign countries, and he shares his thoughts on which of his stories he’s most proud.
