Chobanov & Branislava Mihajlova Abstract During the revision of the Orthoptera collection of the Macedonian Museum of Natural History (Skopje) in 2004, four Mantodea and 102 Orthoptera species (al- together 1057 specimens) collected in the Republic of Macedonia were deter- mined. Furthermore, a revision of the literature about the Macedonian orthopte- ran fauna was executed and some own unpublished records were added. As a result of the present study, eight taxa are added and 27 taxa are subtracted from the list of the Macedonian fauna. Thus, the updated check list of the Orthoptera fauna of Macedonia comprises four species of Mantodea, 167 Orthoptera taxa and two additional subspecies. The study also revealed that two Orthoptera spe- cies must be eliminated from the list of the Serbian fauna. Zusammenfassung Im Zuge der Bearbeitung der Orthopterensammlung des Naturhistorischen Mu- seums von Mazedonien (Skopje), im Jahre 2004, konnten vier Mantiden- und 102 Orthopterenarten (zusammen 1057 Individuen), die in der Republik Mazedo- nien gesammelt wurden, untersucht werden. Zusätzlich wurde eine umfangreiche Literaturstudie über die mazedonische Orthopterenfauna durchgeführt, die weite- re Nachweise lieferte. Die vorliegende Studie ergab acht neue Taxa für Mazedo- nien, wohingegen 27 der für die mazedonische Fauna angegebenen Taxa nicht in Mazedonien vorkommen. Die aktuelle Checkliste der Orthopterenfauna Maze- doniens enthält somit vier Arten Gottesanbeterinnen, 167 Heuschreckenarten und zwei weitere Unterarten. -
Bugs & Beasties of the Western Rhodopes
Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’. -

EXTENDS TO THE INAUDIBLE RANGE Abstract - Cesare Brizio, Guido Pagliano & Filippo Maria Buzzetti - Th e burrowing buzz of Sphex sp. extends to the inaudible range. In recent years, several species of Orthopterans were fi eld-recorded by authors 1 and 3 thanks to an innovative, low cost USB microphone with a sampling frequency of 250 kHz. In August 2019, during an acoustic exploration for Orthopterans, author 1 intercepted sounds from a burrow in the soil, from which a Sphecid wasp – here tentatively determined as Sphex funerarius (Gussakovskij, 1934) – emerged and was photographed in suboptimal conditions during the recording session. While the quality of the digital audio tracks was satisfactory, the collection of the buzzing specimen proved unfeasible. We provide a concise review of scientifi c literature about burrowing behaviour in Sphecidae, in particular covering those sources that describe the buzzing sound associated with the burrow excavation, and propose a comprehensive review of the audio samples obtained, including envelopes, spectrograms and frequency analyses, and revealing the previously unreported extension well into the ultrasonic domain, up to 70 kHz and above, of the buzzing sound emitted by burrowing Sphecoidea. -

YlLDIRIM Abstract: This study bases on material collected from different localities of Turkey, between 1969-2003. 12 species and subspecies belonging to five genera in the tribe Platynini are recorded. Among them, Calathus syriacus CHADOIR 1863 and Calathus ambiguus (PAYKULL 1790) were the most abundant and widespread species. However, Calathus ambiguus dilutus CHADOUIR 1842, Calathus erythroderus GEMMINGER & HAROLD 1868, Dolichus halensis (SCHALLER 1783) and Sphodrus leucophthalmus (LlNNEAUS 1758) are new records for the Turkish fauna. Separately, synonym and distribution of these species were given in this study. Key words: Coleoptera, Carabidae, Platynini, Fauna, Turkey. Introduction The first part of the contribution to the knowledge of Carabidae fauna of Turkey covered the tribe Harpalini. The second part includes the tribe Platynini. The information related to the material was given in part 1 (KESDEK & YlLDIRIM 2003). Results In this study, 12 species and subspecies of five genera belonged to Platynini tribe of Carabidae were reported in Turkey. Distribution in Turkey: Anatolia (No locality) (TAGLIANTI & CASALE 1999). Biodiversity Journal, 2015, 6 (1): 341–352 MONOGRAPH Ground beetles (Coleoptera Carabidae) diversity patterns in forest habitats of high conservation value, Southern Bulgaria Rumyana Kostova Sofia University, Faculty of Biology, Department of Zoology and Anthropology, 8 “DraganTzankov” blvd., Sofia 1164, Bulgaria; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The study presents a comparison between the diversity of the carabid beetles taxocoenoses and their spatial distribution in different forest types of high conservation value in Strandzha (8 sites), the Rhodopes (4 sites) and Belasitsa (6 sites) mountains. The diversity indices have demonstrated the highest species richness and the highest diversity values in the riverside sites of Strandzha Mountain. The lowest species richness has been found in the tertiary relict forest of oriental beech with undergrowth of rhododendron (Strandzha Mountain) and in the century- old sweet chestnut forest (Belasitsa Mountain). The lowest values of diversity and evenness have been found in the beech forest sites in Strandzha and the Rhodopes due to the prevalence of the Aptinus species. This low diversity is a natural condition for the studied sites. The classification of the ground beetles complexes from the studied sites by similarity indices and TWINSPAN has been made. A high level of dissimilarity among the sites has been found, showing unique species composition and abundance models in each site. Carabid beetles taxocoenoses in the forests of Strandzha Mountain have shown a low similarity level by species composition and abundance even in the range of the same mountain. Indicator species have been shown. The ordination of the carabid complexes has showed that the sites have been distributed continuously along two significant gradients. -

Na druhé stran však dochází sou asn k jejímu ochuzování v souvislosti s rozvojem lidské spole nosti. Z pohledu ochrany p írody se proto horské ekosystémy adí mezi jedno z nejcenn jších a nejohrožen jších prost edí v globálním m ítku. V rámci p edložené doktorské práce byly studovány vybrané potenciáln významné antropické vlivy na biodiverzitu horských bezlesí Hrubého Jeseníku prost ednictvím modelové bioindika ní skupiny brouk (Coleoptera). V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Studium vlivu lyža ského areálu prokázalo, že p estože jsou sjezdové trat v alpínské zón zájmového území provozovány zp sobem šetrným k vegetaci, tak pr kazn m ní pvodní spole enstva epigeických brouk . -

POPOV National Museum of Natural History, Blvd Tsar Osvoboditel 1, BG-1000 Sofia, Bulgaria E-mail: [email protected] Specimens of Nemoptera sinuata were reared from eggs to second instar larvae in captivity, and observations on imagos were carried out in the Struma Valley, Bulgaria. The adults occur in open sunny places in river gorges and feed only on pollen. They are most active at noon be- tween the middle of May and the end of June. The males occur one week earlier than the fe- males. The eggs are laid directly on the ground, most often in the morning. They are spherical (rare among Neuroptera), white, opaque, with one micropyle. Up to 70 eggs are laid by a fe- male over a period of 10 days. The egg stage usually lasts from 23 to 25 days. The lid is cut off by an eggbreaker during hatching. The newly hatched larvae are 2.0–2.1 mm long, are terricolous and always buried themselves by digging to 1 cm in depth. The larvae rejected liv- ing or freshly killed arthropods, or roots and blossoms of plants. They were only observed to take water and vegetable sap. The longest surviving larva moulted in September (first instar lasts 72 days) and hibernated. It increased in length to5 mm and died in April after being reared for nine months.
