That’s where the fruit is.” –Mark Twain Ganesh Chaturthi Sept 8th Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day Hindu festival taking place in India and ob- served around the world this week. The occasion, also known as Vina- yaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi, honors the arrival on earth of Lord Temple website Ganesha, to bring wisdom and remove obstacles from the paths of the http://htsnm.org/ lives of true believers. 1 Festivals in Shrawan Hindu month July 23 to Aug 22 (varies) Shravan is considered to be a holy month in the Hindu calendar due to the many festivals that are celebrated during this time. Krishna Janmashtami -marks the birth of Lord Sri Krishna, on the 8th day after the full moon Raksha Bandhan - signifies and celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It is celebrated on Shraavana Poornima (Full Moon). Bond of Protection Avani Avittam -In southern and central parts of India in- cluding Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Odisha, Shraavana Poornima day is when the Brahmin community performs the rituals of Avani Avittam or Upakarma. @ our temple Shrawan Somvaar celebrated Mondays from 7- 8:30 pm at the temple. Devotees are requested to bring Puja thali to do Shiva Namavali, Shiva Mahiman Stotram followed by bhajan and aarati. Shrawan is observed for worshiping Lord Shiva. During this month, devotees observe fast and give up non- vegetarian food. All the Mondays falling in the Shrawan month are considered to be highly auspicious for ob- serving fast and are known as Shrawan Somvaar. 2 President’s message Greetings, Hope this August finds you in the best of health and spirits. With the advent of our children going back to school, we have some projects restarting for the fall. We have new members that have joined our working groups. I would like to welcome Yagnesh Pathak to our Board, also, Dr. Bala Kulkarni as patron member. Two new advisors joined to help the board implement its various activities, they are Ashok and Pritha Ghosh— welcome. Committees that are currently active include the temple planning committee, Ahimsa walkathon committee, Parent/Adult program, there are also plans under- way to provide food every Sunday at our temple (Bhandara), please keep a look out for the dates and volunteer to cook/help prepare food on Sundays. The visa papers have been submitted for the priest and now it is a waiting period about 2 months for approval from the visa authorities. The cost of maintaining a poojari will increase our monthly operating costs. If our members could contrib- ute at least $50 per month we will be in very good shape. We have many upcoming celebrations scheduled in our temple, please come and join in the ceremonies and fellowship. I encourage everyone to participate in the various activities and progress of our temple. Ultimately, we are a volunteer member-run program and our success depends on the individuals willing to stand up and be leaders.
