Wilson, Committee Co-Chair D-L Stewart, Committee Co-Chair This study used narrative inquiry to focus on the lived experiences of undergraduate and graduate students who have experienced a significant death loss during their studies and have academically persisted in the face of adversity. The purpose of this research was to understand and describe how undergraduate and graduate students academically persist within higher education after a significant death loss. Providing this affirmative narrative illuminated the educational resilience that occurs following a death loss experience. Using educational resilience as the conceptual model and Schlossberg’s transition theory as the theoretical framework, the overarching research question that guided this study was: What are the narratives of bereaved college students who academically persist in the face of adversity? Participants included seven undergraduate and graduate students from three institutions of higher education across the United States. Participants engaged in two semi-structured interviews and an electronic journaling activity to share their death loss experience. Interviews were conducted face-to-face and virtually. Composite narratives were used to present the data from this study. The seven participants in this study were highlighted through four composite characters who met monthly at a Death Café. -

Cynthia Ozick’s protagonist Ruth Puttermesser is determined to find herself an ancestor. She needs someone who represents a past that can define her present. Owning a past is one way of defining what constitutes Jewishness. Edward Shapiro makes it clear what exactly makes Jewish identity problematic: “the problem of Jewish identity lies in the question whether Jewishness is a matter of religion, history, culture or ethnicity” ( Introduction , 286). Jews of all places and all times have struggled with the question of what defines the Jewish self. This question has different answers for different Jews at different times and in different places and it is true that, as Jonathan Rosen says, “every generation has its own story to tell” (257). -

International Web Journal Revue internationale www.sens-public.org Reality TV in Bulgaria: Social and Cultural Models and National Peculiarities MARIA POPOVA Abstract: The Reality TV appearance results from the media content changes, the infotainment development, the media use enlargement, the creation of quality, mass, thematic universal media products, sold at for low costs and for big profits. The Reality TV significant contribution is the discrepancy between public and private, the viewers’ possibility to see themselves and their problems into participants’ behavior. Although the Reality TV shows present voyeurism, scandal and conflict, media audience may control the program narrative. These programs are entertainment form, but they engage the society with charity, define the media agenda setting, and present definitive socio-cultural models, national peculiarities, which answer to the media audience needs, which are general as cultural sense and social behavior. There are different Reality TV forms worldwide. Most of them represent local edition for the local media audience. In Bulgaria the Reality TV started in 2004 and it has had significant influence of the media content ever since. The Reality TV places substantial problems at the media sphere, connected with media reliability, media post-colonialism, media manipulation, and media pluralism. English The Form and Feeling of Leonard Michaels’ Jewish-American Literature Harrison Hall Mentor: Nancy Berg The conventional narrative to describe Jewish-American literature tracks a departure and possible return to a Jewish culture and heritage. However, the twentieth¬ to twenty- first century writer Leonard Michaels did not display such a shift. In the 1960s, his style evoked what he termed the “weird delirium” of a counter-culture in New York City. His early stories draw heavily on his onomatopoeic conception of the Yiddish language and describe cultural Jews living and fighting in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Later in his life, Michaels adopted a simpler style and set his final collection, The Nachman Stories, in California. This change led some to criticize Michaels for abandoning literature more obviously aligned with mid-twentieth century Jewish-American experience. -

His literary language acts as effective means for describing the critical historical aspects of Latin America because the legacy of colonialism had destroyed so many important traces of the native culture of that area. This has led him to search for his identity by looking at various periods, before and after colonization. Because of this, the historical and cultural issues were his main thematic subject matters; such as savagely fought wars of independence, bloody conflict between the political parties, massacre of banana workers, deplorable effects of Hispanic culture on the community. Keywords: colonialism, plagues, cultural values, power of love, skeptical rationalism. 1. Introduction Marquez’s literary discourse actually creates a microcosm of Latin America, portraying the essence of the continent with all its aspects such as ethnicity, social norms and conventions, economic problems, destructive domination of colonial and imperialistic powers and civil wars that led to a series of insecurities and poverty in the community. In fact, whatever he has presented in his works is related to the realities of the continent that have been portrayed in his fictional world. -

Examining an author’s life can inform and expand the reader’s understanding of a novel. Biographical criticism is the practice of analyzing a literary work through the lens of an author’s experience. In this lesson, explore the author’s life to understand the novel more fully. 1 Ernest Hemingway grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, one of six children. In Lesson One 1917, the year President Wilson declared war on Germany, Hemingway graduated from high school. Instead of going to college, he became a FOCUS: reporter for a small newspaper. As a journalist, Hemingway learned to write concisely, using active verbs and brief, clear paragraphs. Many young Biography men were entering the military, but Hemingway’s vision did not meet military standards. Instead, he applied to the Red Cross as an ambulance driver and, in 1918, found himself in France and then in Italy. A Farewell to Arms, published in 1929, draws on the details of his wartime injury, his friendships, and his love affairs. ?? Discussion Activities Listen to The Big Read Audio Guide. Students should take notes as they listen. Ask them to present the three most important points they learned from the Audio Guide. Distribute Reader’s Guide essays, “Introduction to the Novel,” “Ernest Hemingway, 1899- 1961,” and “Hemingway and World War I.” Divide the class into groups. Assign one essay to each group. After reading and discussing the essays, groups will present what they have learned to the class. Ask students to add creative twists to make their presentations memorable. ??
