But first and foremost, I cannot be grateful enough, for everything, to my parents, to whom this dissertation is dedicated. v Abstract The primary thesis of the dissertation is that, contrary to popular views, the translation of proper names is a non- trivial question, closely related to the problem of the meaning of the proper name. The aim of this study is to show what happens to proper names in the process of translation, particularly from English into Hungarian, and to systematise and, within the frames of a suitable theory, explain the phenomena in question. After a presentation in Chapter One of a selection of the literature on the translation of proper names, followed by a discussion of the main points of the research, Chapter Two offers a detailed overview of the major issues in translation and, through analysing the shortcomings of the various traditional approaches, comes to offer support for the claim that translation is best studied within the frames of a general theory of communication. Chapter Three, in turn, introduces the general cognitive and communicative theoretical framework, mainly on the basis of Anderson (1992) and Sperber and Wilson (1986), in which it becomes possible to explain translation not as an isolated phenomenon but as a special form of communication. Chapter Four proceeds to present, based on Gutt (1991), how translation can be characterised within this general framework as an interpretive form of communication. With the theoretical foundations laid, Chapter Five takes up again the specific issue of how proper names behave in translation. First it examines questions of definition, identification, and meaning. It then moves on to consider what problems proper names pose in translation and proposes a set of translation operations, explained in relevance-theoretic terms. vi The case studies presented in Chapter Six attempt to prove that proper names, like any other expression, behave in a more or less predictable way in translation and that this behaviour can be related not so much with which traditional class the name belongs to as with what it contributes to the communication in the particular context. The second subperiod is conditioned by the following factors: sociopolitical events connected with the war in the Donbas, the process of Ukraine’s European integration, intensification of work migration, growth of consumerism and popularity of the Western standards of living. In the sphere of official anthroponyms, i. e. names and surnames, there are two parallel tendencies of transformation: patriotic domestication and exotic novelization. Whereas in the sphere of unofficial anthroponyms —nicknames— there is a clear reaction to the war in the Donbas. KEYWORDS: Ukrainian anthroponymicon, proper name, surname, military nickname (call sign). Radical changes in the sociopolitical life of post-totalitarian Ukraine influenced the structure and functions of the contemporary Ukrainian language, which subsequently modified the system of Ukrainian proper names of the post-soviet period. Democratization, rule of law, the multifacetedness of economy, the official status of the Ukrainian language, and the autonomy of the national minorities —these are the extralinguistic factors which intensified systematic transformation in the sphere of contemporary Ukrainian onomasticon after 1991. The extralinguistic factors of influence on the onymic structure of the contemporary Ukrainian language bring different effects in different subsystems.

    ONOMÀSTICA 5 (2019): 137–156 | RECEPCIÓ 12.3.2019 | ACCEPTACIÓ 10.12.2019 Slovak hydronymy in the European context Juraj Hladký University of Trnava (Slovakia) [email protected] Abstract: Historical Slavic toponymy is the sole basis for understanding the development of Slavic macrodialects and the formation of Slavic languages, including Slovak. In this respect, hydronymic lexis contributes significantly to views on developments in vocabulary. The oldest hydronyms in Slovakia are probably of pre-Slavic (Quadi, Celtic or Roman) origin (for example, the Hron, the Váh, the Nitra rivers and others). The older pre-Slavic-Slovak hydronymy provides evidence of the differentiation of dialects in the earlier periods (until the 10th–12th century). The younger Slovak hydronymic inventory is supplemented by Slovak-adapted foreign hydronyms (mainly of German and Hungarian origin). They reflect the degree of historical inter-lingual contacts in the regions of Slovakia and complete the diachronous-synchronous view of Slovak lexis. The study describes the tradition and outlines the results of hydronomastic studies in Slovakia and the relatively comprehensive characterization of Slovak hydronymy undertaken by the Hydronymia Slovaciae project. In line with the methodology employed by the Hydronymia Europaea project, all documented hydronyms have been systematically processed in individual river basins, from the oldest to the most recent. The analysis of the complex corpus of both existing and extinct hydronyms, in addition to its recognised linguistic (lexical-semantic, structural-typological characteristics, motivation) goals, has served in the reconstruction of the original non-linguistic side of the proper names, their standardization and cartography, etc. Thanks to methodologically similar hydronomastic research in other Slavic countries, the results of the studies in Slovakia can be applied in a broader Slavic context.

This importance was mainly symbolical: the Irish language was used mainly by revivalist activists, in a restricted number of functional registers, and largely as an enabling platform of other consciousness-raising activities. It is suggested, however, that such a symbolical instrumentalisation is by no means inconsequential and should be analysed as an important feature of cultural nationalism, not only in Irish history. The name semiotic landscape constitutes an integral part of the linguistic landscape, comprising proper nouns and extralinguistic signs referring to, or accompanying names in name plates, signageinpublicspaces, and on various other surfaces. The name semiotic landscape is a component, an aspect, and a consequence of language policy and name policy. The way minority proper nouns can be displayed in public spaces is regulated by laws approved by the state. Some areas (such as personal name plates, business cards, and names of private institutions) are unregulated, and the forms of proper nouns can be chosen freely. This paper seeks to answer the following questions: to what extent are minority language rights implemented in visual name use in settlements populated by Slovakia Hungarians, whether Hungarian name usage is spreading, and to what extent do signage and name plates contain proper nouns in a Hungarian form. In bilingual societies, proper nouns and other signs in the minority language increase the prestige of the minority language and have the function of marking ethnic identity.

    INTRODUCTION Returning to the Past 8 On a tree-lined street in Prague’s upmarket district of Vinohrady, Café Kaaba invites customers to drink a coffee in an interior decorated in ‘Brussels Style’, the late 1950s and early 1960s wave of design that followed the success of the Czechoslovak Pavilion at the World’s Fair in Brussels in 1958. Before enter- ing, Kaaba proudly informs customers of its attitude towards the state social- ist past on its door.1 On a sticker with a crossed-out red circle, where one would often find the symbol of a dog to indicate that pets are not welcome, Kaaba features a crossed-out hammer and sickle. A second sticker displays crossed-out cherries, the symbol of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM), in a clear message that communists are not allowed inside (Figure 0.1). The socialist-era design on show in the café is to be enjoyed not for the political era that gave rise to it, but as one of the many available styles that the free market offers. Though the interior of the café is pleasant, the disclaimer on the door suggests that this should not stimulate nostalgia for how things were in the past. Instead, it turns to an alternative line of Czech history, which sees a continuity of national culture irrespective of political regimes. The message implies a hypothetical projection of the achievements of socialism – its design – without its politics: a state socialism without communists. Such a paradoxical attitude is emblematic of the Czech relationship to state socialism evident in many post-1989 cultural representations of the past and also holds a firm place in public discourse, conducted in the media by politicians, journalists and other commentators, as well as both state and "VELVET RETRO: Postsocialist Nostalgia and the Politics of Heroism in Czech Popular Culture" by Veronika Pehe.

    At the beginning of the 21st century a visible shift Adam Hudek et al. occurred in the Slovak historiography, both thematic and methodological, away from the political history and the nation-centred paradigm of history. The professional development of historiography is more and more inϐluenced by the new generation of historians. They are mostly formed by a suffix ‐ ky, or ‐sky. Here are some examples: PRAZSKY from Praha, MOHELNICKY from Mohelnice, KOLINSKY from Kolin, PALACKY from Palacov or BILOVSKY from Bilov or Bilovec. The surnames derived from villages or towns, may be also in second grammar case (genitive): SKOUNIC, or SKAUNITZ, KLECAN (i.e. from Klecany), or may describe simply an inhabitant from a town: PRAZAN, PRAZAK (inhabitant of Prague). Here can be included the surnames, indicating a citizen from foreign country or region: NEMEC (came from Germany), SLEZAK (from Silesia), MORAVEC (from Moravia) or HANAK (a Moravian fertile region around Olomouc), SLOVAK (from the south of Moravia or from Slovakia). f) Trade and Occupation. Another big group of surnames is formed by those, derived from the names of occupation, or of social status (see above as well). Thus there is a surname of KOVAR (smith), KOLAR (cart‐wright), KADLEC (weaver), RYBAR (fisherman), but also in German form FISCHER or FISER, MLYNAR or in German MUELLER resp. MILER or TESAR (carpenter). Adding a prefix or suffix or its diminutive form has already certain expressive meaning: NEKOVAR (a smith who is better to keep out of the way), TESARIK (a carpenter, rather small by the skill or height).
