Plugged In Issue One • the official school newspaper of Speedway Senior High School • September 10, 2010 “The streak ends here” ... AND NOW Sparkplugs battle Raiders Saturday in renewal of rivalry at Lucas Oil Stadium

FIERCE 2010 graduate Nathan Stockhoff’s face displayed the intensity of the Ritter- Speedway rivalry.

WORLD FAMOUS FANS Speedway students were loud and loyal at last year’s Ritter game held at Marian University. What do you think of when you hear playing them at Lucas Oil Stadium. Bin Laden proclaimed it a Remembering 9/11 black day for America On September 11th, 2001 terrorists invaded our country. They overtook two planes with about 3,000 passengers and flew them straight into the Twin Towers. This is the most tragic affair in history to happen on American soil. Nearly nine years later, the new Twin Towers site is in early development and a proposed plan for a mosque (two blocks north of the site) is in progress. The mosque is also a part of an Islamic cultural center and is projected to be thirteen stories high. The building is scheduled to include a swimming pool and gym. According to the NY Daily News, “No one at last night’s meeting protested the project. But some 9/11 families said they found the proposal offensive because the terrorists who launched the attack were Muslim.” On DNAinfo.com (website of Manhattan local news) they quoted Jahanara Nares, “They shouldn’t discriminate against us just because Osama bin Ladin was Muslim. That’s just a fact about him- like if he had black hair and they were to discriminate people with black hair.” In an article posted on CNN, President Obama said he believes… “that the Muslims should be allowed to build the mosque just as any other religious person should be allowed to practice their own beliefs.” Most people think all Muslims are bad people just because the terrorists who attacked us were Muslim too. Now what if the terrorists happened to be American? Would we discriminate against our own selves? I think that one bad person should not reflect upon the whole group to be just like that person. The real question however, is why there? Some feel that it symbolizes a sort of peace offering. Others think it’s just a way of spitting on the ground where Hanna innocent lives were taken. I feel that the Muslims Vongpraseuth should be allowed to build the mosque at a different Plugged In location. Having that mosque near the Twin Towers site Features would bring up more emotions for the families that lost Reporter their loved ones than it already has. Though denying them to build the mosque there should not discourage them from building it elsewhere in New York. 2 Opinion Getting involved at Speedway It’s a lot easier than you might think If you are interested in community Club meeting is next Wednesday. service, leadership development, and These are great opportunities to get having fun during school, then you information that you need if you’re have to get involved in school. The large screen behind the stage flashed the images of the top ten contestants allowing fans to cheer for their favorites. It was all so loud and showy that for a second, I felt as though I was on a ride at Disneyland. Then, the show really began. It was set up like a countdown, with Didi Benami performing first and winner Lee DeWyze performing last. They each performed one or two songs from the show, and then usually at least one other song of their choosing. Every contestant mentioned that it was their last show on the tour, that they were personally extremely thankful, and no one failed to ask us to “Give it up for the band.” Obviously, some sounded better than others, but as far as who was best, well, that depends who you ask.
