SHORT SYNOPSIS After working for the summer on Martha’s Vineyard, Lena’s (28) plans to return home fall through. A local farmer, Kellen (50s), hires her and she forges relationships with her co-workers, his wife Becca (40s), and their precocious daughter Sadie (10). At first, Lena’s experiences on the farm are welcoming and she strikes a close relationship with Sadie. However, over time Lena senses that Sadie is troubled. When a co-worker goes missing, Lena presses Sadie for answers, only to discover that there is a murderer amongst them. LONG SYNOPSIS We open on a lone oak tree centered in a cow pasture. A teenage couple strolls in an open field. A sweet scene quickly turns sinister as the young woman rebuffs the man’s advances. He overtakes her, strangling her in the grass. A phone rings. Lena Detroy (28) on a pay-phone listens to her drunken mother explain that she has sublet her apartment. Lena’s plans to return home are derailed. At a liquor store, Lena meets Becca, a local woman, and her precocious daughter, Sadie (10). Becca mentions that her husband, Kellen, is hiring for the landscaping business that he runs out of their farm. Lena enjoys a last drink with her co- workers at the bar she worked at over the summer. Two locals, Devon and Walter, interrupt the moment but their raucous demeanor forces the bartender to tell them to leave. Lena decides to pursue Becca’s offer. She awaits a bus, but Devon shows up in his truck. She accepts a ride to the farm and they share a flirtatious exchange on the drive. At the farm, she meets Kellen, is reintroduced to Becca and meets her new co-worker and roommate, Marge, who tells her the story of “Emily Backus,” who mysteriously disappeared earlier that summer. Lena meets the other landscapers— Cassie, Zoe, Todd and Jimbo—as well as the farmhand Sienna. The camera departs from Lena’s story and we descend into a darkened room to find Sadie. We dissolve into her memory of Emily Backus and discover Emily was murdered. After work the next day, Sadie invites Lena to her secret hiding place where she offers Lena a sweatshirt from her trunk of clothes that reads “Backus”. The two agree to be “sisters.” Later that night, Lena meets Sienna for drinks and a friendship develops. After a confrontation with Jimbo during work, Lena visits the tree to find Becca who invites her for tea. They share personal stories and Becca confirms Sadie’s affection towards Lena. Lena goes fishing with Devon and then to the local bar. The landscaping crew shows up. Walter and Jimbo get into a fight. Devon intervenes, throws Jimbo onto the bar and threatens him with a dart to his BLIND NOMAD PICTURES 5 eye. Horrified, Lena leaves the bar alone. Later that night at the farm, Jimbo is knocked out with a shovel and dragged away. Lena, seeking solace, visits the oak tree and, to her surprise, finds Sadie sitting in the branches. Seemingly shaken, Sadie tells Lena that she doesn’t “want her to go missing”. The next day, after a group BBQ, we find Jimbo strung up in a tool shed. Through an unknown POV Jimbo is murdered. In the morning, Lena and Marge get ready for work when Marge notices the sweatshirt that Sadie gave Lena. Surprised, she informs Lena that it belonged to “Emily Backus” and finds it creepy that Sadie had it. Concerned for Sadie, Lena heads to the Secret Place by herself. Once inside, looking for clues, she discovers Jimbo’s hat. Lena exits and is confronted by Sadie for betraying her trust by going into her Secret Place, but Kellen interrupts the scene. Frightened, Lena accepts his invitation to enter the house to talk. Lena soon finds herself in a fight for her life and entrusted with a responsibility she never thought would be given to her. 15 Generation Kill and the New Screen Combat Magdalena Yüksel and Colleen Kennedy-Karpat No one could accuse the American cultural industries of giving the Iraq War the silent treatment. Between the 24-hour news cycle and fictionalized enter- tainment, war narratives have played a significant and evolving role in the media landscape since the declaration of war in 2003. Iraq War films, on the whole, have failed to impress audiences and critics, with notable exceptions like Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker (2008), which won the Oscar for Best Picture, and her follow-up Zero Dark Thirty (2012), which tripled its budget in worldwide box office intake.1 Television, however, has fared better as a vehicle for profitable, war-inspired entertainment, which is perhaps best exemplified by the nine seasons of Fox’s 24 (2001–2010). Situated squarely between these two formats lies the television miniseries, combining seriality with the closed narrative of feature filmmaking to bring to the small screen— and, probably more significantly, to the DVD market—a time-limited story that cultivates a broader and deeper narrative development than a single film, yet maintains a coherent thematic and creative agenda. As a pioneer in both the miniseries format and the more nebulous category of quality television, HBO has taken fresh approaches to representing combat as it unfolds in the twenty-first century.2 These innovations build on yet also depart from the precedent set by Band of Brothers (2001), Steven Spielberg’s WWII project that established HBO’s interest in war-themed miniseries, and the subsequent companion project, The Pacific (2010).3 Stylistically, both Band of Brothers and The Pacific depict WWII combat in ways that recall Spielberg’s blockbuster Saving Private Ryan (1998).

More than 3,900 episodes produced in the 2014- 2015 network television season and the 2014 cable television season from more than 270 scripted series were analyzed. The breakdown of those episodes by the gender and ethnicity of directors is as follows: Women directed 16% of all episodes, an increase from 14% the prior year. Minorities (male and female) directed 18% of all episodes, representing a 1% decrease over the prior year. Positive Trends The pie is getting bigger: There were 3,910 episodes in the 2014-2015 season -- a 10% increase in total episodes over the prior season’s 3,562 episodes. Additionally, the total number of individual women directors employed in episodic television grew 16% to 150 (up from 129 in the 2013-14 season). The DGA’s “Best Of” list – shows that hired women and minorities to direct at least 40% of episodes – increased 16% to 57 series (from 49 series in the 2013-14 season period).
