COMMUNIQUÉ NORTHWOOD WOMAN’S CLUB NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2017

THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

NEW YORK! NEW YORK! HERE WE COME! DECK THE HALLS WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY! HO! HO! MISTLETOE FOR YOU AND ME! TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY! IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! Kay Dube

Our November meeting was lively and interesting. Dine By Design Chairs Jenise Hurley and Jan Ledbetter kicked-off NWC’s 2018 Dine By Design theme by greeting us with sounds of New York! New York! sung by the old crooner himself at our monthly meeting held on November 16, 2017 at Lakewood Country Club. This was followed by the Stampede Dancers from J. J. Pearce High School who danced to the sounds of New York! New York! in a performance specially choreographed for NWC by Heather Barajas, the sponsor of the Stampede Dancers. Yes, ladies our Dine By Design theme is New York! New York! and all the sights and sounds of New York. Please contact Jenise and Jan to guarantee your reservation for a table at this year’s Dine By Design that will be held on February 27, 2018 at Bent Tree Country Club. BTW, one of the Stampede Dancers is the grandson of new member Doris Dunkerley. Doris, congratulations on having such a handsome and special grandson! In addition to the kick-off to Dine By Design, we heard from Brigadier General and 29-year veteran of the U. S. Air Force Patrick Mordenta, who is currently the Director of the George W. Bush Presidential Library. Brigadier General Patrick Mordenta shared highlights from his career that included Benghazi briefings in Senate Committee hearings, events that led up to his appointment as the Director of the George W. Bush Presidential Library, and experiences at the George W. Bush Presidential Library. We were pleased that a number of husbands, family members, and other guests attended the November meeting! Husbands who attended the November meeting included Earl Barnette (Joan), Garry Bounds (Peggy), Henry Knapek (Doris), Bill Miller (Ann), and Tom Purcell (Nancy). Family members who attended as the guests of Doris Dunkerley included Scott Dunkerley, Janet Dunkerley, and Jana Brooks. Pamela Waldron attended as the guest of Mary Wheat. Welcome husbands and guests! With December sneaking in, we find ourselves in the midst of the Holiday Season with the mere blink of an eye. The New Members under the direction of Amy Brady and Wynell Esson have planned this year’s Sherry Party that promises to be festive and entertaining. Become energized with the spirit of the Holiday Season by attending the Sherry Party that will be held this year on December 07, 2017 at Carol Dever’s home. Bring that special gift for a child or teenager so their holiday dreams might be filled with visions of sugar plums and the realization that the belief of the spirit of Santa continues to live in hearts of believers. Good News! Suzanne Caruso and Phyllis Farragut reported this week that NWC’s E-Trade Account is now open and ready for business. If for tax reasons or other reasons you or others you know would like to make a gift of equities or other appropriate gift through our E-Trade account before the end of the year, please contact Suzanne or Phyllis who will be able to provide guidance of how the process works. Suzanne and Phyllis will present a formal report at the January Meeting. Hats Off to Communications Director Yvonne Specht who through her skills and endeavors brought NWC into the social scene spotlight with publicity of K-17 finding its way into the Dallas Morning News and more recently on December 01, 2017 into coveted Sweet Charity column! Thank you, Yvonne! Hats Off to Historian Jan Folmar, who never misses a NWC event or opportunity to snap a picture. Jan has done an excellent job of photographically memorializing our events and activities. Thank you, Jan! Hats Off to The Love Connection chair Joan Barnette and her committee who remember those members in the time of special needs. Thank you, Joan and TLC committee members! Mark your calendars for NWC’s January meetings. The second Alternative Meeting of the Club year will be held on January 13, 2018 at the Cooper Clinic. At the General Meeting that will be held on January 25, 2018 at Park City Club we will hear from Doug Bass, Chief of Emergency Services & Manager of Homeland Security for Dallas County. Details will be announced. My ears remain open to any suggestions or comments you might have and I want to hear from you. Do not think that your ideas and comments are not important. All ideas, comments, and thoughts are important. Open dialogue is invited. So please do not hesitate to call me at (214) 943-0012 (afternoons preferred) or on my cell (713) 823-6019 or e-mail [email protected]. Ladies, thank you for Stepping Up To The Plate! "A dozen ladies gathered in early November to decorate Christmas wreaths for formerly homeless families now living in the apartment complex operating by Interfaith Family Services. Families will be able to select the wreath of their choice at Interfaith's Christmas store. Our members were creative and dedicated. We had a most productive and fun morning at this annual event made possible by NWC Special Projects funding." On November 18th – National Adoption Day – twenty-one NWC volunteers, six husbands and friends and one son gathered at the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center to assist Dallas CASA in celebrating the adoption of 65 children into safe and forever homes. What a wonderful day it was for those new families and for those of us who got to witness the adoptions and share in the celebrations! In addition to those who worked on Saturday morning – all of whom provided cookies – an additional fourteen NWC members provided cookies and popcorn for the children, their families and friends. “Super Hero” balloons were provided by NWC to adoptees and their siblings. Thanks to the NWC members and their husbands, friends and son who participated in National Adoption Day, to the cookies-bakers, the popcorn underwriter and the Special Projects Committee which provided funding for the event. Elizabeth Jenkins, NWC National Adoption Day Chairman

A Happy Thanksgiving to an Emily’s Place Family

A turkey with all the trimmings was presented to Barbara Homrighausen, Volunteer Coordinator of Emily’s Place, by Lynn Dodson on behalf of Gourmet Lunch V. The turkey dinner provided a family of four their first Thanksgiving since moving into their own home after completing the requirements of Emily’s residential program. We were thrilled to help them celebrate the holiday and send all good wishes for a wonderful holiday season. NWC ladies bring Christmas cheer to Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital

On November 13th railings were decorated to kick start the Christmas season at Scottish Rite Hospital. The evening tree decorating was held on November 28th. This is an annual NWC project that decorates and brings a little Christmas cheer to patients, staff and visitors alike.

At the November 16th general meeting the membership approved the selection of the Callier Center for Communication Disorders as our fund- raising partner and recipient of funds for NWC’s 50th anniversary event in the 2018-2019 club year. NWC will work with Callier to establish and fund the Northwood Woman’s Club Patient Care Endowment Fund which will provide care to children and adults who would otherwise not be able to afford care at Callier. Callier will work with NWC’s fund-raising committee to establish this fund, and Callier has agreed to match whatever amount NWC raises up to $250,000. In addition, if there is sufficient raised, a room at the Callier Center on the UTD campus will bear NWC’s name. No commitment has been made regarding the amount of money to be raised or future contributions to the fund by NWC. However, Callier will continue to add to the fund through their own fund-raising efforts.

Plans for NWC’s 50th anniversary celebration are underway. Watch for more information in the spring about the event and how you can join in the celebration.
