May 1st, 2010 v Abstract Obedience, Confrontation and Riposte: The Internet and The Traditional Media in Mainland China Mei Huang, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2010 Supervisor: Chien-hsin Tsai This thesis discusses the relationship between the two forces—the Internet and the conventional media, and the rules and etiquette that have governed these media from the mid-1990s to present day. I divide the history of interaction between them into three phases, corresponding to different power balances and stances in the field of cultural production. The Internet and Internet Culture As a new medium, the Internet challenges conventional media in Mainland China and struggles with them. In this thesis, I discuss the relationship between the two forces—the Internet and conventional media (such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines),1 and the rules and etiquette that have governed these media from the mid-1990s to present day. These relationships, unwritten rules and etiquette, which I will refer to as “codes”2 of their competition, form the ground of their existence and set the parameters for their competition with one another. By analyzing three Internet-themed TV talk show episodes, I examine three different phases of this competition, probing how the Internet has gradually evolved 1 In this thesis, “traditional media,” “conventional media” and “mainstream media”, all refer to all forms of media that appear in use by the official power before the Internet and have already been taken fully control of the official power. I emphasize television though, though my emphasis is on television. 2 Lessig first describes the term “code” of the Internet, which is comparable to the law in society: the Internet, the software, and the rules are created by various groups such as state organs, individuals, and companies. The code represents the combination and interaction of the software, hardware, and rules and etiquette of the Internet. The structure of the code derives, therefore, from the power struggles between different groups. As Lessig argues: “We can build, or architect, or code cyberspace to protect values that we believe are fundamental, or we can build, or architect, or code cyberspace to allow those values to disappear. [. .] Code is never found; it is only ever made, and only ever made by us.” See Lessig, Lawrence, Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace (New York: Basic Books, 1999), 6. The foci of this study are on the investigations of the warriors as the feminised Other from two aspects: their bodies as spectacles and the manifestation of feminine characteristics in the male warriors. This study aims to detect what lies underneath the beautiful masquerade of the warriors as the Other through comprehensive analyses of the representations of feminised warriors and comparison with their female counterparts. It aims to test the hypothesis that gender identities are inventory categories transformed by and with changing historical context. Simultaneously, it is a project to study how Chinese traditional values and postmodern metrosexual culture interacted to formulate Chinese contemporary masculinity. It is also a project to search for a cultural nationalism presented in these films with the examination of gender politics hidden in these feminisation phenomena. With Laura Mulvey‘s theory of the gaze as a starting point, this research reconsiders the power relationship between the viewing subject and the spectacle to study the possibility of multiple gaze as well as the power of spectacle.

The primary objective of the study is to gain a better understanding of literary translation between two distinctly different languages by objectively describing and analyzing the factors relevant to the production of the two translations. The secondary objective is to evaluate the two translations by using the functionalist approach to translation. To this end, the study determines which of the two translations better serves the purpose of providing South African students of Chinese with insight into and appreciation of some aspects of Chinese culture which would enhance their Chinese studies.

La Chinoiserie fu introdotta in Sicilia un po' più tardi come stile decorativo ben sviluppato dopo essere stato influenzato in un certo grado negli altri paesi europei.     Rule of Law in China and Information Equality-Following Mr. Yi Zhongtian’s Speech Wang Jianjiang Mr. Yi Zhongtian, who became famous in CCTV’s “Lecture Room”, is still vigorous in his mind, and many of his wonderful speeches continue to spread on the Internet. In particular, his recent video on the rule of law in China has gained wider approval. According to Yi Zhongtian, a society ruled by law demands a premise of four types of major equality. That is, humans are equal before the contract, the law, the truth, and the morality. It makes sense, and also has historical and practical grounds, so it should be studied as the subject of rule of law in China. The idea of equality has long been produced by mankind. Lao Tzu in China pointed out in his Five Thousand Words: “The way of heaven is more than enough to make up for the inadequacy; the way of the people is the other way round. The peasant uprisings in Chinese history speaking of “enforcing justice on behalf of heaven” did probably not exceed Lao Tzu, and it is most likely to pull Lao Tzu’s banner to impress others. And Yi Zhongtian’s so-called four types of major equality should be something that appeared in modern human civilization, and it is not as universal as the idea of equality in the world. This is because the four types of major equality not only reflected in ideology, but also more importantly in contract, jurisprudence, truth, and morality, are an organic unity of theory and practice for their embodiment in the ideological consciousness, legal system, social contract, ethics and other various aspects of civilization.
