What is compage region?

Derwent Whittlesey, the famous political geographer introduced the concept of compage region. He was of the perspective, that if we combine some parts together, it will become a whole new area. For example, the states and union territories all together form a country.

A combination of few countries becomes a continent. And so on. So compage region can be defined as regional geography or a huge part of the area made by many small structures or in other words, a combination of many parts into a functional whole.

What do you mean by a nodal region?

A functional region, also known as a nodal region, is a region organized around a node or focal point. The region is tied to the central point by transportation, communication systems or by economic or functional associations.

What is a nodal point?

Nodal point is the central meeting point of all transport linkages as in the above map.

Define ad-hoc regions with examples?

The dictionary meaning of ‘ad hoc’ is to adopt or do something for particular purpose. Ad hoc plans may be made and implemented for a particular purpose, possibly to overcome some pressing and unforeseen problem. Hence they are expected to be short term in nature (e.g. plans to combat spread of diseases like dengue in selected areas, sealing of areas to stop COVID-19 infection among masses, e.g. , , etc. construction of local embankments, wells or tube wells according to necessity etc.). In India “ad hoc’ planning has featured substantially in the planning process to meet emergency requirements, a fact often criticized by the policy makers and planners.

What is meant by regional disparity?

Regional disparity means divergence or inequality of characters, phenomena or processes having specific territorial allocation and occurring at least in two entities of the territorial structure. Regional disparity refers to differences between economic performance and welfare between different regions.

What is regional imbalance?

Regional imbalance is the disparity in economic and social development of two regions. One region/city/area is stronger than another region/city/area. Regional imbalance develops when investments are made to set up industries, service sectors, educational institutions, health care facilities etc. denying other region.

What is regionalism?

In politics, regionalism is a political ideology focusing on the "development of a political or social system based on one or more" regions and/or the national, normative or economic interests of a specific region, group of regions or another sub national entity, gaining strength from or aiming to strengthen the "consciousness of and loyalty to a distinct region with a homogeneous population", similarly to nationalism. More specifically, "regionalism refers to three distinct elements:

1. Movements demanding territorial autonomy within unitary states; 2. The organization of the central state on a regional basis for the delivery of its policies including regional development policies; 3. Political decentralization and regional autonomy.
