Native Plant Propagation Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge
Native Plant Propagation Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge Kim Martz and Forest Starr June 1999 I. Introduction The purpose of this report is to provide effective and efficient ways of propagating native Hawaiian plants for future out-planting. This report will provide guidelines for nursery maintenance, general propagating and out-planting techniques, and specific information on propagating and out-planting native plant species known from Midway Atoll. The following report is intended to assist in future restoration efforts. Plant names and descriptions were taken from: The Manuals of the Flowering Plants of Hawai'i by Warren L. Wagner, Derral R. Herbst and S. H. Sohmer (1990); In Gardens of Hawai'i by Marie Neal (1965); Flowers of the Pacific Island Seashore by W. Arthur Whistler. Drawings and photos were taken from: The Manuals of the Flowering Plants of Hawai'i by Warren L. Wagner, Derral R. Herbst and S. H. Sohmer (1990) and from Plants of Midway Atoll by Nanette W. H. Seto (date unknown). Propagation techniques and general horticulture information was contributed by: the authors, Kim Martz and Forest Starr; Richard Nakagawa, nursery manager, State Department of Land and Natural Resources on Maui; and Anna Palomino, nursery manager, Ho'olawa Farms Native Plants Nursery on Maui. USFWS October 2012 Refuge Vision Perched on an ancient volcano, reef corals, algae, and clams grow upwards thousands of feet on the foundation built by their ancestors over millions of years. Here, Rose Atoll National Wildlife Refuge glows pink in the azure sea. This diminutive atoll shelters a profusion of tropical life. Encircled by a rose-colored coralline algal reef, the lagoon teems with brilliant fish and fluted giant clams with hues of electric blue, gold, and dark teal. Sea turtles gracefully ply the waters and find safe haven lumbering ashore to lay eggs that perpetuate their ancient species. On land, stately Pisonia trees form a dim green cathedral where sooty tern calls echo as they fly beneath the canopy. Their calls join the cackling of the red-footed boobies, whinnying of the frigate birds, and moaning of the wedge-tailed shearwaters. Inspired by their living history at the atoll, tamaiti perpetuate Fa’a Samoa through an understanding and shared stewardship of their natural world. -

Fosberg Botanist, U. S. Geological Survey A number of fallout surveys have been carried out since the widely publicized Castle Bravo bomb test on Bikini Atoll on March 1, 1954. Three of these were under the auspices of the U. S. Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory (NRDL). Among the results of the first of these sur- veys .was the establishment of a series of stations in the Northern Marshall Lslands in which the amount of fallout varied, irith radiation doses ranging from almost none to doses dangerous to human and animal life. A series of stations selected for subsequent resurvey are listed in order of increasing dose received expressed as total dose to infinity. This figure was obtained from the intensities in roentgens per hour on the day after the shot was fired. These rates were calculated from the earliest actual readings available and are given by Dunning (1957) on a map on page 2. The formula 5 x 24 x 4/hr at D + 1, ~rhereD i1 is as- sumed to be D , 24 hours, is used to calculate total dose to infinity. The time of arrival at Rongelap Islet was about 7 hours after the shot. Beardsley UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, HONOLULU, HAWAII INTRODUCTION The Leeward Hawaiian Islands comprise a chain of small rocky islets, and coral atolls which extend west-northwest of Kauai. Nihoa, the nearest, is about 150 miles from Kauai, while Kure, the furthermost, is some 1,150 miles away (see map, p. 158). All Leeward Islands except Midway and Kure are now a part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This paper summarizes results of recent entomological field work in these islands, and attempts to update the existing lists of insects and other terrestrial arthropods known. The terrestrial arthropod fauna of these islands is a mixture of endemic or indigenous elements and recently, adventive forms. The numbers of endemic species are greatest on the two relatively undisturbed southeastern volcanic islands of Nihoa and Necker, and apparently have disappeared largely from the more northwesterly atolls where, in most cases, the original vegetation has changed drastically in the past 100 years or so. Extinction of native plants and endemic insects has been documented fairly well for Laysan fChristophersen & Caum, 1931, Butler & Usinger, 1963a). Un fortunately, less is known about the original biota of the other atolls. Most recent immigrant insects now known from the Leeward Islands occur also on the larger inhabited islands of Hawaii; however, two species could become serious crop pests should they spread into agricultural areas of the state. -
