Helping hand Hamas to leave name off ballots

amas said yesterday it will not submit candi- Hdates in its own name for upcoming Palestinian municipal elections, while its rival Fatah registered candidates in the Ha- mas-run Gaza Strip. “Hamas will not participate in the elections under the name of Hamas or with candidates known to be Hamas,” party spokesman Fawzy Barhoum told AFP. Instead the movement “will present academic lists, profes- sionals, experts, people recog- nised for their role in the ad- ministration or for international relations.” The Islamist movement is to decide which candidates to back after the electoral commis- sion announces the full list next month. Earlier yesterday, Fatah’s Gaza spokesman Fayez Abu Eita told a news conference the party had “submitted lists of candidates for all municipalities in the Gaza Strip to the electoral commis- sion” on the last day of registra- tion. The elections are due to take place in October. Fatah and Hamas have not contested an election since the 2006 parliamentary polls, which Hamas won — sparking a con- fl ict that led to a near-civil war in Gaza the following year. The two movements now each control part of the occupied Pal- estinian territories, with Hamas in charge in Gaza and Fatah in the West Bank. The last Palestinian munici- pal elections took place in 2012, though Hamas boycotted them. This year, both parties pledged to respect the results of the polls, the electoral commission has Workers unload boxes of aid from Saudi Arabia, designated for the victims of the flood in Sudan, at Khartoum airport. In both camps, experts agree, the forthcoming vote is seen as a test which could then lead to parliamentary and presidential elections. Relations, however, have been strained by the arrest of a number of Hamas fi gures in the West Bank. “This is the beginning,” Faisal Abu Shahla, a member of the Egypt’s wheat graft scandal Fatah leadership in Gaza, said at the news conference. Two turtles, two eagles, two por- cupines, a pelican, an emu and a deer arrived late on Wednesday near Am- man after travelling from Gaza via Israel, said Amir Khalil, a vet from the charity organising the transfer. Animal welfare charity Four Paws on Wednesday said it evacuated 15 animals — including Gaza’s last tiger Laziz — out of the Khan Yunis zoo, as they headed for a new life outside the Israeli-blockaded territory. The tiger was put on a plane and fl own to South Africa where it ar- rived yesterday, while fi ve monkeys remained in Israel, Khalil said. Gulf Times Friday, August 26, 2016 17 THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH This is Makkah, the Secure City onourable Makkah, the Secure City; Allah has distinguished it from among all places and made it Hsacred from the day He created the heavens and the earth. Allah commanded Prophet Ibraaheem, may Allah exalt his mention, to build the fi rst House on earth for Allah to be worshipped in at this spot and sent down the Black Stone from Paradise as a manifest sign of the sanctity of His Sacred House. In Makkah springs the fi nest water on the surface of the earth, the water of Zamzam, which is food that suffi ces the hungry and a cure for the sick. It is the water with which the chest and heart of the chosen Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was cleansed in order to prepare him for his mission. Allah has made Makkah eternally sacred and secure; He says (what means): “Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away (i.e. killed and taken captive) all around them?” [Qur’an 29:67] Allah has sent down blessings and mercy upon Makkah, the likes of which have not been bestowed upon any other place or person on earth. In order to make the matter clear, lest people confuse what is virtuous with what is not and what is sacred with what is not, the Lord sent down the angel Jibreel (Gabriel), may Allah exalt his mention, to point out the boundaries of the Sacred City, and Prophet Ibraaheem, may Allah exalt his mention, placed signs marking its boundaries. Furthermore, Allah commanded His messenger, Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, to rebuild the structure of the House. This, indeed, is a clear sign and evidence manifesting the sanctity and holiness of this Secure City. It was with the command of Allah that Prophet Ibraaheem, may Allah exalt his mention, proclaimed to the people the Hajj (pilgrimage) and Allah took it upon Himself to convey the sound of the call all around An aerial view of the Grand Mosque in the holy city of Makkah. the world. Thereafter, the caravan of the honourable prophets, the righteous and those who followed them began to respond and come forth to the Sacred City. Prophet Moosaa (Moses), may Allah exalt his mention, the one who was honoured by the miracle of Allah speaking to him, came forth, as came Prophet A duty mankind owes to Allah Yoonus (Jonah), may Allah exalt his mention, the one who was swallowed by the whale, as well as a multitude of other prophets. Supermarket pulled up for storing food items in workers’ housing

Legal action has been taken against a supermarket in Al Sadd for violating regulations by storing food items in a workers’ housing unit, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment said yesterday. The violation was detected by inspectors from the health inspection section in the Municipal Control Department at Doha Municipality. A team of inspectors conducted a search at the workers’ accommodation following a complaint that the place was being used to store food products in unhygienic conditions. The place lacked basic hygiene requirements as well as adequate ventilation. Food items beyond their expiry date were also found at the store and seized accordingly. A violation report was issued for flouting Law No 8 of 1990 on the Regulation of Human Food Control. Korean artistes’ concert at Katara
