Generation Kill and the New Screen Combat Magdalena Yüksel and Colleen Kennedy-Karpat
15 Generation Kill and the New Screen Combat Magdalena Yüksel and Colleen Kennedy-Karpat No one could accuse the American cultural industries of giving the Iraq War the silent treatment. Between the 24-hour news cycle and fictionalized enter- tainment, war narratives have played a significant and evolving role in the media landscape since the declaration of war in 2003. Iraq War films, on the whole, have failed to impress audiences and critics, with notable exceptions like Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker (2008), which won the Oscar for Best Picture, and her follow-up Zero Dark Thirty (2012), which tripled its budget in worldwide box office intake.1 Television, however, has fared better as a vehicle for profitable, war-inspired entertainment, which is perhaps best exemplified by the nine seasons of Fox’s 24 (2001–2010). Situated squarely between these two formats lies the television miniseries, combining seriality with the closed narrative of feature filmmaking to bring to the small screen— and, probably more significantly, to the DVD market—a time-limited story that cultivates a broader and deeper narrative development than a single film, yet maintains a coherent thematic and creative agenda. As a pioneer in both the miniseries format and the more nebulous category of quality television, HBO has taken fresh approaches to representing combat as it unfolds in the twenty-first century.2 These innovations build on yet also depart from the precedent set by Band of Brothers (2001), Steven Spielberg’s WWII project that established HBO’s interest in war-themed miniseries, and the subsequent companion project, The Pacific (2010).3 Stylistically, both Band of Brothers and The Pacific depict WWII combat in ways that recall Spielberg’s blockbuster Saving Private Ryan (1998). -
Film Reviews Jonathan Lighter
Film Reviews Jonathan Lighter Lebanon (2009) he timeless figure of the raw recruit overpowered by the shock of battle first attracted the full gaze of literary attention in Crane’s Red Badge of Courage (1894- T 95). Generations of Americans eventually came to recognize Private Henry Fleming as the key fictional image of a young American soldier: confused, unprepared, and pretty much alone. But despite Crane’s pervasive ironies and his successful refutation of genteel literary treatments of warfare, The Red Badge can nonetheless be read as endorsing battle as a ticket to manhood and self-confidence. Not so the First World War verse of Lieutenant Wilfred Owen. Owen’s antiheroic, almost revolutionary poems introduced an enduring new archetype: the young soldier as a guileless victim, meaninglessly sacrificed to the vanity of civilians and politicians. Written, though not published during the war, Owen’s “Strange Meeting,” “The Parable of the Old Man and the Young,” and “Anthem for Doomed Youth,” especially, exemplify his judgment. Owen, a decorated officer who once described himself as a “pacifist with a very seared conscience,” portrays soldiers as young, helpless, innocent, and ill- starred. On the German side, the same theme pervades novelist Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front (1928): Lewis Milestone’s film adaptation (1930) is often ranked among the best war movies of all time. Unlike Crane, neither Owen nor Remarque detected in warfare any redeeming value; and by the late twentieth century, general revulsion of the educated against war solicited a wide acceptance of this sympathetic image among Western War, Literature & the Arts: an international journal of the humanities / Volume 32 / 2020 civilians—incomplete and sentimental as it is. -

SUICIDE ATTACKS IN AFGHANISTAN: WHY NOW? by Ghulam Farooq Mujaddidi A THESIS Presented to the Faculty of The Graduate College at the University of Nebraska In Partial Fulfillment of Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Major: Political Science Under the Supervision of Professor Patrice C. McMahon Lincoln, Nebraska May, 2013 SUICIDE ATTACKS IN AFGHANISTAN: WHY NOW? Ghulam Farooq Mujaddidi, M.A. University of Nebraska, 2013 Adviser: Patrice C. McMahon Why, contrary to their predecessors, did the Taliban resort to use of suicide attacks in the 2000s in Afghanistan? By drawing from terrorist innovation literature and Michael Horowitz’s adoption capacity theory—a theory of diffusion of military innovation—the author argues that suicide attacks in Afghanistan is better understood as an innovation or emulation of a new technique to retaliate in asymmetric warfare when insurgents face arms embargo, military pressure, and have direct links to external terrorist groups. -

Korengal Discussion Guide
www.influencefilmclub.com Korengal Discussion Guide Director: Sebastian Junger Year: 2014 Time: 84 min You might know this director from: The Last Patrol (2014) Which Way Is the Front Line from Here? The Life and Time of Tim Hetherington (2013) Restrepo (2010) FILM SUMMARY What is war like? What is it like to live in the most base conditions, with no running water, no phone connection, and no security that your life will be yours in a few hours time? Where RESTREPO, the first film in the trilogy by co-directors Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington, showed the battlefield through powerful footage, KORENGAL addresses the men directly, asking them to peel away their armor and reveal the mysterious psychology of war. The concept is not altogether new. In the past soldiers have been asked to reflect upon their wartime experiences but usually long after the fact, when the imagination has been granted time to contort reality. KORENGAL meets the men in the midst of it, questioning them in their bunks, when they are out on patrols, when they are firing off rounds of ammunition, and when they are whittling away time between gun battles. The men are interviewed again, three months after their time in Korengal has come to a close, at their base in Italy. With the memory of fellow soldiers’ deaths still hot in their minds, and the sharp pain of what they recently endured a very poignant reality, KORENGAL presents the hard cold facts from the mouth of the battered warriors. Although RESTREPO’s co-director Hetherington was killed in Libya soon after the film’s release, Junger knew the story they had begun to tell was not complete. -

OPERATION RED WINGS – The (Mis)Information Aftermath Copyright © Ed Darack, 2010, All Rights Reserved – For The Marine Corps Gazette Ed Darack – www.darack.com – [email protected] Published in the January, 2011 issue of the Marine Corps Gazette, Page 62 NOTE: The editors at the Gazette changed the subtitle from “The (Mis)Information Aftermath” to “What Really Happened?” “Don’t let the truth ruin a good story.” – Origin unknown OVERVIEW: The events of OPERATION RED WINGS, which spiraled into disaster shortly after the insert of a four-man Naval Special Operations Forces (NAVSOF) reconnaissance and surveillance team (R and S team) during the opening phase of the operation, present warfighters (and those covering military operations) with a broad array of vital contemporary case studies relevant to those functioning at the battalion staff, company, platoon, and squad levels. These include studies in deconfliction between conventional and special operations forces, the paramount necessity of unity of command / effort, communication in complex mountainous terrain, mountain ambush tactics, and the importance of comprehensive, detailed planning, among others. Despite these lessons (the knowledge of which will arguably save lives in future operations), little has been discussed in professional military papers about OPERATION RED WINGS. However, much has been written and discussed about RED WINGS in general media (which is often referenced by warfighters for their ongoing professional military education), and much of this, including the content of two books on the topic, is rife with misinformation. BACKGROUND, KEY POINTS, AND AFTERMATH OF OPERATION RED WINGS: In November, 2004, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines (3/3) arrived in RC-East (Regional Command – East, Afghanistan) and assumed responsibility of their area of operations (AO), which included the restive Kunar Province. -
