The Day the Stars Fell – Preview All Rights Reserved A Prologue Starfall Saturday, September 23, 2034 2035 Nuuk Time Godthab, Greenland It began about 2035 Nuuk Time (US 1835 EDT) in the evening somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean. All along the eastern seaboard of two continents and the islands on that side of the world were witness to it. The larger population turning their eyes to the East to marvel at the hundreds of trails streaking through the sky. Along with those blazing trails through the skies came tremendous flashes as the meteoroids vaporized in the atmosphere. Several morphed into meteorites as they struck the Earth and ocean. It started around mid-Greenland with some the few souls that lived there looking to the East while some of them and their friends in Iceland looking West. A very few Greenlanders had to lay back their heads and look straight up. The few inhabitants of the globe that were above 70 degrees North where looking South to see it while the few inhabitants living south of 70 degrees South were looking North. The barrage of falling rocks seemed much thicker near the equator and tapering to a thin stream at either extreme with the extreme ends sort of lagging behind the center mass in a shallow “U” shape lying on its side. New Yorkers on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA and others from the top of the Arctic Circle to Tierra Del Fuego and the penguins of Antarctica saw the same spectacular display that lit the dark and darkening skies at a distance. -

Wilson, Committee Co-Chair D-L Stewart, Committee Co-Chair This study used narrative inquiry to focus on the lived experiences of undergraduate and graduate students who have experienced a significant death loss during their studies and have academically persisted in the face of adversity. The purpose of this research was to understand and describe how undergraduate and graduate students academically persist within higher education after a significant death loss. Providing this affirmative narrative illuminated the educational resilience that occurs following a death loss experience. Using educational resilience as the conceptual model and Schlossberg’s transition theory as the theoretical framework, the overarching research question that guided this study was: What are the narratives of bereaved college students who academically persist in the face of adversity? Participants included seven undergraduate and graduate students from three institutions of higher education across the United States. Participants engaged in two semi-structured interviews and an electronic journaling activity to share their death loss experience. Interviews were conducted face-to-face and virtually. Composite narratives were used to present the data from this study. The seven participants in this study were highlighted through four composite characters who met monthly at a Death Café. -

FAMILY CARE Once the occurrence of an incident/accident has been verified and there is positive confirmation of the crewmembers involved, the next of kin/emergency contacts must be notified. Due to vacations, illness, etc., it may be necessary for any of the members of the management team to be involved in the injury/death notification along with the employee designated individuals (listed in the next of kin/emergency contact form). Some things to consider involving family notification include: • Always use more than one individual, i.e., program director, chaplain, other team members along with the employee designated individual who is found on the next of kin/emergency notification form. • Determine who your notification team is going to be prior to an accident. Have back-ups. • Who should be notified? Spouse? Parents? Siblings? In-laws? Children? This should be on the next of kin notification form. • Be cognizant of the diversity of family dynamics in this situation. • Where will the notification occur? Home, work, out of state? • Be prepared for delays. • In the case of serious injuries, the most important concern is getting the family to the employee. • A Family Liaison Officer (described below) should be assigned to each injured or deceased crewmember family. • The family should learn of the injury or death before the media. Sometimes this is not possible due to the widespread use of smart phones and social media. Whenever possible, tell the family in person. • If done via the phone, the notification team should meet with the family as soon as possible. If possible, use local law enforcement personnel to physically go to the home to be present for the notification if your agency is unable due to geographical distance or urgency due to media involvement. -

Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s. -

A STUDY OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A DEATH NOTIFICATION TRAINING SEMINAR FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS by Brandon Jeremy Register (Under the direction of Alan E. Stewart) ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effectiveness of a death notification training seminar for law enforcement officers developed by Alan Stewart and Janice Harris Lord. Previous research has demonstrated that a significant portion of law enforcement officers have received little to no death notification training, yet the majority of officers have delivered at least one death notification (Stewart et al., 2000). Participants (N=307) were a mix of law enforcement officers (n=163), chaplains (n=25), victim advocates (n=32), and nine other categories of law enforcement personnel (n=87) across five states in the United States. Results of pre and post measures indicated that the seminar was viewed to be effective overall; that it enhanced the death notification skills of participants; that it increased their confidence in performing a compassionate and thorough death notification; and that participants generally felt prepared to handle circumstances which commonly surround death notification after attending the seminar. Differences in reported death notification experiences were analyzed by gender and professional identification. Males reported performing significantly more death notifications than females, and significant differences were found between Officers, Chaplains, and Victim Advocates on several measures of emotional response during death notifications. 12 CEMETERY SUPERSTITIONS By Cathy Wallace, Cemetery superstitions from the last century or two may have more influence over how you behave when it comes to family funerals and burials than you might realize. Have you ever worn black to a funeral? Did you travel from a funeral home to the cemetery in an unbroken procession of cars? Have you ever sent flowers to the family of the deceased? Why did you do those things? Tradition? Where did those traditions come from? Many of them came from century-old cemetery superstitions. Cemetery Superstitions #1: Wearing Black The custom of wearing black at funerals is an ancient one, but it became more popular during the Victorian era. Black was believed to make the living less visible to the spirits that came to accompany the deceased into the afterlife. After all, they didn’t want the spirits to make any mistakes and take them along too! If a family could not afford black clothing, it was acceptable to wear a black armband. Widows were expected to wear black for two years after their spouse died. But during the last six months of this period, they could add some trim in grey, white, or lavender. Cemetery Superstitions #2: Stop the Clock When someone died, clocks were stopped at the moment of death. For practical reasons, this would allow for an accurate doctor’s report and death certificate. But it was also said to be out of respect for the dead. Time had stopped for their mortal life and so their spirit must not be rushed into leaving too quickly by allowing them to notice the passage of time.
