BOWMER, M.A., B.D., Ph.D. Volume XL June 1975 JOHN WESLEY, LITERARY ARBITER An Introduction to his use of the Asterisk EADERS turning to the edition of his Works published by John Wesley in thirty-two volumes during the years 1771-4 R may naturally be surprised to find him deserting his normal custom (and the normal custom of the century) of using asterisks as the primary means for directing attention to footnotes. Instead he employs daggers, double daggers, parallel lines, the section mark, the paragraph symbol, but only occasionally asterisks, and then ob viously in error.1 On the other hand, the curious reader will also be surprised from time to time to discover that many paragraphs begin with an asterisk. If his curiosity is sufficiently aroused, he may turn to the preface in volume i to discover what Wesley was about. He might also wish to know when W esley began this practice, how fully he carried it out, and upon what principles. Perhaps he would also wonder whether this unusual feature was in fact unique. Wesley was in fact indicating purple passages. He may have derived the idea from Alexander Pope, who prefaced his edition of Shakespeare's works by pointing out: Some of the most shining passages are distinguished by con~mas in the margin; and where the beauty lay not in particulars but in the whole, a star is prefixed to the scene. Pope continued : This seems to me a shorter and less ostentatious method of performing the better half of criticism (namely the pointing out an author's excel lencies) than to fill a whole page with citations of fine passages, with general applauses, or empty exclamations at the tail of them.2 There is no certainty which edition (or editions) of Shakespeare Wesley used, but his diary shows him reading several of the tragedies and histories in 1726-the year after Pope's edition was published. -

Cumbria County History Trust (Database component of the Victoria Country History Project) About the County COMMUNICATIONS IN CUMBRIA : An overview Eric Apperley October 2019 The theme of this article is to record the developing means by which the residents of Cumbria could make contact with others outside their immediate community with increasing facility, speed and comfort. PART 1: Up to the 20th century, with some overlap where inventions in the late 19thC did not really take off until the 20thC 1. ANCIENT TRACKWAYS It is quite possible that many of the roads or tracks of today had their origins many thousands of years ago, but the physical evidence to prove that is virtually non-existent. The term ‘trackway’ refers to a linear route which has been marked on the ground surface over time by the passage of traffic. A ‘road’, on the other hand, is a route which has been deliberately engineered. Only when routes were engineered – as was the norm in Roman times, but only when difficult terrain demanded it in other periods of history – is there evidence on the ground. It was only much later that routes were mapped and recorded in detail, for example as part of a submission to establish a Turnpike Trust.11, 12 From the earliest times when humans settled and became farmers, it is likely that there was contact between adjacent settlements, for trade or barter, finding spouses and for occasional ritual event (e.g stone axes - it seems likely that the axes made in Langdale would be transported along known ridge routes towards their destination, keeping to the high ground as much as possible [at that time (3000-1500BC) much of the land up to 2000ft was forested]. -

However, while the district can offer a quality of life that is second to none, it does experience problems common to many rural areas. There is a need to deliver more balanced communities and reduce inequality, including reducing dependency on high-level services and jobs in towns outside the district, increasing provision of affordable housing and developing and maintaining high-quality modern sustainable transport networks. We must also meet challenging targets laid down by central government, most notably for house building. The challenge is to secure a sustainable level and pattern of development that creates balanced communities and meets local needs whilst protecting the environment that makes the district special. The Core Strategy document sets out the development strategy for South Lakeland outside the National Park areas up to 2025. It is a long-term plan. It draws together strategies of the council and other organisations whose activities have implications for the development and use of land. It puts the aspirations of the Sustainable Community Strategy into effect – seeking to create a sustainable district that is the best possible place to live, work and visit. We are inviting representations from everybody with an interest in the future of our district. -

LOCATION: Stainton Quarry, Long Lane, Stainton with Adgarley, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, LA13 0NN _____________________________________________________________________ 1.0 RECOMMENDATION 1.1 That planning permission is Granted for the reasons stated in Appendix 1 and subject to the conditions in Appendix 2. 2.0 THE PROPOSAL 2.1 This application seeks planning permission to extend the time limit for the extraction of high purity limestone from the deep extension area of Stainton Quarry for a further ten years until 31 March 2025, and thereby delay restoration of this area until 31 March 2026. 3.0 CONSULTATIONS AND REPRESENTATIONS 3.1 South Lakeland District Council’s Planning Department reports that it has no comments to make as regards the application. 3.2 Urswick Parish Council has no objections or comments. Dalton with Newtown Parish Council were also consulted however no reply had been received when this report was prepared. In the event a reply is received in advance of Committee this will be reported to Members on the update sheet. N.B. Dalton with Newton’s Parish boundary is in close proximity to the western boundary of the quarry and the deepening is located within the western side of the quarry. -
