It’s been a month since we played at Hutt Park. A tough away encounter at Wests, a Chatham Cup game in the polar wind tunnel at Wakefield Park against Island Bay and then another night game in freezing conditions against Lower Hutt at Fraser. Well it’s nice to be home and playing during the daytime — on grass! Season two back in Central League has seen an improved start to the campaign. In fact our last home defeat was close to a year ago on the 13th June 2015 against you guessed it — Napier City Rovers. This season has seen a host of yellows and reds being handed out—something like 8 reds in all games we’ve been involved in already! And that seems to be consistent with our Central and Capital Premier colleagues with a host of games being impacted in this way.

It’s been a promising start for pretty much all teams in 2014. Sure it’s early days but there’s a nice positive vibe around the club. The Prems signaled their intentions with a good start against Miramar but a hiccup at a windswept and very uninviting Karori Park saw us suffer a 1-2 loss. Refreshing to be back at Hutt Park with a game against the vastly different Island Bay side from the Ole inspired teams of the last couple of seasons. They haven’t had the best start but to be fair have come up against two of the league favourites. And Island Bay are a big club with huge player depth so today will be a massive challenge! Our 2nd team are unbeaten and also come up against Island Bay today on #2. The 3rds have also had a good start to their season with two from two.

At the blink of an eye the season is all but over! But for both sides today the season has not petered into insignificance. Olympic of course have the chance to win the title and we’re continuing to push for a higher finishing spot in the league. After knocking off Napier at Park Island last time out, there’s plenty of determination in the squad to keep improving and sorry Olympic supporters we won’t go down without a fight. One look at the table shows the gulf between the top 5 teams and the rest so today’s match could go either way. Expect a high energy match. It’s been another impressive season to go with our fourth place finish last year in our return to Central League.

2 0 2 1 Powerex Tournament for the Hilton-Petone Cup Tournament proudly sponsored by Electrical - Data - Security - Heat Pumps www.powerex.nz (04) 891-0154 73 Sydney Street, Petone Welcome elcome to the 2021 Powerex Tournament for the Hilton-Petone Cup. WThe tournament is well supported again this year with 12 teams in Division 1 and 19 teams in Division 2 – nine more teams than the 2019 tournament. This is the 67th year as Wellington’s preseason tournament for local men’s teams and is a great way to put into action what teams have been practicing in a competitive situation. A great preparation for the season ahead. Thanks to Capital Football’s referees for supporting the tournament again, a great way for them to prepare for the season ahead as well. The 2020 tournament was interrupted by COVID restrictions, so we were unable to play the Division 2 final. However, we were able to play the Division 1 final and reigning champions Tawa are back to defend their title. I’m sure there will be some fierce competition, but fair play will be on the top of everyone’s mind as well as injury prevention and building fitness to be ready to compete strongly in the season ahead. Thank you to Upper Hutt for managing the games at Maidstone Park again this year and to all of the volunteers who will be helping on game days, we really appreciate your support in doing this for us. Thanks to Barry Pickering for organising the tournament again – a huge job co-ordinating 31 teams, pitches, draws and officials etc.

  • MATCH DAY PROGRAM 3Rd / 5Th June 2017
MATCH DAY PROGRAM 3rd / 5th June 2017 Photo courtesy of AT Photo UPPER HUTT CITY VS PETONE SATURDAY 3:00 UPPER HUTT CITY VS TAWA MONDAY 2:00 A message from Mark . Crikey – where do I start, last week we played Western Suburbs reserves in what turned out to be a game for the spectators. Plenty of goals, some great attacking play and some sloppy defending from both sides and to top it all off a bit of feisty ness towards the end. Our defence has been one of our strongest parts of our game this year and for one reason or another it let us down and we conceded a whopping 5 goals. This is no means a criticism of the back 4 alone as I have always said we start defending from the front and work our way back from there. Hopefully this was just a blip on the radar and we can get back to our miserly best over the weekend. In saying that though there were plenty of positives as well, we scored 4 great goals and it could have been more. The spirit the team showed to come back 3 times and nearly a 4th when we hit the cross bar in the 97th minute. This weekend will certainly test the squad as today we welcome Paul, and the undefeated (on the field) Petone side and their supporters. Paul has certainly got a talented squad and has got them playing very well. Having spent ten years at Petone, I know how hard they work at getting things right both on and off the field and know they will be hurting from last year’s performance.
