Denver Church Music Federa on Makes the First English Transla on of the George Violakis Typikon Available in America The present work makes available to the Greek Orthodox Church in America, for the first me in complete English transla on, the most authorita ve guide to the order of its services, namely the Typikon of the Great Church of Christ. This new, hardbound Bilingual Edi on of the Typikon (1155 pgs) is iden cal in every respect to the George Violakis Typikon. Project History This trea se was originally composed a er extensive study and delibera on by a commi ee consis ng of four Hierarchs and George Violakis, the Head Chanter (Protopsal s) of the Patriarchate of Constan nople, appointed by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constan nople. It was wri en by Violakis himself and published in Constan nople in 1888. The Holy Patriarchate established the Violakis Typikon as the sole authorita ve document outlining and s pula ng the order (taxis) of all the services celebrated within the Church.
Throughout the centuries, the Church has made a con nuous effort to make its services more inspiring to its worshipers, thus producing over me several Typika, each one amplifying and refining its predecessor. It was this desire to preserve and perpetuate the order and beauty of our church services in America that impelled George T. Demos, M.D., former President of the Na onal Forum, to republish the Typikon by George Violakis. Dr. George wished to reassert the Typikon’s sacramental authority and raise its awareness of our Church in this country by cas ng the book into a bilingual format; the English transla on aligned with and facing the original Greek text exactly, page by opposing page. The English transla on was undertaken by Rev. Robert Athas, who, as both scholar and prac cing liturgist, brought to this demanding task an expert, in mate knowledge of Orthodox ritual. Fr. Athas had already translated the Triodion sec on in the Violakis Typikon as his thesis for his Master of Divinity degree at the St. Vladimir Theological Seminary in New York. Dr. George enlisted the aid of Dr. Theodore Bogdanos to contribute to the further refinement of the transla on and the work’s editorial form. To make the work’s contents more accessible to today’s user and since the original Violakis Typikon was based on the Julian calendar, Dr. Demos and Dr. Bogdanos equated each Julian date with its exactly corresponding date of the Gregorian calendar, which is in use in the Church today. Addi onally, Dr. Demos and Dr. Bogdanos updated the complicated sec on where the yearly shi ing Movable Feasts coincide variously with the Immovable Feasts, whose dates have been fixed for all me. Dr. George added an extensive glossary of terms related to the Typikon; compiled and adapted from various sources. Dr. George fell asleep in the Lord in 2012. A er his death, Dr. George Stefanidakis of Houston, Texas completed the process for prin ng the final version. Dr. Bogdanos fell asleep in the lord in 2019. The publishing arm of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver Church Music Federa on produced this Bilingual Edi on of the Typikon. Demos, M.D., provides the proper order of service for any Divine Liturgy and offers, in chant form, all of the special hymns that might be subs tuted into the services.
