This thesis has not been submitted for a degree at another university. 5 TEMPORALITIES AND FRACTURES IN POST -NAPOLEONIC ITALY : LEOPARDI AND VICO ’S LEGACY ABSTRACT This dissertation discusses whether Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) can be considered a philosophical heir of Giambattista Vico (1668-1744), as some scholars retain, despite the fact that there is no evidence that Leopardi read Vico’s New Science or other works until late (1828); too late to demonstrate a direct influence of the philosopher’s thought on the deepest nexuses of Leopardi’s reflection. This dissertation clarifies how Leopardi responded to Vico-related questions characterizing the culture of his time through an innovative methodology that looks at the diffraction of Vico’s ideas in Bourbon Restoration Italian culture. This work aims to paint a dynamic picture of Italian nineteenth- century polycentric culture through a geographical organization of the material; it in fact tackles the diffusion of Vico’s works and ideas from Naples to Venice (Chapter 1), to Milan (Chapter 2), to Leopardi’s hometown Recanati (Chapter 3), to Florence (Chapter 4), and again to Naples (Chapter 5). The Main Research Questions: Vico’s Legacy, Vico’s ‘Heir’ This dissertation tackles a long-term propensity in Italian thought: the tendency to negotiate tradition and innovation, ancient and modern, continuity and fracture. 1 This cultural pattern is particularly evident if we take into account a fundamental vector of the Italian philosophical tradition, connecting Giambattista Vico (1668-1744) and his seminal system with the culture of Bourbon Restoration Italy, and in particular with the thought of Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837). This work therefore approaches the resurfacing of Vico’s thought in Post- Revolutionary Italy and its perceived influence in the period as a prism for understanding the peculiarities of that context and its main cultural dynamics. Tracking a hidden self-portrait in Savinio’s homage to Giacomo Leopardi, we encounter the problem of identity and the question of cultural belonging. This key issue seems to unite Savinio with Leopardi: both can be considered as outsiders within their culture, and this status appears to be globally connected with their modernity. Thus, dealing with Savinio and Leopardi promises to provide further understanding of “anti-modern” Italian culture from its margins. Franco Sbarberi Abstract: Benedetto Croce taught Norberto Bobbio to distinguish between two kinds of commitment, namely an intellectual and a political one. The expression “politica della cultura” effectively translates the idea of the autonomy or independence of scholarly and intellectual research. Another idea which was passed on from Croce to Bobbio is that of liberalism as the theoretical basis of every form of civil government insofar as the liberal conception rejects any notion of “Providence” as a covert agent of history. But Bobbio differed from Croce since he never believed that democracy could essentially contradict the perspective of liberalism, and was convinced that true emancipation is a sort of “conguagliamento delle libertà,” or, in other words, that it implies a strong relation between individual political rights and the demands of social justice. In the Preface to a bibliography of his writings that was published in 1984, Bobbio made reference to a “half-score” of his preferred authors. For the early modern period the selection seemed “almost inevitable” as far as the names of Hobbes, Locke, Kant, and Hegel were concerned. For more contempo- rary authors, on the other hand, he specifically singled out Croce, Cattaneo, Kelsen, Pareto, and Weber since they all represented, at one point or another, a crucial point of reference either for his own political development or for the considerable range of his intellectual interests (which also show him to have been a subtle analyst and systematic interpreter of the classic writers).

Il 17 giugno 1837, a tre giorni dalla morte di Giacomo Leopardi, il Ranieri scriveva al conte Monaldo per annunciargli il triste evento. Pochi giorni dopo, il 26 giugno, riprendeva la penna per descrivergli in dettaglio gli ultimi giorni del poeta. Con più misura, il 18 luglio, gli accennava e accludeva: «la prima notizia che ho mandata del mio adorato amico a questo nostro giornale letterario intitolato il Progresso» (sc. “Il Progresso delle Scienze, delle Lettere e delle Arti”, vol. XVII, Anno VI, n. 33, quaderno di maggio, Napoli, dalla Tipografia Plautina, 1837, p. 166 s.). Si tratta di un breve necrologio, che da qualcuno, non del tutto a torto, è stato definito la miglior cosa scritta dal Ranieri su Leopardi. E certo non ha né la pesantezza né la prolissità della Notizia2 premessa all’edizione fiorentina del ‘45, e nella sua essenzialità, merita di essere conosciuto.
