Artistic Geography and the Northern Jesuit Missions of New Spain By Clara Bargellini Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México [email protected] (working paper, not be reproduced without the author’s permission) George Kubler´s seminal thoughts on artistic geography came out of his involvement with the art and architecture of the Hispanic New World. This paper examines a group of 17th and 18th century Jesuit missions in northern Mexico in order to expand our understanding of New World artistic geography, and also to explore the history of some geographic notions and their place in art historical discussions. Whereas Kubler was concerned with the transmission of styles, my interest here will be the movement of specific objects and individuals within a particular historical configuration. This will involve, of course, considerations about patronage and institutions, with some references to iconography, all of which ultimately has implications for the transmission of styles, as Kubler would no doubt have recognized. The missions in question were established in the first half of the 17th century by the Jesuits in the northern Tepehuan and Southeastern Tarahumara region, and were held by the Society until its 1767 expulsion from New Spain. From their arrival in 1572 the Jesuits focused on ministry among the native population of New Spain. Almost at once they began missionary activity among the indigenous populations in places near Mexico City. By 1580 they were established at Tepotzotlán learning native languages. In 1589 the Jesuits were among the legendary chichimecas at San Luis de la Paz, and two years later they were in Sinaloa, where they established an extraordinary system of missions about which we now have only documents and very sparse remains. -

The olive was native to Asia Minor and spread from Iran, Syria and Palestine to the rest of the Mediterranean basin 6,000 years ago. It is among the oldest known cultivated trees in the world - being grown before the written language was invented. It was being grown on the Isle of Crete by 3,000 BC and may have been the source of the wealth of the Minoan kingdom. The Phoenicians spread the olive to the Med- iterranean shores of Africa and Southern Europe. -

RAPPORT D’ACTIVITÉ 2018 1/44 2018, une année riche en émotion ! Juste un aurevoir ! Douze de présidence qui n’ont pas été de tout repos avec des campagnes records aussi bien vers le haut que vers le bas, des crises à gérer, des mécontentements bien sûr mais aussi de belles réussites. Olivier Nasles a su bien s’entourer pour dynamiser l’interprofession, faire en sorte qu’elle réponde au mieux aux demandes de la filière et aux évolutions du monde qui l’entoure. Son engagement, son attachement à la filière oléicole ne sont plus à prouver. Oliviers Nasles a dit au-revoir à sa fonction de président de l’AFIDOL le 22 juin 2018, certainement Olivier Nasles quitte la présidence avec un pincement au coeur mais pour mieux voguer vers de nouvelles de l’AFIDOL, ses administrateurs lui aventures. Il n’abandonne pas la filière ni l’AFIDOL puisqu’il devient rendent hommage(juin) trésorier de la structure. Une fonction plus discrète mais une implication aux côtés du nouveau prsident toujours aussi forte. Un nouveau président et un nouveau directeur Laurent Bélorgey, 43 ans, ingénieur de formation, oliveron du Domaine familial La Lieutenante à St Martin de Crau, Président de la Confédération Française des Producteurs d’Olives (CFPO) depuis sa création en 2016, a été élu Président de l’AFIDOL. Pour lui, les enjeux auxquels la filière doit répondre dans les années à venir sont : • Améliorer la productivité des oliviers en France, • Rendre la filière attractive pour les jeunes, • Professionnaliser les oléiculteurs, • Produire mieux pour répondre aux aspirations environnementales de la société, • Séduire les nouvelles générations de consommateurs. -

Students of Northwest Coast history and cultures have more reasons for enthusiasm about this publication than Keats had about Chapman’s Homer, since it is not merely a language barrier that has been transcended by Iris Wilson’s translation of Mozilio’s eighteenth century Spanish, it is every kind of textual, historical, and ethnographic difficulty that would otherwise stand in the way of the complete utility and enjoyment of this extraordinary document. Noticias de Nutka is largely ethnographic reporting which, although of a rudimentary observational character, nonetheless forms an invaluable record of the first period of contact in the area. Moziiio’s account is based upon his sojourn in Nootka Sound for four months in 1792 as the scientist (botanist-naturalist) of the expedition of Bodega y Quadra. -

RAPPORT D’ACTIVITÉ 2017 1/44 RappoRt d’activités aFidoL - 2016 RAPPORT MORAL DU PRÉSIDENT Le Der des Der ? Douzième et dernier rapport moral ! Pour l’occasion, j’ai pris le temps de relire les onze précédents, une chose est certaine, j’ai de la constance pour prêcher dans le désert… Je vous épargnerai le « Rider digest » de mes propos au fil du temps puisque je suis certain que chacun de ces rapports est posé sur votre table de nuit… Mais je me suis amusé à reprendre les quatre questions que je me posais dans le Rapport 2006 pour voir si les réponses que j’apportais alors, étaient toujours d’actualité ! Première question : La place pour une filière française de l’olive et de l’huile existe-t-elle réellement ? Douze ans plus tard, la question reste entière ! D’un point de vue « Economie de marché » la réponse est non ! Détenir 3 à 5% d’un marché peut ne pas sembler raisonnable, mais si on intègre des notions d’entretien du territoire, de pérennités des paysages et de préservation de notre patrimoine historique, la réponse est plus nuancée. Ce qui est certain, c’est que nous sommes dans une niche. Le propre d’une niche est de faire croire à celui qui est à l’extérieur que la place dans la niche est bonne, lui donnant envie d’y entrer. S’en suit une bataille entre les occupants historiques de la niche et ceux qui veulent s’y faire une place au soleil. Le vrai danger est que, sous la pression, la niche explose et que tout le monde se retrouve sur le carreau. -

OLIYE CULTURE IN THE UNITED STATES. By NEWTON B. PIERCE, Assistant, Division of Vegetable Physiology and Pathology, U. S. Department of Agriculture. THE OLIVE REGION OF THE UNITED STATES. • The true North American olive belt—the region especially adapted to the growth and production of this fruit—includes a portion of Mexico proper, all of Lower California, and much of the State of Cali- fornia, exclusive of the mountain tops. There is another large sec- tion of the United States where the olive will grow, but which is not specially adapted to its extensive and successful cultivation. This region includes parts of Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ala- bama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and probably also small por- tions of southwestern Utah and southwestern Nevada. The region particularly adapted to olive culture is, as already indicated, on the Pacific Slope, and this constitutes one of the largest and finest olive areas in the world. The olive belt included within California is from 600 to 700 miles long and varies in width from 30 to 125 miles or more. If this belt were cut down to a width of 20 miles, which is greatly below its real average, and to a length of 500 miles, it would represent an area of 6,400,000 acres, or more than twice the area, according to ofiScial returns, of the land now set to olives in Spain, the most extensive olive-growing country in the world. This area adapted to olives within a single State embraces southern California and the region west of the Sierra Nevadas as far north as the upper portion of the Sacramento Valley and along the coast valleys and coast ranges to some distance north of San Francisco.
