Lone Star Elementary School

Dear Parent/Guardian:

This month our school will embark on a special project, a schoolwide book club called One School, One Book. Every family will receive a copy of the same book and will be asked to read it at home during the month of March and the first week of April. I am personally asking that your family participate in this special activity.

Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader and it is also a fun family activity. Through the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school.

Your child will receive his/her copy of the chosen book after a special school-wide assembly introducing the program and the book. When the book comes home, you will receive a reading schedule so you will know which chapter to read each night. Each chapter should take about 15 minutes to read.

In school, your child will be invited to answer daily questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child takes pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In class, there may be various activities which explore the book. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so your child can be included in the schoolwide activities and contests.

One School, One Book is a novel program in that children at all grade levels will be listening to the same book. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also know that you should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still hold older children’s interest.

Good luck! I look forward to joining with all the Lone Star families as we enjoy our special book together!

You are invited to attend the assembly on Friday, March 7, at 9:30 when the students learn the name of the book. Please remember to visit to sign-in before the assembly.
