He was canonized in 1767 and is the patron saint of orphans. Biography Jerome was born in Venice, the son of Angelo Emiliani (popularly called Miani) and Eleonore Mauroceni. His father died when he was a teenager and ran away at the age of 15 to join the army. In 1508, he participated in the defense of Castelnuovo against the League of Cambray. He was appointed governor of a fortress in the mountains of Treviso, and while defending his post taken was made prisoner. His escape he attributed to the intercession of the Mother of God; and he made a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Treviso, in fulfillment of a vow, and left his chains as an offering.[1] He was then appointed podestà (Venetian magistrate) of Castelnuovo, but after a short time returned to Venice to supervise the education of his nephews. All his spare time was devoted to the study of theology and to works of charity. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1518. In the year of plague and famine (1528), he seemed to be everywhere and showed his zeal, especially for the orphans, whose number had so greatly increased.

Papal bull of Innocent IV, dated September Innocent IV, born Sinibaldo Fieschi in 1195, was Pope of the Catholic Church from 1243 until his death in 1254. This bull is addressed to the monastery of Moutiers-Saint-Jean de Réôme (in the village of Moutiers- Saint-Jean, Bourgogne). The document deals with the debts of the monastery and is dated 26 September 1252. Originally the bull would have been sealed with a lead bulla (now perished), from which the term bull is derived. Manuscript on vellum, 288 x 238 mm, written in 10 long lines of very calligraphic late Caroline script, lower right corner repaired with stitching, old fold lines and slashes indicating the document has been used; a 25 mm folded section across the bottom of the document contains two round holes, suggesting that it was once bound with other, probably similar, documents. There are two brief annotations on the verso, perhaps recording the scribe’s name (‘Guiellmo de…’).

JOSEPH” VENETIAN CATHOLIC STUDIUM 1 PREFACE Luigi Caburlotto (1817-1897) was a priest of action in the diocese of Venice, he had been a parish priest in S. Giacomo dell’Orio for twenty-two years, but for a longer period he was engaged in an educational work of assistance and redemption of the young ones,, mainly of those who were more exposed to the sad consequences of poverty and to the dangers of an inadequate moral formation. He founded the institute of the Daughters of St. Joseph to set up his undertaking and to ensure its continuity; after the necessary adaptations to the new social and cultural situations today this institute is still continuing with tenaciousness, intelligence and generous dedication along the furrow that he traced. A priest of action but inspired from above: the texts and the notes of his meditations and of his sermons, although with the limits of the biblical and theological culture of the time, show the evidence of his careful listening to the Word of God. Besides he was solicitous in the study and reflection on the problems that a wise education would put to those who meant to contribute to the maturation of the young consciences.
