I am delighted that you have chosen Germany’s capital city as the venue for this important international congress. Transplant medicine has made remarkable advances in recent years. A wide range of medical and technological innovations have helped to refine individual transplantation procedures, develop new ones, and keep success rates rising. All of this has meant new hope for many critically ill patients. However, the shortage of donor organs remains an enormous problem, and one that calls for both political and medical solutions. Germany’s parliament only recently passed legislation that makes comprehensive changes to the rules on organ donation. These are designed to promote public acceptance and thereby raise the number of donors. However, it is also vital that research in the area of transplant medicine continue to be stepped up. International exchange is playing a growing role in pursuit of that goal. Berlin is honored to be hosting this year’s International Congress of The Transplantation Society, a conference that brings international experts together to discuss both medical/scientific and ethical issues related to transplant medicine. As a renowned center of science and learning and home to a cutting-edge life sciences sector, Germany’s capital city offers ideal conditions for a successful and productive conference. The same is true of all aspects of your discipline, ranging from the German Heart Institute Berlin (DHZB), for instance, to the Charité’s highly regarded transplantation centers at its Mitte campus and Benjamin Franklin campus and the clinic for General, Visceral, and Transplant Surgery at the Virchow campus, headed by Professor Peter Neuhaus, who is your congress chair this year. With all this in mind, I would again like to welcome you to Berlin and to wish you both a productive and interesting exchange and, for our visitors from outside the city, a very pleasant stay and fresh inspiration when you return home. Klaus Wowereit Governing Mayor of Berlin 4 | 24TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE TRANSPLANTATION SOCIETY General General WELCOME MESSAGES Information WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE CONGRESS CHAIRS Dear Colleagues, It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 24th International Congress of The Transplantation Society in Berlin, Germany from July 15th – 19th, 2012. Following the exceptionally successful meetings in Boston, Sydney and Vancouver, we welcome you to a city which, twenty years after reunification has evolved into one of the most important capitals of Europe. Once the capital of Prussia and leading cultural center of the 1920s, today the new capital of Germany is characterized by its dazzling modernity and breathtaking architecture. Berlin is young, dynamic and bursting with joie de vivre. Few cities have been shaped to such an extent by history and undergone as much major transformation as Berlin. “Berlin is always in the process of becoming”, remarked historian Karl Scheffler. The same is true for transplantation. It is still evolving even though we are already in the 21st century. Therefore, the 24th International Congress of The Transplantation Society will promote the dialogue of experts from around the world. An attractive scientific program has been developed together with the Deutsche Transplantationsgesellschaft. The 24th Congress is designed for physicians, surgeons, scientists and organ procurement personnel, who are interested in clinical and scientific aspects of solid organ, cell and tissue transplantation. The program is developed to encourage the exchange of latest scientific and clinical information, and support an interchange of opinions regarding care and management issues, as well as socioeconomic, ethical and regulatory issues relevant to transplantation. We therefore cordially invite you and your colleagues together with your friends and family to experience Berlin. Your active participation in the scientific program will be the fundament for a successful event in 2012. With warmest regards, Peter Neuhaus Wolf Otto Bechstein Chair of the 24th International Congress Co-Chair of the 24th International Congress of The Transplantation Society of The Transplantation Society 24TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE TRANSPLANTATION SOCIETY | 5 General General Information SOCIETY INFORMATION TTS – The TransplanTATION SOCIETY The Transplantation Society is the premier international organization for the worldwide advancement of transplantation, which provides the focus for global leadership in this field through: • development of science and clinical practice • scientific communication • continuing education • guidance on ethical practice www.tts.org 6 | 24TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE TRANSPLANTATION SOCIETY General General SOCIETY INFORMATION Information Deutsche Transplantations- gesellschaft DTG – DeuTSCHE TRANSPLANTATIONSGESELLSCHAFT The German Transplantation Society (Deutsche Transplantationsgesellschaft, DTG) is a national organization of transplant professionals which is dedicated to the improvement of patient care by fostering clinical and basic research as well as education and advocacy in transplantation and organ donation. The Society represents all Transplantation centers in Germany which are accredited according to the German Transplantation Law. The Executive Board of the German Transplantation Society consists of the President, the President-Elect, the General Secretary, the Treasurer, and the Secretary. Newsletter November / December 2005 United Buddy Bears in Seoul Fotomontage At the beginning of October, the circle of United Buddy Bears was opened in Seoul (Korea) in the presence of many VIPs from the world of politics, business, arts and culture. In his speech, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Korea, Michael Geier, emphasised the special symbolic power of the bear for Korea, as it represents the first mother in the Korean myth of the Creation. The Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, sent a video message from the once divided city of Berlin to the guests at the opening ceremony: “15 years ago, the people of Germany were able to experience the joy of the peaceful reunification of our country. Today, we would wholeheartedly like to wish the people of Korea that they will also overcome the division in the not too distant future.“ It is for that reason that the 125 United Buddy Bears are promoting a peaceful coexistence at the Olympic Park on Peace Square until 9th November (the day when the Berlin Wall opened). South- and North Korea Hand in Hand Following long negotiations with the North Korean embassy in Berlin, the Buddy Bär Berlin GmbH was able to invite two renowned North Korean artists (see above) – with the kind support of Lufthansa – to Berlin. The bear was belatedly flown to Seoul, receiving a lot of attention as the sensational addition to the exhibition. On this occasion, the German Ambassador Michael Geier gave another speech on site, praising the great symbolism of the exhibition for the divided Korea.

  • General Władysław Sikorski As a Prime Minister of Polish Government in Exile
Humanities and Social Sciences 2016 HSS, vol. XXI, 23 (2/2016), pp. 9-32 April - June Arkadiusz ADAMCZYK1 GENERAL WŁADYSŁAW SIKORSKI AS A PRIME MINISTER OF POLISH GOVERNMENT IN EXILE. HONEST DEMOCRAT OR HEIR OF AUTHORITARIANISM The way in which Sikorski and his policy are remembered and judged by the vast majority of Poles owes much to the legend that has surrounded him since his tragic and mysterious death and has little to do with his real accomplishments.Sikorski succeeded in passing himself off as true democrat by throwing into doubt achievements of the Piłsudski adherents and by contesting the political system they created. In truth, the Prime Minister did nothing to introduce a democratic style of exercising power. To make things worse, in the exercise of power he quite deliberately made use of the same instruments once made use of by his predecessors, thus abusing it the same way they did. One is tempted to think that Sikorski was unable to liberate himself from the influence exerted on him by Józef Piłsudski. As a Prime Minister he failed to elaborate a model of exercising power different from that established by Piłsudski whom Sikorski admired and hated at the same time. In truth, he may have considered the model elaborated by Piłsudski as ideal worth copying. But the so- called July crisis of 1940 when there took place a clash between Sikorski and Piłsudski adherents which resulted in debilitating both sides of this conflict made it necessary for Sikorski to rely for the exercise of power on cooperation with traditional political parties.
