FOREWORD This study on "DEFENDING THE KING JAMES BIBLE—A Fourfold Supe- riority—God's Words Kept Intact In English" is the product of over twenty-eight years of the author's thinking, researching, writing, publishing, and speaking on this most important theme. There is no more important subject in all the Christian Faith than the BIBLE. One vital question is: Which English Bible are we to read, study, memorize, preach from, and use today? A second important question is: Which English Bible can we hold in our hands and say with great confidence, "These are the WORDS OF GOD in English"? It has been the purpose of this study to answer BOTH of the above questions by pointing to THE KING JAMES BIBLE, proving its superiority in four areas: (1) its superior TEXTS; (2) its superior TRANSLATORS; (3) its superior TECHNIQUES; and (4) its superior THEOLOGY. In all FOUR of these areas, the KING JAMES BIBLE has no equal! The study is to be viewed as a suggestive outline of this theme rather than being in any sense exhaustive. There is really no end to this important discussion, due to the almost inexhaustible information available on it. Throughout the book, we have cited many helpful volumes for further study. We have also included (at the end of this book) a Bibliography which, at the time of publication, consisted of over 900 titles. This Bibliography lists books, tapes, videos, and other valuable materials on this theme which the reader might want to secure for his own library. More titles are being added monthly. For the latest up-to-date list of materials, we suggest you write THE BIBLE FOR TODAY and request BROCHURE #1. Though much has been added to this present volume, the bulk of materi- al contained was delivered at a seminar on the KING JAMES BIBLE given at GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH, Cortland, New York, on February 13 and 14, 1988. The original seminar is available in both five, two-hour audio cassettes and/or two video cassettes. (BFT #1594/1-5) To the original three chapters have been added CHAPTER V, APPENDICES A and B, the INDEX, and the ADDITIONAL REFERENCES. APPENDIX C con- tains thirty-nine questions and answers that were asked during the original semi- nars. We hope that the answers to these questions which pertain to the defense of the KING JAMES BIBLE might be helpful to the readers. See p. xxxi for the THIRD EDITION’s important changes. THE N.T. To get a picture of just how many Words are involved (if they were together in one place) consider what 10,000 English words would amount to. It would be the equivalent of either: (1) the entire book of Romans (9,447 words); or (2) the entire book of 1 Corinthians (9,489 words); or (3) the books of 2 Corinthians and Galatians (9,190 words); or (4) the books of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and 1 Thessalonians (9,096 words); or (5) the books of James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, and Jude (10,088 words); or (6) the books of Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 2 Timothy, Philemon, 2 Peter, 2 John, 3 John, and Jude (9,819 words). This represents the total number of Received Text Greek Words that have ei- ther been added to God's Words, subtracted from God's Words, or changed from God's Words by the Westcott and Hort Greek text.     Tender Mercies in English Scriptural Idiom and in Nephi’s Record Miranda Wilcox Nephi records divine beings inviting humans to participate in the sacred story of salvation and humans petitioning divine beings for aid in their mortal affliction. The first chapter of Nephi’s story introduces linguistic, textual, and narrative questions about how humans should engage with and produce holy books that memorialize these divine- human relations in heaven and on earth. For Nephi, a central element of these relationships is “tender mercies” (1 Nephi 1:20). What are tender mercies? How do the Lord’s tender mercies make the chosen faithful “mighty, even unto the power of deliverance”? Nephi’s striking phrase has become popular in Latter-day Saint discourse since Elder David A. Bednar preached of the “tender mercies of the Lord” at general conference in April 2005. He defined tender mercies as “very personal and individualized blessings, strength, pro- tection, assurances, guidance, loving-kindnesses, consolation, support, and spiritual gifts which we receive from and because of and through the Lord Jesus Christ.”1 I would like to extend this discussion and reconsider this definition with respect to Nephi’s record by explor- ing the biblical sources and the transmission of this beloved phrase through English scriptural idiom. 1. After outlining the myth and illustrating that many Americans of all backgrounds had subscribed to this belief by the early 1990s, the project challenges the narrative of black homophobia by highlighting black urban neighborhoods in the first half of the twentieth century that permitted and even occasionally celebrated open displays of queerness. By the 1960s, however, the black communities that had hosted overt queerness were no longer recognizable, as the public balls, private parties, and other spaces where same-sex contacts took place were driven underground. This shift resulted from the rise of the black Civil Rights Movement, whose middle-class leadership – often comprised of ministers from the black church – rigorously promoted the respectability of the race.
