rs:2205-1962 Indian Standard SPECIFICATION FOR TUBE INFLATED FOOTBALL BLADDER

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 12 November 1962, after the draft finalized by the Sports Goods Sectional Committee had been approved by the Engineering Division Council. 0.2 This standard is one of a series of Indian Standards for sports goods prepared on the recommendation of the Sports Goods Export Promotion Council of the . 0.3 It is recognized that there is a great demand for valve type bladders in the foreign markets. The possibility of formulating an Indian Standard for this type of football bladders is being examined. 0.4 Wherever a reference to any Indian Standard appears in this specification, it shall be taken as a reference to the latest version of the standard. 0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960 Rules for Rounding Off Numerical Values ( Revised ). The number of significant places retained in the rounded off valu$ should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 0.6 This standard is intended chiefly to cover the technical provisions relating to football bladders, and it does not include all the necessary provisions of a contract.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard covers the requirements of tube infla’ted football bladders of Sizes A and B which are equivalent to Sizes 4 and 5 commonly known in the trade.

3

2. MATERIAL AND WORKMANSHIP

2.1 The bladders shall be made from well-calendered rubber sheets of suitable quality and uniform thickness. The rubber sheets shall be free from harmful defects like pits, wrinkles, etc. 2.1.1 Characteristics of good quality rubber sheets are as follows: a) Before ageing: Tensile strength, Min 175 kg/cm2 Elongation at break, Min 600 percent b) After ageing for seven days at 70°C: Tensile strength, Min 140 kg/cm* Elongation at break, Min 550 percent 2.2 The nozzles shall be properly joined to the bladders and the joint, when tested in accordance with 4.4, shall withstand a load of 20 kg without failure.

3. WEIGHT

3.1 The weight of bladders shall be such that a football (see*IS :417-1953 Specification for Footballs, Volley-Balls, Basket Balls and Water Polo Balls ) with a fully inflated bladder shall weigh between 397 and 450 grams. 4. TESTS

4.1 Leakage Test - Each and every bladder, manufactured in accordance with this specification, shall be tested for leakage of air. 4.2 Four-Hour IntIotioo Test - The selected bladders (see Table I ), when inflated to a diameter between 150 and 175 mm and kept for 4 hours, shall not show any excessive deflation. For the number of samples to be tested and permissible defectives, see Appendix A. 4.3 Prolouged Inflation Test - From the lots of bladders which satisfy the requirements of 4.2, the selected bladders ( see Table I ), when kept inflated for 20 hours, shall not show any undue deformation. For the number of samples to be tested and permissible defectives, see Appendix A. 4.4 Tensile Test for Nozzles - The method of conducting tensile test for nozzles on bladders usually employed, shall be as follows: The broader side of the hladder is folded and held in the jig of a tensile testing machine 01‘ \uir‘ible capacity. Load is applied till *Second wvisimt in IWB.

the joint fails. The joint shall withstand a load of20 kg without failure. 5. MARKING

5.1 Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, the football bladders shall be marked with their size, manufacturer’s name, his initials or trade-mark and the year of manufacture. 5.1.1 The bladders may also be marked with the ISI Certification Mark. NOTE -The use of [he ISI Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of’ [be Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The ISI Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that [hey have been produced to comply with the requirement, of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is deviled and supervised by IS1 and o crated by the producer. ISI marked checked by IS f for conformity to that standard as a condttlons under which a licencc for the use of [he ISI Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obt&& from the Indian Standards Institution. 6. PACKING

6.1 The bladders shall be packed in a weatherproof manner in accordance with the best trade practice.

APPENDIX A

( Clauses 4.2 and 4.3 )

SAMPLING SCHEME AND CONFORMITY CRITERIA FOR INFLATION TESTS ON FOOTBALL BLADDERS

A-l. LOT A-l.1 In any consignment, all the football bladders of the same type and size and manufactured from the same material under essentially similar conditions of manufacture shall be grouped together,to constitute a lot. A-1.1.1 For ascertaining the conformity of any lot to the requirements of 4.2 and 4.3, the tests shall be conducted for each lot separately. The number of football bladders to be selected for this purpose shall be as gi*/en in Table I. A-l.2 The football bladders shall be- selected at random. To ensure randomness of selection, a certain number of boxes (not- less than 10 percent of the boxes in the consignment ) shall be selected at first. From each of the boxes so selected an approximately’equal number of

A-2. NUMBER OF TESTS AND CONFORMITY CRITERIA

A-2.1 All the. football bladders selected according to A-l.2 shall be subjected to the inflation test ( see 4.2 ) for 4 hours. Any football bladder showing excessive deflation at the end of 4 hours shall be considered as a defective. A-2.1.1 If the number of defective bladders found is less than or equal to the corresponding permissible number of defecti\-es given in co1 3 of Table I, the lot shall be declared as conforming to the require- ments of the 4-hour inflation test. Only such lots shall be examined further for the prolonged inflation test.

A-2.2 For each of those lots which are found satisfactory according to A-2.1.1, a number of football bladders equivalent to the sample size indicated in co1 4 of Table I shall be kept inflated for 20 hours. Any bladder showing undue deformation at the end of the test shall be considered as a defective.

A-2.2.1 If the number of defective bladders found after the prolonged inflation test is less than or equal to the corresponding permissible number of defectives given in co1 5 of Table 1, the lot shall be declared as conforming to the requirements of the specification.
