For more information, please contact [email protected]. i Organizations of Knowledge about the Orient in German and British Romanticism 1780-1820 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the various literary modes in which German and British Romantic literature and culture organize knowledge about Islam and the Middle East. I explore how the Orient exceeds and troubles the “place” it is given in historical and geographical classification systems. I argue that many Romantic writers challenge the constructedness of the Oriental narrative during their time, thus questioning what really constitutes knowledge and the limits of knowledge. In this context, I re-evaluate Edward W. Said’s socio-historical generalizations regarding Orientalism as a form of Western control over the East. While studies on Romantic Orientalism have focused on representations of knowledge about India and Africa, little attention has been paid to the significance of Islam, the Ottoman Empire, and Arabic language and poetry for Romanticism. My literary corpus consists of Johann Gottfried von Herder’s Ideen zur Philosophie der Geschichte der Menschheit (1784-1791), Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s West-östlicher Divan and the Noten und Abhandlungen zu Besserem Verständnis (1819), Lord G. Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage Canto II (1812), and the The Giaour (1816). I also examine travelogues and philhellenic dramas of the 1820s, such as John Cam Hobhouse’s A Journey Through Albania (1813), and John Howard Payne’s Ali Pacha; or, the Signet Ring (1822), and their representations of an important but often neglected political figure, Ali Pasha of Yannina. In each chapter, I illustrate how the authors confront and question the (im)possibility of knowledge of the Other, and in turn criticize Western culture’s reception of the Orient and the practice of Orientalism. ii Keywords: Orientalism, Romanticism, Knowledge, Representation, J.G. von Herder, J.W. von Goethe, Lord G. My translation practice throughout the dissertation is to cite the standard English translation of a text, should one be available. For example, in Chapter Two and Chapter 4 I cite sources that provide good translations of the original text. Chapter One is a bit problematic, as the complete English translation of the original German text dates from 1800 and is therefore a bit archaic for today’s reader. Nevertheless, I use this translation but also offer my own translation or alteration of the 1800 translation to ease the reading process. For the most part, unless otherwise indicated, all translations are my own. 1 INTRODUCTION: Situating Romantic Orientalism “This crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take a while.” George W. Bush “The Romantics’ image of the East, which flourished and persisted for so long in the public imagination as a riot of colour, sumptuousness, and savage ferocity; harems and seraglios; heads chopped off and women thrown into sacks into the Bosphorous; feluccas and brigantines flying the Crescent banner, roundness of azure domes and soaring whiteness of minarets; viziers, odalisques, and eunuchs; cooling springs beneath palms; giaours with their throats slit; captive women subjected to the victor’s ravenous lust.

    An Ethics Of Discomfort: Supplementing Ricœur On Translation Lisa Foran School of Philosophy, University College Dublin Abstract: This article compares Paul Ricœur and Jacques Derrida on the theme of translation and in particular the ethical implications of the different ways in which they approach the untranslatable. While Ricœur’s account of translation as linguistic hospitality does offer a model for an ethical encounter with the other, I argue that this account does not go far enough. My central claim is that Ricœur’s treatment of translation overemphasizes the movement of appropriation and integration. While it may not be his intention, this emphasis could lead to a certain kind of complacency that would challenge the ethical claims Ricœur makes in favour of translation as a paradigm. I propose to supplement Ricœur’s hospitality with Derrida’s untranslatable, in order to create a situation of constant discomfort thereby guarding against ethical complacency. Résumé: Cet article compare les approches que Ricœur et Derida font du thème de la traduction en abordant en particulier les implications éthiques de leurs manières différentes d’aborder la question de l’intraduisible. Si le traitement ricœurien du problème de la traduction en termes d’hospitalité langagière offre le modèle d’une rencontre éthique de l’autre, je soutiens que cette approche ne va pas assez loin. Mon argument central est que, dans son traitement de la traduction, Ricœur met exagérément l’accent sur le mouvement d’appropriation et d’intégration. Même si cette emphase n’est peut-être pas intentionnelle, elle pourrait conduire à une certaine suffisance susceptible de remettre en question le pladoyer éthique de Ricœur en faveur de la traduction comme paradigme.

For centuries, it was mostly elaborated by translators and was always prescriptive, that is, aiming at defining the conditions for “good” translating. Actually, while it would be tempting to take the emergence of “descriptive translation studies” – to mention Gideon Toury’s (1995) most celebrated contribution to the field – as the birthmark of the study of translation as an autonomous discipline, one could argue that translation studies remain till now dependent on prescription in many ways, as remarks Lawrence Venuti (2000: 4). We find within the field of translation studies a much larger proportion of active translators than, say, the proportion of creative writers within the field of literary studies.

The research aims to enquire into the ideas that were crucial for the formation of mythology into discipline. The research explores the role of the romantic philosopher and philologist Friedrich Creuzer’s arguments in relation to the history of science of mythology. The findings of the research illustrate the impact of the different positions in the debates surrounding mythology in the age of German Romanticism and German Idealism on the development of the humanities as a discipline. At the same time as he was studying the symbolism and mythology of the ancients he was acutely influenced by romantic ideas. We suggest that this fact is crucial for the interpretation of the history of mythology as a subject and as a discipline along with the complex interactions between historical, philological and philosophical arguments in Creuzer’s work. Associated with the act of exposing herself to the goddess Demeter, Baubo came to epitomize questions about concealment and unveiling in the budding fields of archaeology, philology, psychoanalysis and literary theory. As I show in my dissertation, Baubo did not exist as a coherent mythical figure in antiquity. Rather, the nineteenth-century notion of Baubo was mediated through a disparate array of ancient and contemporary sources centered on the notion of sexual vulgarity. Baubo emerged as a modern amalgam of ancient parts, a myth of a myth invested with the question of what modernity can and should know about ancient Greece. The dissertation centers on the 1989 excavation of the so-called Baubo statuettes, a group of Hellenistic votive figurines discovered at Priene, in modern-day Turkey. The group adheres to a consistent and unique iconography: the face of the female figures is placed directly onto their torso, giving the impression that the vulva and chin merge. Based on the statuettes’ “grotesque- obscene” appearance, archaeologist concluded that they depicted Baubo, the woman who greeted Demeter at Eleusis when the goddess was searching for her abducted daughter Persephone. According to late antique Church Fathers, Demeter refused the locals’ offerings of food and drink until Baubo cheered her up by lifting her skirt, exposing herself to the goddess.

    Reflexive Translation Studies Reflexive Literature and Translation Literature and Translation In the past decades, translation studies have increasingly focused on the ethical dimension of translational activity, with an emphasis on reflexivity to assert the role of the researcher in highlighting issues of visibility, creativity and ethics. In Reflexive Translation Studies, Silvia Kadiu investigates the viability of theories that seek to empower translation by making visible its transformative dimension; for example, by championing the visibility of the translating subject, the translator’s right to creativity, the supremacy of human translation or an autonomous study of translation. Inspired by Derrida’s deconstructive thinking, Kadiu presents practical ways of challenging theories that suggest reflexivity is the only way of developing an ethical Reflexive translation. She questions the capacity of reflexivity to counteract the power relations at play in translation (between minor and dominant languages, for example) and problematises affirmative claims about (self-)knowledge by using translation itself as a Translation process of critical reflection. In exploring the interaction between form and content, Reflexive Translation Studies promotes the need for an experimental, multi-sensory and intuitive practice, which Studies Silvia Kadiu invites students, scholars and practitioners alike to engage with theory productively and creatively through translation. Vroon, Chair Developing poetry into a form of theurgy (“divine work,” from the Greek θεουργία) is perhaps the most heraldically proclaimed yet scantly defined preoccupation of the Russian Symbolist poet Viacheslav Ivanov (1866-1949). The Symbolist movement’s philosophical progenitor, Vladimir Solov’ev (1853-1900), sounded the clarion call for theurgic art in his treatise Crisis of Western Philosophy (1874), however the concept of theurgy dates to late antiquity, when the Neoplatonist philosophers Iamblichus (c. 245–c. 325 CE) and Proclus (412– 485 CE) posited theurgic ritual as superior to theological discourse. While it has been established that Ivanov followed Solov’evian paradigms in creating theurgic art, the Neoplatonic context of Ivanov’s engagement with theurgy has remained hitherto unexplored in Slavist scholarship. This dissertation argues for Neoplatonic theurgy as an active constituent in Ivanov’s poetics and theory of the symbol. Being an accomplished classical historian and philologist as ii well as a poet and theoretician, Ivanov incorporated both Solov’evian and Neoplatonic theurgic ideas into his highly allusive, richly symbolic, and archaically stylized poetry. Neoplatonism supplied Ivanov with a notion of the symbol as a conduit of divine mysteries, a mythopoetic device, and a functional element of ritual practice.
