There are currently 25 office buildings under construction containing 7.9 million square feet of office space. Despite the fact that 56.3 per cent of that new supply has been pre-leased, there is significant pressure on the existing office inventory due to dis- closed and undisclosed backfill pressure. It outlines the project, the purpose of the public engagement, the activities we did, and a summary of what we heard at the events. A full list of comments received through public engagement is included in this report. This report does not outline what has happened as a result of the public engagement. That summary will be published at a later date, once all engagement has been completed and project plans have been finalized. Project overview In 2007, based on extensive citizen input, City Council adopted the Centre City Plan, a vision document that describes what the Centre City could look like in 30 years. The Centre City Plan is a coordinated strategy document that pulls together the vision for the Centre City along with strategies and actions relating to land use planning, economic, cultural, and social development, and governance. With the approval of the adoption of the Centre City Plan (CPC2007-049), it included a recommendation for regular monitoring and reporting. In January 2017 the Centre City Plan was identified as one of 28 Council policies to be amended. It’s time to review and refresh the original Centre City Plan. Calgary’s Centre City is the area south of the Bow River (including Prince’s Island Park) from 17th Avenue Southwest and 14th Street Southwest, to the Elbow River. -

CALGARY Cushman & Wakefield Global Cities Retail Guide Cushman & Wakefield | Calgary | 2018 0 Calgary has evolved into a home of luxury retailers, world class restaurants and one of Canada’s premier shopping destinations. Built on the strength of the energy sector and entrepreneurial community, Calgary will have one of the highest GDP growth rates and labour force participation rates of the major cities in Canada in 2018. Over the past 10 years the city has had the highest population growth of major cities in Canada, with 64% of these new migrants arriving from international destinations. Calgary’s GDP is expected to grow 1.8% in 2019 with retail sales anticipated to gain 2.4%. Calgarians are among the top earners in Canada and with a higher level of disposable income, the luxury retail market has thrived; gaining international attention from retailers looking to expand into Canada. Fifty International brands entered Canada in 2017 including Nordstrom Rack and Saks Fifth Avenue; both of which have opened locations in Calgary as it is the major urban centre for the entire southern half of the province of Alberta. The CORE remains one of the busiest shopping centres in the city but despite this pedestrian traffic, Calgary’s luxury retail is largely located in malls located outside of the downtown area such as Chinook Centre and Market Mall which are more easily accessible. Late in 2018, Paris-based luxury fashion retailer Louis Vuitton opened its first standalone store in Chinook Centre covering 4,450 square feet; and closed its concession at Holt Renfrew in Calgary’s CORE. -

The History of the Arusha Centre The Arusha Centre was founded in 1972, named after Julius Nyerere's speech about global justice issues in Arusha, Tanzania in 1969. We have been a meeting place for community members and activists throughout our history, offering programs, a resource library, funding, space for meetings, and affordable access to event supplies, button-making, stilts and costumes, tents, amplifiers, printing, and support. The Centre is an active tennant in the CommunityWise Resource Centre, a hub for nonprofits in Calgary providing inclusive, affordable, and equitable space and community development programs to support and strengthen diverse grassroots and non-profit members. Michael Miller-Lajeunesse contribute a grassroots community-inspired art piece to Arusha’s office symbolizing community connections, collaboration, and sustainability. Pre-1972: Early Roots Carol Sherwood, Arusha's first staff person explained: “We didn't start in 1972, but a couple of years before that. Our roots go back to the Calgary and District International Society ... who brought you the 'Miles for Millions' fundraising walks.” The staff at the CDIS wanted to incorporate development education in the walks to educate young people about “the split between the world's rich and poor.” 1972: Alliances Forming In the spring of 1972, the Cross Cultural Learner Centre from London, Ontario visited Calgary and provided an example to CIDA of a model for how they could effectively educate people in Alberta about developing countries. Thus, the core people who came together to start a Centre in Calgary were from: (1) the Miles for Millions group, and (2) a Local Initiatives project named 'NIDERK' sponsored by Calgary Interfaith.
