A search of both print and electronic sources of information identified five pests of quarantine significance that exist in Hawaii and could be introduced into the continental United States in shipments of fresh dragon fruit. Quarantine-significant pests likely to follow the pathway: Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae) Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) Dysmicoccus neobrevipes (Beardsley) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) Pseudococcus cryptus Hempel (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) The quarantine pests were analyzed based on international principles and internal guidelines as described in the PPQ Guidelines for Pathway-Initiated Pest Risk Assessments, Version 5.02 (USDA, 2005a). This document examined pest biology in the context of the Consequences and Likelihood of Introduction. The pests that are likely to follow the pathway pose phytosanitary risks to U.S. agriculture. The two fruit flies, Bactrocera dorsalis and Ceratitis capitata, have a High Pest Risk Potential. The three Homopterans, Dysmicoccus neobrevipes, Maconellicoccus hirsutus, and Pseudococcus cryptus, received a Pest Risk Potential of Medium. -

This document has been prepared by Mr James Grogan under contract with the CITES Secretariat.1 2. Background information can be found in two key CITES documents: CoP15 Doc. 55, submitted by the Management Authority of Switzerland, describes the issue under consideration in this report, whether certain genera of epiphytic cacti (seven as listed below) should be excluded from Appendix II based on the preponderance of artificially propagated compared to wild- collected specimens in international trade; IUCN Red List conservation status is reviewed, and trade data for gross exports of wild-collected specimens from range nations during 1975–2008 are presented; PC19 Doc. 14.1, prepared by the Chair of the Working Group on the Periodic Review with assistance from the Scientific Authority of Mexico, presents further analysis of trade data during 1998–2008 including the number of specimens of epiphytic cacti in trade that were artificially propagated, number of records and specimens that were wild collected, confiscated or seized, or of unknown origin during this period, and geographic ranges of species in question. The Cactaceae are a New World family except for one species, the epiphytic Rhipsalis baccifera, which is also found in Africa, Madagascar and as far east as Sri Lanka. It’s an in-between number so we weren’t going to go all out with celebrations. Then we realized that there was no guarantee 45 years ago that we’d still be here—let alone have developed our range of programs and skills. So we decided that a little horn tooting was in order. Our founders had a vision: an organization that would focus on preservation and have technical skills that could actually help people fix their buildings. -

Dragon fruit is the fifth most imported tropical fruit from Asia exported to China. China imported 533 MT in 2017. Mostly white fleshed fruit from Vietnam US consumers mainly Asian and Latin Americans, sales until now mainly in specialty stores and at farmers markets. -

RESTORATION OF THE CONSERVATORY GARDEN Celebrating 35 Years of the Women’s Committee THE CONSERVATORY GARDEN | A Women’s Garden In honor of their 35th Anniversary and in collaboration with Central Park Conservancy’s Campaign, Forever Green: Ensuring the Future of Central Park, the Women’s Committee of Central Park Conservancy has committed to raise at least $5 million towards a transformative $10 million initiative to restore the Conservatory Garden, Central Park’s six-acre masterwork of formal garden design, located off Fifth Avenue from 104th to 106th Streets. History Completed in 1937 under Parks Commissioner Robert Moses’ chief landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke, the Conservatory Garden became Central Park’s only formal garden. The original plans were designed by aptly-named landscape architect M. Betty Sprout, who later became Clarke’s wife. In the latter part of the 19th century, the area originally hosted a small nursery for growing plants for the Park. The name “Conservatory Garden” was adopted in 1898 when a large conservatory (greenhouse) was constructed on the site, featuring then-exotic tropical plants and ornate flower beds. After falling into disrepair, the greenhouse was demolished in 1934 and the exceptional six-acre formal outdoor garden that we now know was conceived and built. Thanks to its original designers and the Conservancy’s substantial 1983 restoration of the Garden’s horticultural elements, the Garden stands as one of the world’s great masterworks of formal garden design. Since its earliest days, horticultural direction has been in the hands of women, including Lynden Miller, who led the 1983 restoration, and long-time Garden curator Diane Schaub. -
Organic Cultivation of Two Species of Pitahaya (Selenicereus Undatus and Selenicereus Megalanthus) in the Southeast of Mexico
Horticulture International Journal Research Article Open Access Organic cultivation of two species of pitahaya (Selenicereus undatus and Selenicereus megalanthus) in the Southeast of Mexico Abstract Volume 5 Issue 1 - 2021 Both species of Pithaya Selenicereus undatus and Selenicereus megalanthus, were Mendoza - Barrera Victor M,1 Ortega - established on the 25th of May and the 26th of June, 2019. Three hundred and forty-four Ramirez Marynor E,2 Galán - Jímenez, Miguel cuttings were planted. The seedlings used were 30cm long, previously rooted at the ranch Á,1 Burelo - Ramos Carlos M,3 Campos - for three months with vegetable soil and worm-compost in a protective cultivation system 3 using horticulture shadowed cloth with 70% sunlight penetration. Improving Pitaya Production and Marketing THIRTY-ONE YEARS OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE VINE CACTI PITAYA IN ISRAEL Yosef Mizrahi Department of Life Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Beer-Sheva, 8441901, Israel E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Taxonomy: The vine cacti have three genera and many species in each one of them. The genera are: Hylocereus, Selenicereus and Epiphyllum. Only Selenicereus megalanthus combine characteristics of the first two genera. Genetics and breeding: Selenicereus megalanthus is tetraploids (4n) while all others are diploids (2n). We obtained inter-clonal, interspecies, and intergeneric hybrids with much improved characteristics, to the point that today we have new excellent hybrids which can provide fruits from July to May. Physiology: All plants are of the CAM (crassulacean acid metabolism) photosynthetic pathway; hence use 10% of water other plants are using in the same environment. CO2 enrichment increases both the vegetative and reproductive productions. Nitrogen fertilization should accompany the CO2 enrichment to get maximum efficiency. Stomata were found on the fruit surface functioning through the CAM pathway. Stomatal density is much higher on the fruit scale than on the fruit surface. Cytokinins induces and gibberelliic acid (GA3) delays flowering. Scale shrinking is the major reason to shorten the shelf life. Root system is very shallow maximum depth, 40cm. Uses: There are more uses to the plants parts other than the fruit, such as fruit pigments as coloring agents, edible flowers and more.
