Club History Our earliest records date back to the season 1913/14 when Codicote joined the Hertfordshire County League Eastern division, where we remained until the league was reorganised in 1921 moving Codicote into the North & East division. In 1923 the league was reduced to a single league and at the end of 1924/25 season the Herts League was disbanded.

The league reformed once again but only for one season in 1926/27 before disbanding again. Codicote then joined the North Herts League and remained there until 1993 when the present Chairman Jim Bundy and then Manager took Codicote once again back into the Herts Senior County League.

At the end of 2009 after promotion to the Herts Premier League (03) and winning the Herts Centenary Trophy (06) Jim moved upstairs and handed the reins over, with the aim to progress the side into the Spartan .

The Club invested in two ground sharing agreements firstly 2 seasons at Hertford Town and a further 3 seasons at Gosling Sports Park enabling the Club to achieve the facilities required by Step 6 clubs. Subsequent Managers Dan Kennoy (ex Bedford Town) and Adam Fisher (now Hertford Town) just failed in getting the club promoted but in 2011/12 under the management of Liam Errington and Jim Mullen the Club finally saw the team achieve promotion to their current position in the .

The club extending the ground share at Gosling and in the Clubs first season in the Spartan South Midlands League they reach the Challenge Cup Final and virtue of their League position gained entry into the Herts Charity Cup and the FA Cup. 2013/14-15 Liam remained in charge once again pushing the Club toward those Promotion spots. In 2014/15 Jim Mullen left the Club and was replaced by Keith Coughlin as joint manager of the 1st Team from Southern League side Arlesey Town and the Club moved the Reserves side from the Herts County League into the Spartan South Midlands League for one season.

Liam retired from management at the end of 2015 and the Club brought in Steve Young, Hendy Manning and Roy Ryall (ex Stotfold) to join Keith. In October Keith left the Club after a poor start leaving the Ex Stotfold boys in full charge. The club pulled itself away from relegation into a top 10 position whilst reaching the Challenge Cup semi-final. The club made the final steps in moving back to the village with £110K ground improvements with new floodlights and a new spectators’ stand all in keeping with the £500,000 new Club house for the 2016/17 season. The first season back was a major success off the field and we increased our home support by over 70% unfortunately on the park we failed to achieve what we were capable of and work commitments meant an end to the reign of Youngie, Hendy and Roy but not before coach James Tizard had joined the Club.

Codicote were then delighted to introduce the management of James Tizard and ex Watford, Burnley and Stoke pro, Gifton Noel-Williams for 2017/18. Gifton, a UEFA A coach, will look to blend those current players with an influx of new talent whilst also overseeing the development of the Youth coaches at Codicote.

The team were soon joined by Jimmy Martin a UEFA B coach from Stevenage FC who will manage Codicote’s new U18 side in the Southern Counties Floodlit League giving those players a direct link into first team football. James Tizard left to rekindle his playing career so the club introduced Tony Armitage as 1st Team assistant to Gifton, Tony has a wealth of experience at this level and above and has previously been with Codicote FC.

At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, Codicote saw new management come into the club as Elliot Smith, joined by James Smithson.

In March of 2019, James Tizard was appointed as caretaker manager as Codicote FC look to regroup and try to climb away from the relegation spots. Spartan South Midlands League – Division 1

Codicote FC U18s, working with Stevenage FC Elite Development Programme, play in the Olympian Division of the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. Follow the Codicote FC Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CodicoteFCOfficial) to keep up with the latest news.

The Elite Development Programme is a two-year scholarship for boys aged 16-19 years old, during which they study for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport, the equivalent of 3 A-Levels.

Many of the U18 players have been seen on a Saturday too having moved up to the senior team. Theft of our floodlight winch Last month we discovered that the winching gear used to lower and raise our floodlights had been stolen.

The John Clements is a multi-use sports facility that enables both youngsters and adults from the village to take part in a wide variety of sporting activities including mini rugby, youth football and – during the summer months - cricket.

We move the floodlights at the end of the football season to support the cricket team because the two pitches overlap. You may have noticed that Codicote FC don’t play any home games during September as part of this ground sharing and the two sports have always been supportive of each other but if we can’t lower the floodlights on time, it could impact on the cricket club and possibly leave us in breach of our lease agreement with Codicote Parish Council.

Today’s Visitors – Club History

After Brimsdown Rovers merged with Enfield 1893 in 2010, there was no representative Non-League football for the Brimsdown area.

In 2013, Lee Okugbeni, with help from Osbourne Powell and Peter Omondi, formed BRIMSDOWN FC to compete in the MOLTEN SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS LEAGUE using the secondary pitch on The Downs as out home pitch, after successfully running an u18s the year before.

February 2018 New management of Ahmet Toygun and Yilmaz Celik decided to take over the club, both have been in football over ten years. Ahmet Toygun has been managing and coaching his own football academy called North London Football Academy. Yilmaz has been playing football over ten years on Sundays and successfully runs his own supermarket business.

Both have bright and exciting plans for the club, mission statement is to bring the club up as high in the non-league football in 5 years’ time! Youth Football at Codicote

For the 2018-19 season, Codicote Youth FC joined the newly formed Hertfordshire Development League where the primary aim is to put the welfare and enjoyment of our young participants first.

Just like the league, we want our children to play in a safe and calm environment which allows them to make and learn from their own mistakes.

Here are a few words from Bethan, a Codicote player in her 3rd season with the club.

I play for Codicote Youth Under 10 Eagles. I love being at Codicote because I can play with a team together, be friends and be serious. My team is fun, determined and positive. I love football and playing in a team. Codicote is a team with kind players that help each other and caring coaches that teach us and let us have fun. In Codicote when you are younger, we don’t have one position we change round and let everyone have a go that wants a go. That means that you can get used at playing in more than one position. It is not just Codicote I like about football. It is also the referees. They are normally kind and help us learn by letting us take a throw-in again and helping us understand what we have done wrong. Sometimes it is even harder for the referee because adults sometimes shout at them. Sometimes the adults don’t understand. Also, in any game of football a referee cannot change their decision because a parent shouts. The referees are normally young and learning just like us and we make mistakes and so do the refs.

Codicote Youth FC Codicote Youth have teams in the Hertfordshire Development League and Mid Herts Rural Minors League, representing the club in most age groups from U7 through to U18. We pride ourselves on our close links with Codicote FC and on the great community spirit the club inspires. Codicote Youth FC 2018/2019 U10s

The club traditionally recruits players from Codicote and the surrounding villages and we’re always looking for girls and boys to join our ever-growing number of teams. Many of the children start with the club at the U7 age group where they take part in friendly festivals before starting to play “league” football at U8 as they progress through to U18 where they’ll have the opportunity to train and possibly play with the senior side.

If you are interested in joining the club as a player, a coach, a volunteer or a committee member please visit our website at www.codicoteyouthfc.co.uk and leave your details in the “Contact Us” section. Player Sponsors

The John Clements Memorial Ground John Clements was born on 25 August 1953, in Codicote, Hertfordshire. A schoolmaster at Sherrardswood School, Welwyn Garden City, he was awarded the George Cross for his heroism in rescuing others from a hotel fire at the Sappada Ski Resort in Italy on 12 April 1976. Clements died in the blaze.

John Clements was one of a party of six adults and thirty-seven children who were staying at a ski-resort in Northern Italy on an eight-day visit. At about 4 a.m. on 12th April 1976, smoke was noticed, and Mr. Clements was one of those who quickly raised the alarm and ordered the children to go down-stairs. A number of children were led to safety through dense smoke by other members of the staff who, having got out of the hotel, then helped further children to escape from a first-floor balcony to the ground. Meanwhile, Mr. Clements had climbed down from a third floor balcony on the West side of the building to a second floor balcony; he then reached the first floor where he organised a number of children into small groups and assisted them to escape by means of a rope he had improvised from knotted sheets. When the room was evacuated Mr. Clements refused to leave the hotel and went back into the building which in a matter of minutes was burning fiercely. He was seen on at least two occasions to go back into the hotel after carrying or dragging people out, and he ignored repeated attempts to restrain him. Mr. Clement was finally overcome by fumes and he died in the fire. Mr. Clements displayed outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty in circumstances of extreme danger. He showed no regard for his personal safety when he remained in the fiercely burning hotel in his endeavours to save those still trapped by the fire. Official Club Partners
