September 2016 – July 2017
SEPTEMBER 2016 –JULY 2017 Director’s Introduction Frances Marshall Photography One of Britain’s foremost singers, Sarah Connolly, opens the Hall’s new season with regular duo partner Malcolm Martineau, leading listeners through a programme rich in emotional contrasts, poetic reflections and glorious melodies. The recital includes Mahler’s sublime Rückert Lieder, the impassioned lyricism of Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été, the exotic subtle narrative impressions of Debussy’s three Chansons de Bilitis, and a selection of Schumann songs. Mark Padmore’s vocal artistry and ability to extract every drop of emotion from poetic texts have secured his place among today’s finest recitalists. Morgan Szymanski, described by Classical Guitar magazine as ‘a player destined for future glories’ joins him on 12 September. Critical acclaim for Angela Hewitt’s Bach interpretations bears witness to the pianist’s extraordinary ability to connect physically and emotionally as well as intellectually with the dance rhythms and expressive gestures of the composer’s keyboard works. The Bach Odyssey will highlight all of this over the next four years. Canadian soprano Barbara Hannigan performs like a force of nature, captivating audiences with her artistry’s presence and expressive vitality. She joins the Calder Quartet, winner of the 2014 Avery Fisher Career Grant, for the world première of The sirens cycle by Peter Eötvös. Beethoven’s piano sonatas occupied forty years of his life. They offer insights into his development as artist and individual, and stand among the greatest of all his works. Igor Levit, now in his late 20s, drew critical superlatives to his debut recording of Beethoven’s late sonatas and has since established his reputation as a visionary interpreter of the composer’s music. -
Yes, Virginia, Another Ballo Tragico: the National Library of Portugal’S Ballet D’Action Libretti from the First Half of the Nineteenth Century
YES, VIRGINIA, ANOTHER BALLO TRAGICO: THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF PORTUGAL’S BALLET D’ACTION LIBRETTI FROM THE FIRST HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ligia Ravenna Pinheiro, M.F.A., M.A., B.F.A. Graduate Program in Dance Studies The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Karen Eliot, Adviser Nena Couch Susan Petry Angelika Gerbes Copyright by Ligia Ravenna Pinheiro 2015 ABSTRACT The Real Theatro de São Carlos de Lisboa employed Italian choreographers from its inauguration in 1793 to the middle of the nineteenth century. Many libretti for the ballets produced for the S. Carlos Theater have survived and are now housed in the National Library of Portugal. This dissertation focuses on the narratives of the libretti in this collection, and their importance as documentation of ballets of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, from the inauguration of the S. Carlos Theater in 1793 to 1850. This period of dance history, which has not received much attention by dance scholars, links the earlier baroque dance era of the eighteenth century with the style of ballet of the 1830s to the 1850s. Portugal had been associated with Italian art and artists since the beginning of the eighteenth century. This artistic relationship continued through the final decades of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century. The majority of the choreographers working in Lisbon were Italian, and the works they created for the S. Carlos Theater followed the Italian style of ballet d’action. -
Alcina Rediviva. Transformations of an Enchantress in Early Librettos«
!" LIR.JOURNAL.11(19) """""""""""""""! " Dag Hedman, »Alcina rediviva. Transformations of an Enchantress in Early Librettos« " ABSTRACT """"""""""""""""""""""" The aim of this study is to follow the transformations in eighteen librettos of the enchantress Alcina from Ludovico Ari- osto’s popular chivalric epic Orlando furioso (1516–1532). The librettos used were printed in Austria, France, Great Britain and Italy 1609–1782. The texts encompass different genres like ballets, drami/drammi per musica and feste teatrali. There are several reasons for the popularity of Alcina in the theatre of the Baroque Age, among which are her contrasting moods and the possibility of spectacular scenic effects due to the frequent occurrence of magic. The study shows that whereas there is an impressive variety in the librettists’ approach to Alcina’s personality and the plots in which she is involved, there is no clear development of the topic. " Dag Hedman is a Professor of Literature at the Depart- ment of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion, University of Gothenburg. " Keywords: Alcina – sorceress – character development – opera heroine typology – early music drama – libretto " http://lir.gu.se/LIRJ """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""! lir.j.11(19) 66 !" Dag Hedman """" """""""""""""""""! !" ALCINA REDIVIVA. Transformations of an Enchantress in Early Librettos """""""""! !" According to Lorenzo Bianconi and Thomas Walker, Publius Ovidius Naso’s (43 B.C–17/18 A.D.) role as one of the main sources of inspiration for the earliest Italian librettists was soon taken over by Ludovico Ariosto (1474–1533) and Torquato Tasso (1544–1595), who in their turn were replaced in the middle of the seventeenth century by historical sources. A few Ariostan librettos were written in France in the 1680s, however, and soon Ariosto had a revival in Italy, which lasted a bit into the eighteenth century.1 This development, outlined by Bianconi and Walker, has been challenged by David J. -

Musical Women and Identity-Building in Early Independent Mexico (1821-1854)
Musical Women and Identity-Building in Early Independent Mexico (1821-1854) Yael Bitrán Goren Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD Music Department, Royal Holloway, University of London 2012 1 Declaration of Authorship I, Yael Bitrán Goren, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: ______________________ Date: 13 April 2012 Abstract This thesis investigates music in Mexico City, with an emphasis on women's relationship to Romanticism, education, consumption, domestic music-making and public performance. During the first decades after independence in 1821, Mexicans began the process of constructing an identity, which musically speaking meant an expansion of the secular musical world. Such construction involved the development of internal activity alongside a conditional receptivity to external influence in the form of the visits of Italian opera companies such as those of Manuel García and Max Maretzek, and travelling virtuosi such as pianist virtuoso Henri Herz, who brought new repertoire and performance practices to Mexican theatres and homes. As consumers and as musicians, women were at the centre of such developments. In Mexico, both European music and that of local musicians was disseminated by means of ladies’ journals and imported and locally-printed sheet music by foreign and Mexican composers, in order to supply a growing home market for amateurs. Abundant surviving repertoire for the home, the widespread availability of musical instruction as revealed through advertisements, and witness accounts of soirées and concerts in the theatre reveal a budding musical world that has hitherto been overlooked and which occurred during a period generally deemed of little importance in Mexican musical history. -
