Message from B4RN in Heversham Milnthorpe and Ackenthwaite

Deadline to get High Speed Broadband

We are keen that no-one misses out on the chance to connect their property to the B4RN superfast broadband service – effectively for free. The deadline for voucher applications is 31st March 2021 and we’ve no information if an alternative scheme will replace it. If you have registered, then your funding is secured.

Advantages of B4RN and the voucher scheme

Residents who are connected get around 800Mb/s if a direct wired connection is used or 200Mbs on wireless - fast enough to watch films or drama online without interruption. Several users (eg teenagers) can use the system at once It makes your property more saleable. We are aware of new residents pleased that B4RN is either installed or arriving soon It will cost you very little (around £30) Volunteers do all the actual digging and installing You get a dig grant from B4RN (£150 residence, £300 business) No penalty for early cancellation

Disadvantages

We haven’t found any! If you are in an existing contract with another supplier, there may be a duplication of charges

Once the voucher scheme has finished, we do not know what the likely costs of installing will be, or if the local volunteer scheme will continue. If you register now, and take the service, even if you cancel early, the village will benefit from the income related to your property.

If you would like to know more contact Iain Richards on 07824349270 or [email protected]

Reminder – the deadline is 31st March 2021

AndreaPiacuadio Thanksfor photo: the If you’re caring for a person with dementia and are looking at ways to keep them occupied and engaged, why not help them to join our weekly zoom activity sessions. Feedback from our last programme was extremely positive and people who were previously unfamiliar with computers and tablets, quickly settled in and got actively involved.

Every Thursday afternoon between 2 to 3pm starting on 4th February and running through to 6th May. Please note we may run the same session in the morning if interest is strong.

Most sessions will include chat, fun videos and music. Gilli and Becky’s sessions may involve creating very simple items from everyday things you’re likely to have at home (we’ll let you know in advance what’s needed). To book a place please email [email protected] or ring 07816 895021 With Subject Dates Gilli A light-hearted look at this season's 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th Feb Festivals and Traditions. The Way Homeless Scarf Challenge 2021

The Endmoor Crafters Group are going to be knitting or crocheting scarfs the equivalent length of the Cumbria Way! They are asking other groups to join in by knitting/ crocheting scarfs for them. Scarfs are to measure 6 x 60 inches. They can be any colour, but dark is best for those who are homeless.

It will take 73,000 scarfs in total to ‘craft’ the way, and our challenge is to have this number by the end of December 2021. Our MU group plan to have sent at least 50 or more by this date!

The scarfs will be donated to the homeless in Cumbria and elsewhere. This challenge is open to all. Please consider taking part, either by knitting scarfs, or donating wool to those who are knitting.

This is something many of us can get involved in during these days of lockdown and all scarfs will go to a good cause. Enjoy your knitting !

If you have any queries or require more information you can contact Annette Miller 015395 33840 or anyone on the MU committee. You can also find out more from The Cumbria Way Homeless Scarf Challenge on Facebook. 9

letter Dear Friends,

You may be familiar with the 2012 film the King’s Speech starring Colin Firth as King George VI. It tells the story of how our Queen’s father was trained to overcome his speech difficulties and achieve fluency in public speaking, a skill that became all the more important when he unexpectedly became King in 1936. This personal struggle of one man was then eclipsed by the international struggle of his kingdom and its allies through World War Two. At Christmas 1939, no-one knew what lay ahead. The only certainty for the coming year was that conflict would continue, hardship and loss would follow. What message did this one man bring to millions of people around the globe? For his broadcast message of Christmas 1939, George VI quoted from the preamble to an obscure poem written over thirty years previously, called God Knows, “And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And he replied: ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.’ So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.” Those now-famous lines from academic Minnie Louise Haskins have become part of the narrative of wartime Britain. They are inscribed at the entrance to the George VI memorial chapel at Windsor, and were recalled in 2002 at the funeral of the Queen Mother. The truth those words contain are always contemporary and always pertinent, but particularly for the times we now face. After almost twelve months of lockdown and restriction, we see signs of hope for the year ahead. But a sense of fear and uncertainty may loom large as we consider the future. As ever, we move from the known to the unknown, but we can do so with a known companion, the God who has held out his hand to us in Jesus Christ. He is able to meet the changes and chances of this coming year and offers a hope that surpasses scientific breakthrough or government promises. Realism recognizes that 2021 may be a year of continued difficulty or may reverse many of the difficulties of 2020. Realism also recognize that it is AD 2021 – the Year of our Lord. Our calendar acknowledges that God has entered human history uniquely in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Hope you’re doing OK! Who would ever have imagined this would go on for so long? Everyone is having at least one birthday with restrictions this year. Here is the Millennium Bug who came to dinner New Year’s Eve on 31st December 1999 with friends and has been sitting on a computer ever since! If you had told me that New Year’s Eve that the Millennium Bug would be having a Virtual Zoom 21st Birthday Party on 31.12.20 I would have not believed you !
