Sounds Good It’s A Big Month For Music With Two Award Shows, And Dolly Parton And Reba McEntirere Guest-Hosting The CMAs. By Taylor Neumann The 53rd Country Music Association Awards will celebrate the top artists on the country music charts, with performances from Blake Shelton and Florida Georgia Line. But this year, the show is Dolly Parton also doing something a little different — the theme for the night will celebrate legendary women in country music. For the first time since 2008, Carrie Underwood is hosting without Brad Paisley. Instead, she will be accompanied by special guest hosts Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton. McEntire and Parton, of course, have been instrumental in assisting other female country artists in the Carrie business and providing mentorship to a younger generation. “It’s Underwood an incredible honor to welcome Carrie, Reba and Dolly to the CMA Awards stage this year,” said Sarah Trahern, CMA chief Reba executive officer. “In addition to awarding the year’s best and McEntire brightest in the genre, the 53rd annual CMA Awards [Nov. 13 on ABC] will celebrate the legacy of women within country music, and we couldn’t think of a more dynamic group of women to host the show.” It’s only fitting that a woman leads all nominees this year — Maren Morris earned six nominations, including Album of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. Close behind Morris are Brothers Osbourne with four nominations and country darlings Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Luke Combs, Kacey Musgraves, Shelton, Chris Stapleton and Underwood all with three each. As a business owner and former mayor of Haines, the kindhearted John Schnabel was a favorite on the show for several seasons until he passed at age 96 in 2016. “My grandpa was an absolute legend,” Parker says. “It was an unreal way to grow up. He was a ton of fun to be around and gave me a lot of very good life skills at an early age that have set me up very well for life. For that I will always be thankful.” Last season on Gold Rush Parker had a monster finish, netting over 6,000 ounces of gold, equating to roughly $7.3 million. But Season 10 of Discovery Channel’s No. 1 series (Fridays) finds Parker struggling. Both he and his frequent adversary Tony Beets have water-permitting issues forcing them to make critical decisions to salvage the millions they have invested. “The licensing side of things is extremely boring but has turned into part of our season, unfortunately, because it’s affecting both Tony and my operation pretty massively, so we’re trying to navigate our way around that and it’s not particularly easy,” Parker tells. While he couldn’t share many further details on this season, Parker was able to share that he is looking forward to some upcoming time off this winter. “I tend to work quite a bit, so I don’t get a whole lot of time to get out and enjoy the things I used to do. I used to do a lot of hunting and fishing and I always enjoyed that. Now with these trips I’ve been going on, it kind of sucks up the hunting season and that’s a bummer,” Parker says. “I’m going to go do ommun ications.
