Tour Report France - The Vercors

Tour Participants: Paul Harmes & Pete Stevens (leaders) and 14 Naturetrek clients.

Day 1 Sunday 20th May

London to Lyon St. Exupery – La Chapelle en Vercors Twelve group members met with Paul and Pete at Lyon St. Exupery Airport, after catching flight BA362 from London Heathrow, Terminal 3. After completing immigration formalities and collecting our luggage, we made our way to the car park, where our vehicles were waiting. With luggage loaded, we set off travelling towards Grenoble, on the A43 and A48 motorways. Along the way we saw Black Kite.

Continuing down the A48, we left the motorway just north of Grenoble, joining the A49 Valence motorway, making a short comfort stop, before leaving at junction 9, and making our way up onto the Vercors Plateau at Pont-en-Royans and the spectacular Petit Goulets and Grand Goulets, where we turned south to La Chapelle en Vercors and the Hotel Bellier, our base for the week. Here we met with John and Judith, our last two group members, who had made their own way to the hotel. Sandra, our host, soon settled everyone into their rooms, before we met up for dinner. During the meal, Paul and Pete outlined the week ahead and the hotel logistics, before it was time to retire for the night.

Day 2 Monday 21st May

Col de la Machine - Route Combe Laval - St. Jean en Royans - Font d’Urle We started the day by recording Common and Black Redstart, Common Swift and House Martin from the hotel grounds, before making our way to the Col de la Machine, crossing the Col de Carri and passing through mixed woodland. Our first stop was at this magnificent viewpoint overlooking the spectacular Combe Laval. Here we found Gentiana clusii (Clusius’ Gentian), Lamium garganicum (Large Red Dead-nettle), Amelanchier ovalis (Juneberry), Narcissus poeticus (Pheasant’s-eye Daffodil) and Hornungia petraea (Hutchinsia). For the birds, there were Crag Martins and House Martins wheeling around the cliffs, and we also had an extremely fortuitous glimpse of a Wallcreeper.

We now continued along the precipitous Route Combe Laval and on down to St. Jean en Royans, where we visited the hypermarket to do the week’s picnic shopping. Along the way we noted three Honey Buzzards. Whilst our leaders were shopping, we explored a small, rough field, sometimes used to graze horses. Here we found Mazarine Blue, Glanville Fritillary, Large Copper, Wood White, Oberthur’s Grizzled Skipper, Heath Fritillary and Common Blue . Blackcap was heard, and a pair of Hobbies and White Wagtail were seen, before we set off to retrace our steps towards the viewpoint at the Col de la Machine.

We made a brief stop on a verge above St. Jean to admire some fine specimens of Orchis purpurea (Lady Orchid), Ophrys insectifera ( Orchid) and Cephalanthera longifolia (Sword-leaved Helleborine). We also saw Scarce Swallowtail, Black-veined White and Orange Tip, before making our way to Lente, where Pete and Paul set up our picnic.

We took lunch at the edge of the Forêt de Lente, where Chiffchaff, Goldcrest and Wren were all heard. Around our feet were Viola tricolor subsp. subalpina (Alpine Heartsease), the yellow form of Dactylorhiza sambucina (Elder-

flowered Orchid) and, in an adjacent wood, Cardamine pentaphyllos (Five-leaflet Bitter-cress) and Cardamine heptaphylla (Seven-leaflet Bittercress).

From here, we made the short journey to the Font d’Urle, an area of open limestone crags and meadows used for skiing in winter. We began by exploring a bank beside the approach road. Here we found the last few remains of Soldanella alpina (Alpine Snowbell), and the adjacent slope had Erythronium dens-canis (Dog’s-tooth Violet), Viola calcarata (Long-spurred Pansy), Gentiana verna (Spring Gentian) and Geum montanum (Alpine Avens). Moving on, a number of Alpine Choughs were circling above us, and we had distant views of Water Pipit, female Northern Wheatear, Linnet and Black Redstart. We also had several sightings of Alpine Marmot, and there was evidence of the winter tunnels of Snow Vole. As we progressed, we added Narcissus pseudonarcissus (Wild Daffodil), Narcissus poeticus (Pheasant’s-eye Daffodil), Draba aizoides (Yellow Whitlow-grass), Ranunculus amplexicaule (Amplexicaule Buttercup), both colour forms of Dactylorhiza sambucina (Elder-flowered Orchid), Crocus caeruleus (White Crocus) and Saxifraga exarata subsp. delphinensis (a Musky Saxifrage), before we returned to the vehicle.

It was now time to return to La Chapelle, for dinner.

We also recorded Little Blue, Berger’s Clouded Yellow and Spotted Fritillary butterflies. In addition, we saw an Aesculapian Snake and the curious Ascalaphid, an Ant-lion relative.

We now continued south through Pain de Baix towards Beaufort sur Gervanne where we turned west towards Gigors. Along the way, we saw Red-backed Shrike. We parked in an area of open, scrubby pasture with marginal woodland. Astragalus monspessulanus (Montpelier Vetch). Two day-flying moths were also noted: Feathered Footman and Mother Shipton.

From here we moved back towards Leoncel and up to the Col de la Bataille, and back to La Chapelle to the hotel.

Day 4 Wednesday 24th May

Gorges de la Bourne - Les Merciers – Les Bruyeres Today we made our way up to the northern end of the Vercors Plateau. Our main objective was to try to find a Wallcreeper, but we found interesting things en route, as well. Leaving La Chapelle, we drove north to the village of St Martin en Vercors, where we then turned right and continued up through Herbouilly, stopping at the deserted village of Valchevrière. This village is the location of another significant battle between the Resistance and Germans, in the Second World War. Rosa glauca (a Blue Rose), Lonicera xylosteum (Fly Honeysuckle), Sambucus racemosus (Red-berried Elder) and Cardamine pentaphyllos (Five-leaflet Bitter-cress) were recorded here.

We now moved on to a point just north of Lans en Vercors, to the hamlet of St. Merciers. Parking, we set off to explore. Among the plants, we found Saxifraga paniculata (Live-long Saxifrage), Anthyllis montana (Mountain Kidney-vetch), Dactylorhiza sambucina (Elder-flowered Orchid), in the yellow colour form, Ranunculus aconitifolius (Aconite-leaved Buttercup) and the of Gentiana cruciata (Cross Gentian). We searched the cliff walls and crags but were not able to find a Wallcreeper. However, we did see Black Redstart, Jackdaw, Common Buzzard and Song Thrush. Cuckoo, Chiffchaff and Robin were also heard.

Our picnic was taken in the Gorges du Furon, by the River Bourne. During the meal, Grey Wagtail and Dipper were both recorded, together with Burnet Companion . After eating, we looked at the riverside woodland margins, finding Chrysosplenium alternifolium (Alternate-leaved Golden Saxifrage), Viburnum lantana (Wayfaring ), Stellaria nemorum (Wood Stitchwort) and Luzula nivea (Snowy Wood-rush).

The early afternoon was spent in the damp hay meadows of Les Bruyeres where we found Tephroseris helenitis (Swiss Ragwort), Valeriana dioica (Marsh Valerian), Trollius europaeus (Globeflower) and Dactylorhiza majalis (Broad- leaved Marsh Orchid). A small pond produced a good number of Rana kl. esculenta ( Edible Frog), and we also added the song of a newly arrived Marsh Warbler.

To complete a circular route, we made our return to La Chapelle by taking the road through the spectacular Gorges de la Bourne, stopping at the Pont Vachevrière. Crag Martin, House Martin and Robin were recorded, as well as Saxifraga rotundifolia (Round-leaved Saxifrage), Cephalanthera longifolia (Sword-leaved Helleborine), Valeriana tripteris (Three-leaved Valerian) and Pinguicula grandiflora (Greater Butterwort). As we continued south through the gorge, we passed several stands of Lunaria redivida (Perennial Honesty).

Our final stop of the day was a verge bank and meadow at La Chabertière. Orchis simia (Monkey Orchid), Orchis anthropophora (Man Orchid), Veronica chamaedrys (Germander Speedwell), Ophrys insectifera (Fly Orchid) and Ophrys fuciflora subsp. fuciflora (Late Spider Orchid) were all found, as well as Sooty Copper and Small Heath butterflies. Day 5 Thursday 25th May

Reserve Naturelle.des Hauts Plateaux du Vercors Soon after breakfast, we left La Chapelle and made our way down to St Agnan, where a brief stop in a meadow produced Mazarine Blue and Meadow Brown butterflies. We then moved up to the Hauts Plateux, parking at the car park at La Coche, where we prepared for our morning walk. Along the way, we stopped to admire the views up the valley. Whilst by the viewpoint we saw Paris quadrifolia (Herb-Paris), Carex ornithopoda (Bird’s-foot Sedge) and Cystopteris fragilis (Brittle Bladder-fern). Coal Tits were also active.

Leaving La Coche, we began exploring the mixed coniferous and woodland and found that Abies alba (Silver Fir) and Picea abies (Norway Spruce) and Fagus sylvatica (Beech) were the predominant . Soon after we had left the car park, we came across Firecrest and more Coal Tits, and Paul found Soldanella alpina (Alpine Snowbell) and Orchis mascula subsp. speciosa (an Early Purple Orchid). We soon added calling Dunnock, Robin and a distant Song Thrush. Continuing along the path, we added Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Bearberry) and Viola tricolor subsp. subalpina (Alpine Heartsease). As we were arriving at the open plateau, we had some very brief views of Alpine Marmot, Short-tailed Snake Eagle and distant Griffon Vulture. As we progressed, a few Crocus caeruleus (White Crocus) were seen, as well as Daphne cneorum (Garland ), Tulipa sylvestris subsp. sylvestris (Wild Tulip), Pinus uncinata (Mountain Pine) and Narcissus pseudonarcissus (Wild Daffodil). As we went we found Anemone alpina (Alpine Pasqueflower), which we stopped to photograph.

Before rejoining the main road, we stopped to look at a verge bank near Les Meunières, which had a good number of Orchis anthropophora (Man Orchid) and Ophrys insectifera (Fly Orchid).

Day 6 Friday 26th May

Col de Rousset – Above Les Nonnières – Vallon de Combeau – Cirque d’Archiane Our first stop today was at the head of the spectacular Col de Rousset – there are truly magnificent views from here. A few distant Griffon Vultures were seen, as well as Rock Bunting, Black Redstart and Alpine Swift. Anthyllis montana (Mountain Kidney-vetch) and absinthium (Wormwood) were also recorded.

Moving on, we made our way to the bottom of the valley and turned east through the town of Die and on through Pont de Quart and Châtillon en Diois. Retracing our route, we turned up into the Vallon de Combeau. Here we made our way up the valley and parked by a ford in the mountain stream, where we set up the picnic. A Short-toed Snake Eagle was seen soaring in the distance, and Alpine Chamois was spotted on a far crag. Brimstone, Southern Grizzled Skipper and Scarce Swallowtail were also seen. In a nearby ditch there was Pinguicula grandiflora (Large-flowered Butterwort) and close by, there was Euphorbia cyparissias (Cypress Spurge), Pinus uncinata (Mountain Pine), Meum athamanticum (Spignel) and Gentiana angustifolia (Narrow-leaved Gentian). We now moved down the valley and parked in a layby, to search a verge bank for orchids. Here we found Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (Bearberry), Orchis pallens (Pale Orchid) and Orchis spitzelii (Spitzel’s Orchid), which has a restricted distribution. There was more of this in the adjacent forest.

The group now took a little time descending the valley on foot, enjoying the wildlife and the spectacular views, before rejoining the vehicle, in order that we could move south to the Cirque d’Archiane. We parked in a layby, south east of the hamlet of Archiane. Griffon Vultures were seen high on the ridges, and plants included Aphyllanthes monspeliensis (Blue Aphyllanthes), Globularia cordifolia (Matted Globularia), Globularia punctata (Common Globularia) and Lavandula officinalis (Lavender). Scarce Swallowtail and Orange Tip butterflies were also added.

We now began our journey back to La Chapelle, stopping to have refreshments outside Die.
