In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 ABSTRACT In this thesis, I examine how a reading of the later philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein can be of use to the reflective practitioner of literary translation. Wittgenstein, whilst a key figure in twentieth-century philosophy, remains peripheral to the field of translation studies and I argue that his later work, because it deals with the nature of language and meaning, is potentially of great significance: the story that Wittgenstein tells can change the field. It can rid translators of pictures of translation that are detrimental to literary translation and can also offer tools that will facilitate the task of literary translation, such as: the language-game; the form of life; the surveyable representation. In Chapter 1, I discuss the relation between philosophy and translation studies, presenting the later work of Wittgenstein, in particular the 1953 Philosophical Investigations. In Chapters 2, 3 and 4, I relate Wittgenstein’s work to translation by examining respectively: the reading for translation of the source text; the writing of the target text; the theorising of the target text. In Chapter 5, I draw conclusions. In the central three chapters, I offer case studies of the translation of the poetry of Eduard Mörike and of the New Testament to illustrate my arguments. He was initially recommended to me by Michael Finnissy, who informed me in conversation that Wittgenstein had been inspirational to him in his work as a composer. My intellectual position at that time was Thomist, following the thought of Thomas Aquinas. Friends in the Dominican Order, of which I was for a time a member, later recommended reading Wittgenstein as a way of approaching Aquinas’s thought and I was influenced by my reading of Fergus Kerr (1988) and Gareth Moore (1998). When my professional interests turned to translation, I used my reading of Wittgenstein as a way of approaching the texts on which I was working, for example, in my translations from Martin Luther (Gledhill and Wilson, 2007), where I sought to play the same language-games in my translations that I found in Luther’s sermons. My motivation for researching translation after Wittgenstein can therefore be seen as a coming together of my philosophical and professional interests. I would no longer call myself a Thomist, but I continue to turn to the writings of Wittgenstein.     An Ethics Of Discomfort: Supplementing Ricœur On Translation Lisa Foran School of Philosophy, University College Dublin Abstract: This article compares Paul Ricœur and Jacques Derrida on the theme of translation and in particular the ethical implications of the different ways in which they approach the untranslatable. While Ricœur’s account of translation as linguistic hospitality does offer a model for an ethical encounter with the other, I argue that this account does not go far enough. My central claim is that Ricœur’s treatment of translation overemphasizes the movement of appropriation and integration. While it may not be his intention, this emphasis could lead to a certain kind of complacency that would challenge the ethical claims Ricœur makes in favour of translation as a paradigm. I propose to supplement Ricœur’s hospitality with Derrida’s untranslatable, in order to create a situation of constant discomfort thereby guarding against ethical complacency. Résumé: Cet article compare les approches que Ricœur et Derida font du thème de la traduction en abordant en particulier les implications éthiques de leurs manières différentes d’aborder la question de l’intraduisible. Si le traitement ricœurien du problème de la traduction en termes d’hospitalité langagière offre le modèle d’une rencontre éthique de l’autre, je soutiens que cette approche ne va pas assez loin. Mon argument central est que, dans son traitement de la traduction, Ricœur met exagérément l’accent sur le mouvement d’appropriation et d’intégration.     Former president of Australian bishops’ conference dies unexpectedly ADELAIDE, Australia (CNS) — Retired Archbishop Philip Wilson, former president of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference who served as archbishop of Adelaide for 17 years, died Jan. 17. He was 70. The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference said that while the archbishop had suffered a series of health problems in recent years, including cancer, his death “was unexpected.” Adelaide Archbishop Patrick O’Regan noted that while his predecessor had been charged with failing to respond adequately to allegations of child sexual abuse while a priest, he was acquitted of all charges. “A harrowing period of allegations, charges, conviction and eventually acquittal was a significant chapter on Philip’s life, but his record of supporting and advocating on behalf of victims and survivors is part of his legacy,” Archbishop O’Regan said. “Philip knew what pain many people had endured and suffered as a result of the sickening actions of some within the church. He was part of the solution, and widely recognized as such.” In July 2018, Archbishop Wilson resigned as archbishop of Adelaide Archdiocese after being convicted of failing to report allegations of child sexual abuse by a priest in the 1970s. Although he maintained his innocence and appealed the ruling, Archbishop Wilson said at the time that “there is just too much pain and distress being caused by my maintaining the office of archbishop of Adelaide, especially to the victims of Father (James) Fletcher.” In December 2018, an appeals court overturned his conviction. He served as bishop of Wollongong from 1996 to 2001, and, after his death Wollongong Bishop Brian Mascord asked for prayers “for Philip, the Wilson family and the Archdiocese of Adelaide at this very sad time.” Sydney Archbishop Anthony Fisher recalled Archbishop Wilson’s “paternal” care of the other bishops when he was president of the bishops’ conference.

Introduction Among the literary papers of the late Edith Simon (1917–2003) is a typescript essay entitled “On Translating Thomas Mann.” Internal evidence suggests that it was written in the late 1960s, approximately 40 years after Mann’s monumental Der Zauberberg (1924) was translated into English as The Magic Mountain (1928) by Helen Tracy Lowe-Porter. Simon’s essay is critical of the quality of Lowe-Porter’s translation of The Magic Mountain and is full of suggested re-translations as well as a closer look at several images embedded in German culture, e.g. language; literature, mytho- logy/folklore – that Mann drew upon for “special effects” in the epic novel that ensured his nomination for and acceptance of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929 (the politicized head of the Nobel Committee cited Buddenbrooks as the reason for the award). Simon wrote her essay at a time when Lowe-Porter’s rendition of Mann’s major works was still garnering plaudits from reviewers. That essay by Simon, published here for the first time, and another shorter essay on writing historical fiction, are part of her creative legacy now archived within her art studio in Edinburgh, Scotland.

    CARDINAL SINS: HOW THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SEXUAL ABUSE CRISIS CHANGED PRIVATE LAW MAYO MORAN* ABSTRACT For several decades now, the unfolding of the Catholic Church sexual abuse crisis has been front-page news. It has wreaked havoc on hundreds of thousands of lives, cost the Church billions of dollars, and done irreparable harm to a once-revered institution. Along the way, it has also helped to transform the all- important private law of responsibility. When the crisis began to break in the early 1980s, the few survivors who sought legal redress faced a daunting array of obstacles. Limitations periods alone had the effect of barring almost all child sexual abuse claims. Immunities also helped to shield the Church. Private law itself was generally hostile to institutional liability, particularly where the harm resulted from the criminal act of an individual. All of that has changed. Among the catalysts for change within private law, the Catholic Church sex abuse crisis looms large. The scale of the crisis and the universal nature of the Church were certainly both important factors, but so too was the Church's response. From the initial impulse to cover up instances of abuse to choices made in the legal and political arenas, it appeared willing to do almost anything to protect itself. Yet the Church had traditionally bene®ted from special treatment precisely on the ground that it was not an ordinary, self-interested legal actor. The tension between the Church's mission and its approach to covering up abuse began to attract notice. Courts and legislators were prompted to act.

    Reflexive Translation Studies Reflexive Literature and Translation Literature and Translation In the past decades, translation studies have increasingly focused on the ethical dimension of translational activity, with an emphasis on reflexivity to assert the role of the researcher in highlighting issues of visibility, creativity and ethics. In Reflexive Translation Studies, Silvia Kadiu investigates the viability of theories that seek to empower translation by making visible its transformative dimension; for example, by championing the visibility of the translating subject, the translator’s right to creativity, the supremacy of human translation or an autonomous study of translation. Inspired by Derrida’s deconstructive thinking, Kadiu presents practical ways of challenging theories that suggest reflexivity is the only way of developing an ethical Reflexive translation. She questions the capacity of reflexivity to counteract the power relations at play in translation (between minor and dominant languages, for example) and problematises affirmative claims about (self-)knowledge by using translation itself as a Translation process of critical reflection. In exploring the interaction between form and content, Reflexive Translation Studies promotes the need for an experimental, multi-sensory and intuitive practice, which Studies Silvia Kadiu invites students, scholars and practitioners alike to engage with theory productively and creatively through translation.
