He studied International Law under the guidance of Giuseppe Sperduti with whom he also had his first experiences in the field of human rights. He represented the Italian Government at the Commission on Human Rights, at the General Assembly at the United Nations (UN) and at the Geneva Diplomatic Conference on the Humanitarian Law of Armed Conflicts in the 1970’s. .He was member and chairman of the Council of Europe Steering Committee for Human Rights (CDDH) (1984-‘88) and he was president of the Council of Europe`s “European Commitee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment” (CPT) (1989-'93). .He became a full Professor in 1972 and taught International Law at University of Pisa (1972-‘75), at the University of Florence and at the European University Institute (1987- ‘93). In 2001 he was appointed to the "Blaise Pascal Chair", a position he held for one year. He also held courses and conferences in European and American University (Collège de France, Harvard University School of Law, Cambridge USA, London School of Economics etc.). .Cassese was an expert in international criminal law and worked in several international courts. He served as judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) (1993-2000), chairman for the International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur (2004-2005), and was subsequently nominated by the Secretary-General of the UN Independent Expert for the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) in 2006. More recently, since 2009, he has served as judge and President of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL)..He was co-founder and co-editor of the European Journal of International Law and founder and editor-in-chief of the Journal of International Criminal Justice. Antonio Cassese Documents from 1953 to 2014 The material comprising this collection reflects Antonio Cassese`s professional career as a researcher, professor of international law, legal expert on human rights and judge in important international courts of law. The material collected throughout his career is comprised of various types of documents such as official statements, papers, legal opinions, administrative documents describing the various positions held by A. Cassese. A third of the fond is composed of correspondence that gives information on Cassese’s personal and professional relationships and on the cultural context in which he worked. The collection also includes press articles written by Cassese and interviews, which give a significant insight into Cassese’s opinion and thoughts. The fond also comprises photos, audio cassettes and DVDs concerning mostly conferences, seminars and interviews. Source of acquisition: The fond was deposited in May 2015 by Silvia Fano, Cassese's wife. System of arrangement: The original file arrangement has been widely maintained. The correspondence has been kept in the original order organized in different ways (according to addresses, subjects and senders). The documents concerning his professional career have been arranged by topic in order to keep every document in its context and to facilitate consultation, respecting as much as possible the provenance principle. Lastly, the series "press" has been organized mainly according to authors, newspapers and in chronological order. Physical characteristics: The documents are generally in very good condition. Notes/remarks: The fond contains some articles written by Cassese and translated for several international newspapers from Albania, Czech Republic, Finland, Qatar, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia etc. Therefore, with these exceptions, there are other languages in addition to the languages referred to above. The first dossier consists of faxes and letters of condolence; the second comprises documents like articles, tributes, website texts in memory of Cassese and documentary material on the ceremonies and the events organised in his honour after his death. This archival unit also includes five books of condolences, two volumes containing articles, e-mails and letters of condolence, as well as seven academic journals with articles dedicated to Cassese’s memory. Access level: Open Document, Open Description PROFESSIONAL CAREER Documents from 1954 to 2011 The series "Professional career" is composed of 16 files which document Antonio Cassese`s career as a professor of International Law, expert in human rights and judge in international courts. Languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian Access level: Open Document, Open Description file: ACA-1 1954 - 2009 PERSONAL DOCUMENTS The documents collected in this file provide information on Cassese's youth and studies. The file contains personal documents, certificates from high school and university studies and of attendance at post graduate institutes, applications, letters of recommendation written by Giuseppe Sperduti, Franco Pierandrei, Enrico Contieri, Flaminio Franchini. The later documents consist of around twenty letters of condolence on the death of his sister Anna Maria in July 1989. In addition to the paper documents, the file contains about thirty items dating from the 1950s until the first decade of the 2000s, including the university record book, the membership cards of the two political parties he belonged to during his youth, union cards, identification cards and passes for libraries and workplaces, the United Nations laissez-passer. Antonio Cassese was born in Atripalda in 1937. After studying classics in Salerno he went to the "Scuola Normale Superiore" in Pisa where he obtained the degree in Law in 1958. He continued his studies at the "J. W. Goethe- Universität Frankfurt A. M." (1958-1959) and at the "Graduate Institute of International Studies" in Geneva (1959- 1960). The file includes several documents regarding Cassese's academic career and him becoming a full Professor, documentary material (applications, letters, reports etc.) concerning various fellowships in the Sixties and in the Seventies and a dossier containing documents of the "Chaire internationales de recherche Blaise Pascal" (2000- 2001). The file also comprises job contracts or documents related to them, including the contract with "Stanford University in Italy" (2005), the appointments for the role of legal expert for the Italian embassy in Berna (1985) and for Judge of the appeals chamber of the "Special Tribunal for Lebanon"(2009).
