Sawtooth National Forest Credit to Tony Baril 2015 Share the Experience Dixie National Forest Recreation Fee Program Accomplishment Highlights 2016

From Guard Station to Cabin Rental Once home to Forest Service employees stationed in remote areas, guard stations turned cabin rentals offer thousands of visitors the chance to enjoy a night in the backcountry with some of the comforts of home. On the Dixie National Forest, four cabins provide exciting opportunities in the world-renowned landscapes of Southern . Valley - Centrally located within the recreation area bearing the same name, the this rental has nearby opportunities for fishing at the reservoir and numerous non-motorized trails providing access into the Pine Valley Wilderness. Jones Corral – This rental is a great base for hikers, hunters, cyclists, horseback riders, and off-highway vehicle Podunk Guard Station, enthusiasts due to its proximity to Mount Dutton. Podunk – This rental offers access to the East Fork and nearby fishing at Tropic Reservoir. Cowpuncher – This rental was closed several years ago due to fire but is currently being rebuilt and expected to open Interior of in summer 2017. A yurt provides interim accommodations. Pine Valley Recreation fee revenue from the rental of these sites directly supports operations and maintenance of these exceptional destinations. This includes approximately $14,000 in supplies and $11,500 to maintain and repair these historic structures.

Recreation Fee Dollars Recreation fee dollars are an investment in outdoor recreation. They support and enhance: • Public safety Interpretation • Recreation site maintenance and improvements at Jones • Educational experiences Corral • Informational wayside exhibits • Youth programs and partnerships • Interpretive programs Current and future generations benefit as 80-95% of the funds are reinvested in the facilities and services that visitors enjoy, use, and value.

Forest Service Accomplishment Highlights 2016 Intermountain Region

Recreation Events & Guides The Forest processed, administered, and monitored 17 recreation event permits. One of the recreation events was in August 2016, when Stage 1 of the Tour of Utah, an internationally renowned road bike race, passed through the Cedar City Ranger District. The guided opportunities on the Forest include off-highway vehicle trail rides, bicycling, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and horseback riding. In 2016, the Forest authorized and monitored 58 Barker Lake outfitter and guide permits with the help of approximately of recreation special use fee funds.
