Vroon, Chair Developing poetry into a form of theurgy (“divine work,” from the Greek θεουργία) is perhaps the most heraldically proclaimed yet scantly defined preoccupation of the Russian Symbolist poet Viacheslav Ivanov (1866-1949). The Symbolist movement’s philosophical progenitor, Vladimir Solov’ev (1853-1900), sounded the clarion call for theurgic art in his treatise Crisis of Western Philosophy (1874), however the concept of theurgy dates to late antiquity, when the Neoplatonist philosophers Iamblichus (c. 245–c. 325 CE) and Proclus (412– 485 CE) posited theurgic ritual as superior to theological discourse. While it has been established that Ivanov followed Solov’evian paradigms in creating theurgic art, the Neoplatonic context of Ivanov’s engagement with theurgy has remained hitherto unexplored in Slavist scholarship. This dissertation argues for Neoplatonic theurgy as an active constituent in Ivanov’s poetics and theory of the symbol. Being an accomplished classical historian and philologist as ii well as a poet and theoretician, Ivanov incorporated both Solov’evian and Neoplatonic theurgic ideas into his highly allusive, richly symbolic, and archaically stylized poetry. Neoplatonism supplied Ivanov with a notion of the symbol as a conduit of divine mysteries, a mythopoetic device, and a functional element of ritual practice. With the aid of theurgically charged symbols, Ivanov sought to construe Dionysus and the Orphic mystery rites associated with him as predecessors to Christ and the Christian sacraments. Ivanov’s theurgic project is particularly exemplified by “Suspiria,” a poetic cycle which draws symbolic parallels between Orphic and Christian rituals. The epigraph to “Psyche,” a poem contained in the cycle, features a quotation from the Orphic gold tablets (ancient leaves of gold foil bearing hexametrical post-mortem instructions for initiates into Dionysian mystery cults), which Ivanov discusses in theurgic terms in his philological treatise Dionysus and Predionysianism. Cross-referencing Ivanov’s philological and poetic works reveals that his research on ancient theurgy provided material that he re-deployed as theurgic symbols in his poetry. The “Suspiria” cycle’s streamlining of Orphic mystery rites with Christian sacraments is not merely a representation of a historical lineage, but an enactment of theurgic ritual through symbolic poetry. iii The dissertation of Jeffrey T. The “Bad Poet” I recall an informal conversation with a senior colleague several years ago, before I started working on my dissertation, that has been formative in the development of my work. I had begun doing research on Neoplatonist philosophy, and had discovered what I thought to be some astounding parallels with Russian Symbolism that had gone unnoticed in the scholarship on the Symbolist movement. Over a watery cup of campus store coffee, I excitedly hashed out my plans for delving into the notion of theurgy in Russian Symbolism further than prior scholars had attempted. What was needed, I contended, was a thorough investigation of the significance of the Neoplatonist theurgists to Ivanov and the other classically inclined Symbolists. Upon exhaustively sketching the trajectory of my proposed work – which would first review the centrality of the symbol to theurgic Neoplatonism, then uncover the earlier and previously undetected theurgic strain in Russian culture introduced through the Church Slavonic translations of the Pseudo-Dionysian corpus, and, finally, apply this philosophically, theologically and historically broadened framework for theurgy to Ivanov’s early poetry and theory of the symbol – he emitted a guffaw. Then came the succinct reply: “But you know Ivanov is a bad poet, right? Why do you need to do all

Did you say to men, ‘worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah’?’” (Sura 5:116).1 It is of note here that not only the strict mono- theistic religion of Islam objected to the Christian worshipping of Jesus as God, but it was commonly believed that Christians also worshipped his mother, Mary, as a goddess. This may have been the result of a mis- understanding of the term Theotokos, literally meaning “God-bearer”, but also means “Mother of God”, which was attributed to Mary by the Christians, who used the phrase Theotokos in their liturgical worship. Likewise, in Protestant theology, there was a reaction to the excessive adoration of the Virgin Mary in the non-liturgical devotions of the churches of the Latin West, which was termed “Mariolatry.” However, as Jaroslav Pelikan noted, the Eastern churches commemorated and cel- ebrated Mary as the Theotokos in their liturgical worship and hymnology.2 The place of the Theotokos in the liturgical worship of the Eastern Chris- tian churches does not only show the spiritual relation between the Virgin Mother and the people who commemorate her, but it is primarily a creedal affirmation of the Christology of the believers praying those hymns addressed to the Theotokos.

I conceived of a treatise on dry Theology comparing Eastern Orthodox with Western Christian Theological concepts and ancient arguments. I envisioned reviewing much material containing much sound and fury but signifying nothing. However, as I began to review material on this subject I began to appreciate the deep importance of this subject matter and also how far away from Holy Scripture the church has strayed. As a Christian counselor I see a sound grasp of this subject matter as being vital to emotional, mental, and spiritual well being.

The Greek talked about Elysium, the land of the blessed, in which good people would be able to live without worries. Germanic tribes dreamed about Valhalla, a splendid palace, where the warriors would feast on the flesh of boars and drink liquor. They would spent their days with sports, fighting, and hunting. Muslims are looking forward to a garden with abundant food to eat, wine to drink, and noble virgins to serve them. Many have tried or are still trying to create a paradise of their own on this earth. In any case, many yearn for complete satisfaction and perfect bliss. The first two chapters of Scripture talk about a paradise that humanity has lost, the last two chapters about a paradise which we may gain. I. Time and Place of the New Paradise • Rev. 20-21 After the Millennium, when Satan and his followers will be destroyed, a new heaven and a new earth will be created (Rev. 21:1). • Rev. 21:1-2 The new paradise will be found on planet earth, probably because it was here that the drama of redemption unfolded, and it was here that Jesus had lived and had been crucified. II. The Features of the New Paradise 1. The City (Rev. 21:10-27) The New Jerusalem reminds us of the garden of Eden and the temple, and it replaces both. In addition, it is found in stark contrast to the great, but wicked city Babylon (Rev 18:10, 21).

Jack Haney's Introduction to the Russian Folktale is the first volume of an ambi- tious project to translate anew Aleksandr Afans'ev's Russkie narodnye skazki. To help the North American reader cross over into the world of the Russian tale, it discusses the collecting and publication of Russian tales, performers and performance, tale con- tent, and the probable mythic and ritual basis of tales. Haney performs an especially valuable service by concentrating on the Russian perspective on this genre. Folktales are ubiquitous and one of the richest and most varied narrative types. They can be, and have been, approached in many ways. The Russian approach is probably the least familiar to the North American reader and the one most in need of explication. Folktales tend to be associated with the past, either the historical past or the past of an individual, namely childhood. In the West, Bruno Bettelheim's Uses of Enchant- ment and the works of Marie von Franz have encouraged us to look at tales in the con- text of human development, to see parallels between the psychological growth of the child and the adventures of tale heroes. More recently, Jack Zipes and Marina Wamer have drawn our attention to the political dimension of tales, the messages beneath the surface and even the commercial intent behind the folktale versions produced in film studios.

    Death and the Afterlife in Homer Death and what happens after death are universal concerns for humanity; around the world different cultures and religions contemplate our existence, and try to make sense of both our place in the world and our deaths. Although we no longer (for the most part) follow the religious beliefs of the ancient Greeks and Romans, their exploration of mortality and the afterlife can nonetheless be emotionally powerful and meaningful for us. In what follows, we will consider the presentation of death and the afterlife in some of the earliest Greek literature, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. The most common name for the underworld was Hades, a personified god and brother of Zeus, but also a place to which the souls of departed mortals go. Hades is in fact far more commonly mentioned as the underworld than as a personified god in Greek literature, although we do see him as an actual character in some myths, most famously in the story of the abduction of Persesphone by Hades, a tale told in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. In post-classical times, the term Hades was adopted by Christian authors, including the early Church Fathers, Dante and Milton, to refer to the Christian concept of Hell. The term used is the same, but it is important to distinguish between the Christian conception of Hell and Hades. For Christians, Hell is a place to which the souls of the wicked descend after death, whereas the souls of the good are taken to Heaven to be with God. The ancient Greek concept is extremely different.

Seeking to establish the coherence and utility of the paradoxical language characteristic of the received christological tradition (e.g. the impassible Word became passible flesh and suffered impassibly), it argues that the doctrine of divine apatheia illuminates the apocalyptic and soteriological dimension of the incarnate Son’s passible life more effectively than recent reactions against it. The first chapter explores the Christology of Cyril of Alexandria and the meaning and place of apatheia within it. In light of the christological tradition which Cyril epitomized, the second chapter engages contemporary critiques and re-appropriations of impassibility, focusing on the particular contributions of Jürgen Moltmann, Robert W.     Mysticism and Greek Monasticism By JOHANNES RINNE There is reason to assert that Christian mysticism is as old as Christianity itself. In the Pauline epistles, e.g., there are obvious signs of this fact. The later Christian mysticism has, in a high degree, been inspired by these ele- ments and likewise by various corresponding thoughts in the Johannine writings, which traditionally are interpreted from this angle and which have played a central role especially for the Orthodox Church.' In the light of the above-mentioned circumstances, it seems fully natural that there exists, from the very beginning, a clear connection also between mysticism and Christian monasticism. It has been pointed out by certain authors that the role of mystical visions is of essential and decisive significance also as regards the development from the stage of the hermits of the deserts to that form of life which, in the proper sense of the word, is characterised as monastic. There is, generally speaking, no possibility to understand correctly the intentions and the thoughts of the great pioneers of monasticism, unless one takes into account the mystically visionary factors. To this end it is neces- sary, furthermore, to penetrate in an inner, spiritual way, into the holy sym- bolism of the monastic tradition and into the sacred legends of its history.2 In other words, it is necessary to keep constantly in mind the visionary factor and to remember that the pioneers of monastic life, as a rule, are men of which it may be said that they have their conversation in heaven: on the mystical level of vision they converse with the angels as the representatives of the heavenly world and as those organs, by means of which the principles of monastic life are transmitted and given to the men of mystical visions.' The research aims to enquire into the ideas that were crucial for the formation of mythology into discipline. The research explores the role of the romantic philosopher and philologist Friedrich Creuzer’s arguments in relation to the history of science of mythology. The findings of the research illustrate the impact of the different positions in the debates surrounding mythology in the age of German Romanticism and German Idealism on the development of the humanities as a discipline. At the same time as he was studying the symbolism and mythology of the ancients he was acutely influenced by romantic ideas. We suggest that this fact is crucial for the interpretation of the history of mythology as a subject and as a discipline along with the complex interactions between historical, philological and philosophical arguments in Creuzer’s work.
