Gaining such competencies and completing this research often pushed me well beyond my comfort zone and involved sacrifice by my family. Yet this project has provided me with some of the most enriching experiences and lessons of my life. My dissertation committee has provided invaluable feedback and guidance. Studying translation with my advisor, Gustavo Pellón, and learning from his own methods as a literary translator has informed my conception of this entire dissertation and the bilingual works I study. His advice for tackling a years-long project and his unwavering belief in my abilities were essential to finishing this project and fine-tuning my thinking. Committee member Allison Bigelow has been an enthusiastic supporter of my research from the moment she arrived to the University of Virginia. She was instrumental in the continuation of my Maya studies and helped facilitate some connections in Yucatan from her own studies there. Her detailed feedback and linguistic and cultural knowledge greatly strengthened this project. Ricardo Padrón’s enthusiasm for my research at presentations throughout my graduate studies have greatly encouraged me as an academic, and his own articulate presentation of his work has been an important model for me. Eve Danziger’s anthropology course on the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization has been essential for my understanding of contemporary Mayan languages and peoples. Her support, brainstorming on how to frame the overall project, and invitations to anthropology department events related to Mayan cultures have helped me arrive to this point. Finally, from my first forays into Maya language study at the Open School of Ethnography and Anthropology (OSEA) in Pisté, Yucatan, Quetzil Castañeda has been an essential guide for how to critically interrogate Salinas 4 the countless studies written about the Maya. His invaluable feedback forced me to question my own assumptions and strengthen my critical voice. I am indebted to multiple Maya language instructors, through whom my bilingual approach to Maya-language literature would not be possible. My first instructor, Edy Dzidz, helped me learn more in one summer than I ever thought possible at OSEA in 2013. The University of North Carolina-Duke Consortium’s Yucatec Maya Summer Institute helped me strengthen that foundation and gain advanced proficiencies in 2015. Instructors Fidencio Briceño Chel, Felipe Castillo Tzec, and Graham Armstrong all contributed invaluably to my ability to read contemporary literature, as did our classroom assistants Leidy Cen, María Jesús Dzul Dzib, and others. Beyond language acquisition, each of these instructors’ insights into the ties between culture and language has been a vital foundation for my work. Studying through two programs immersed me in both community and intellectual perceptions surrounding Maya language and culture. The opportunity to study in a community of anthropologists at OSEA also provided me with a background in that field. Fellowships sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, and the University of Virginia supported my research and language study in Yucatan. I feel privileged to have been able to speak with multiple Maya-language writers about their work. I greatly admire each of their work for different reasons. My beginnings as a critic of Maya-language literature began with Wildernain Villegas’ poetry. Edy Dzidz, at the time Villegas’ student at the Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo (UIMQroo), first introduced me to the poet. Villegas met with me on more than one occasion, and has always made time to respond to my questions. Felipe Castillo Tzec and Ismael May May boosted my confidence speaking Maya and contributed to my understanding of current realities that Maya Salinas 5 speakers and authors face. I have never been so nervous to present as when I discussed Ana Patricia Martínez Huchim’s work in her presence at the Carolina Conference on Romance Languages in 2016. Since our meeting, her discussion of literary creation and her illuminating cultural insight has been invaluable for this project. Finally, Sol Ceh Moo’s perspectives on her work and Maya-language literature in general greatly enriched my analyses. Writers’ gifts of copies of their work, time, and knowledge have helped make this project what it is. There are a great many individuals in Yucatan who also added to my knowledge of Maya language and more importantly, offered their unconditional friendship. The community of Pisté deserves special mention for the warm welcome they gave me as a newcomer and returning visitor to their town. Doña Luisa Marrufo adopted me as another daughter and welcomes me into her home whenever I am in Pisté. I will always treasure our conversations, her delicious cooking, and her tireless efforts to care for her family. The laughter, love, and unmeasured generosity I experienced in the larger Marrufo family with Doña Luisa’s eight children (Memo, Miguel, Victoria, Jenny, Rey, Ariel, Javier, and Carlos) and their families cannot be described in words. The many lessons I learned from her children about Maya will never be forgotten. I also owe a great debt to Don Tanis, who patiently listened as I stumbled my way through communicative efforts even from my earliest days ‘speaking’ Maya. His exceptional knowledge of Maya language and the natural world, along with his gentle nature, are among my fondest memories in Yucatan. A visit to his beehives provided a special memory. Finally, the Cetz, Burgos, and Cat families have also extended lasting friendship and generosity. In the US, many colleagues have contributed to my growth as a scholar and to this dissertation. I owe a great scholarly debt to Paul Worley, as I draw frequently from his groundbreaking work in studying a contemporary Yucatec Maya corpus in a bilingual manner. Salinas 6 Upon meeting at a conference in North Carolina, he has consistently supported my academic career and provided orientation in the field of Maya literature. My classmates from the UNC- Duke program are a scholarly community, and especially Ana Ugarte has been an important colleague and friend.     Glyph Dwellers Report 57 September 2017 A New Teotiwa Lord of the South: K’ahk’ Uti’ Chan Yopat (578-628 C.E.) and the Renaissance of Copan Péter Bíró Independent Scholar Classic Maya inscriptions recorded political discourse commissioned by title-holding elite, typically rulers of a given city. The subject of the inscriptions was manifold, but most of them described various period- ending ceremonies connected to the passage of time. Within this general framework, statements contained information about the most culturally significant life-events of their commissioners. This information was organized according to discursive norms involving the application of literary devices such as parallel structures, difrasismos, ellipsis, etc. Each center had its own variations and preferences in applying such norms, which changed during the six centuries of Classic Maya civilization. Epigraphers have thus far rarely investigated Classic Maya political discourse in general and its regional-, site-, and period-specific features in particular. It is possible to posit very general variations, for example the presence or absence of secondary elite inscriptions, which makes the Western Maya region different from other areas of the Maya Lowlands (Bíró 2011). There are many other discursive differences not yet thoroughly investigated. It is still debated whether these regional (and according to some) temporal discursive differences related to social phenomena or whether they strictly express literary variation (see Zender 2004). The resolution of this question has several implications for historical solutions such as the collapse of Classic Maya civilization or the hypothesis of status rivalry, war, and the role of the secondary elite. There are indications of ruler-specific textual strategies when inscriptions are relatively uniform; that is, they contain the same information, and their organization is similar.

Collins, B.S., M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Examination Committee: Approved by Professor Donald Winford, Advisor Professor Scott Schwenter Advisor Professor Amy Zaharlick Department of Linguistics Copyright by Wesley Miller Collins 2005 ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I look at selected Maya-Mam anthropological and linguistic data and suggest that they provide evidence that there exist overlapping cultural and grammatical themes that are salient to Mam speakers. The data used in this study were gathered largely via ethnographic methods based on participant observation over my twenty-five year relationship with the Mam people of Comitancillo, a town of 60,000 in Guatemala’s Western Highlands. For twelve of those years, my family and I lived among the Mam, participating with them in the cultural milieu of daily life. In order to help shed light on the general relationship between language and culture, I discuss the key Mayan cultural value of centeredness and I show how this value is a pervasive organizing principle in Mayan thought, cosmology, and daily living, a value called upon by the Mam in their daily lives to regulate and explain behavior. Indeed, I suggest that centeredness is a cultural theme, a recurring cultural value which supersedes social differences, and which is defined for cultural groups as a whole (England, 1978). I show how the Mam understanding of issues as disparate as homestead construction, the town central plaza, historical Mayan religious practice, Christian conversion, health concerns, the importance of the numbers two and four, the notions of agreement and forgiveness, child discipline, and moral stance are all instantiations of this basic underlying principle.

El objetivo del proyecto es investigar la expansión y desintegración de los poderes hegemónicos en el área maya, con un enfoque en la zona central de las Tierras Bajas y específicamente en la estrecha relación de Uxul con los gobernantes de la poderosa dinastía Kaan de Calakmul. Brandes The first decade of the 21st century has seen a transformation in national and regional Mexican politics and society. In the state of Yucatán, this transformation has taken the shape of a newfound interest in indigenous Maya culture coupled with increasing involvement by the state in public health efforts. Suicide, which in Yucatán more than doubles the national average, has captured the attention of local newspaper media, public health authorities, and the general public; it has become a symbol of indigenous Maya culture due to an often cited association with Ixtab, an ancient Maya ―suicide goddess‖. My thesis investigates suicide as a socially produced cultural artifact. It is a study of how suicide is understood by many social actors and institutions and of how upon a close examination, suicide can be seen as a trope that illuminates the complexity of class, ethnicity, and inequality in Yucatán. In particular, my dissertation –based on extensive ethnographic and archival research in Valladolid and Mérida, Yucatán, México— is a study of both suicide and suicide prevention efforts.

Mayan Calendar Mayan calendars are a set of 3 interlocking calendars; Tzolkin, Haab, Long Count calendar. When Mayans referred to a date in an inscription, they used all three calendars to write the date. Every 52 years the Tzolkin and Haab would sync together, this was called a calendar round. The Tzolkin or sacred calendar was a 260 day period divided into 20 equal peri- ods. Each day was represented by a day and a number. The numbers ran from 1 to 13 and there were 20 day names. When the cycle of 1 to 13 was complete it would start again, the 20 day names would continue. It took 260 days to re- turn back to number 1 and day 1. The Haab or Solar calendar has 365 days, so therefore can be most closely linked to the Georgian calendar we use today. However, the Mayans divided the year up into 18 months of 20 days each and then 5 isolated days that were seen to be unlucky, this time was known as the Wayeb.

In contrast, it has hardly been recognized that a similar ceremonial use of stones survived among the Highland Maya of Guatemala throughout the Postclassic and Colonial period into modern times. According to colonial sources the “souls” of deceased rulers were conserved in portable stones and guarded by high-ranking officials. Royal burial ceremonies included the erection of stone images representing the departed rulers as part of a sacred geography. Even among the modern Maya there is ritual featuring the “sowing” of a stone in a natural location which becomes linked to the life-force of a person. In a similar way different stone features —both natural and artificial— continue to play a role in various ceremonies related to the economic well-being or the demarcation of territories between competing communities.

Brandes The first decade of the 21st century has seen a transformation in national and regional Mexican politics and society. In the state of Yucatán, this transformation has taken the shape of a newfound interest in indigenous Maya culture coupled with increasing involvement by the state in public health efforts. Suicide, which in Yucatán more than doubles the national average, has captured the attention of local newspaper media, public health authorities, and the general public; it has become a symbol of indigenous Maya culture due to an often cited association with Ixtab, an ancient Maya ―suicide goddess‖. My thesis investigates suicide as a socially produced cultural artifact.
