This city has got what you’re looking for, whether you are here for a weekend getaway, at a business convention, or you’re moving in. You’ll see friendly faces wherever you go: downtown, at the coffee shops, at the malls, on the streets, standing in line at the movies or stopping in at the grocery store. That’s because we like it here. And we want to share our city with you. This place that keeps getting bigger – but still has a small-town heart – also has just about everything you’d ever want in a city: sports including football, basketball, baseball and hockey; cultural activities Photo by Pete Grady including art galleries, ballet, live theater, an orchestra and the opera; attractions such as a zoo, an aquarium and museums of all kinds; shopping opportu- nities from funky thrift stores to a destination shopping center that features live music, an ice-skating rink and dancing foun- tains; and dozens of parks, ponds and streams, as well as a river with a kayak park. This year, we have also included a comprehensive Dining Decisions dining guide, listing local eateries by cuisine, so you can find your way to whatever you’re hungry for. Also, check out our cover story, “Bike-friendly Boise.” And feel free to take a bicycle tour around town – you can rent Boise GreenBikes by the hour. Boise. We like it here. And, we know you will like it, too! Jeanne Huff From the editor From 4 Welcome to Boise From the mayor From Welcome to Boise! As you’re about to discover, this city is a remarkable place. Newcomers and visitors are always impressed by Boise’s vibrant downtown, welcoming neighborhoods, abundant recreational opportunities, and friendly people. Stay a little longer, and you’ll get a sense of the spirit of in- novation and independent spirit that’s deeply imbedded in our 150-year history. Located, as we are, so far from other major urban centers, Boiseans have always looked to ourselves to roll up our sleeves and make things happen – to find the new ideas that will make our community stronger. That’s why so many entrepreneurs and business- es—including some of the most cutting-edge technology firms in the country – call Boise home. It’s no wonder that our city draws attention from coast to coast. Our mission is to make Boise the most livable city in the country, and with the help of our dynamic and imaginative citizens, we’re making it happen. Enjoy! Sincerely, David H. There’s little to no traffic; rush hours are over in minutes. But the great outdoors may be its greatest as- Nset. Skiing is less than an hour’s drive and just 16.5 miles away.
