1. Sankara Nethralaya’s service at Tirupati through Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya The Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya (SSSN) which was established in the year 2009 by Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya Trust by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). This center has screened more than 11,983 new patients and has performed 4,210 cataract surgeries during the financial year 2018 -19 (FY 2017 -18: 11,642 new patients and 3,004 surgeries). This was a record year for our operations at SSSN, in terms of surgeries performed in a year. Mission for Vision Trust is playing a major role in mobilizing patients for free cataract surgeries at SSSN. Sankara Nethralaya is also exploring the possibilities of having an exclusive Mobile Eye Surgical Unit for the State of Andhra Pradesh, under the aegis of TTD. Discussions in this regard are progressing well and we hope this project would be a reality before the next financial year. 2. Aditya Birla Sankara Nethralaya & Kamalnayan Bajaj Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata, West Bengal: Both our centers at Kolkata have grown further in its stature by catering to more number of patients through their base hospitals and as well through community outreach programs. These centers together have screened more than 1, 17,234 new patients and performed 14,018 surgeries during the financial year 2018 -19. (FY 2017 - 18: more than 1, 05,207 new patients and 12,780 surgeries). 3. Sankara Nethralaya, Sricity, Tada, Andhra Pradesh: Our center at Sri City, catering to the needs of industrial workers and also the needs of the villagers living around this upcoming industrial town, has rendered services to more than 6,555 patients and has performed 97 cataract surgeries during the financial year 2018-19. 4. Suraj Sankara Nethralaya, Chetpet, Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu: Suraj Sankara Nethralaya, named in honor and as a token of gratitude to Shri Surajmal Jain, a well-known philanthropist, champion of social causes, Chairman of Acharya Shri Hasthi Aradhana Foundation (ASHA Foundation) and a long time well-wisher of Sankara Nethralaya, who has most generously donated the premise housing the new facility. Suraj SN assumes great importance as it would be dispensing world class eye care in a semi urban region and serving a large number of indigent patients from the neighboring villages, who do not have access to quality eye care.

17 MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Two well qualified and trained ophthalmologists supported by a well-trained and dedicated team of nursing, paramedical and administrative staff offer quality care for all eye ailments. The new facility has fully equipped operation theaters, General Ward beds and AC room. This facility was inaugurated by the district collector Shri K.S. Kandasamy, IAS on 20th September 2018. This center has offered services to 3,358 new patients as Out patients and performed 91 Cataract surgeries during the financial year 2018-19. CONCLUSION Financial Year 2018 – 2019 saw the Foundation completing 40 years in Service to our country. Under the inspiring and visionary leadership of Dr Badrinath, the year saw the Foundation embarking on new projects and expansion of its services besides setting a new record in financial performance and a new record in number of free services performed. True to its founding principle, the Foundation showed growth in all its areas of activity - World class eye care, Community Services, Research and Education – broadly recognized as the four pillars of the Foundation. The Foundation has recorded yet another satisfying performance with the hospital collection showing a growth of 6% in comparison to the previous financial year. The hospital collection crossed Rs. 200 crores for the first time. The number of free surgeries in the FY 2018-19 was 22810. Number of free surgeries as a percentage of total surgeries done was 36%. The Mobile Eye Surgery Units (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand), the brain child of Dr SS Badrinath, kept the flag of Sankara Nethralaya’s service to community flying high by performing 4520 totally free cataract surgeries in different villages across the 3 states. The Bhumi puja for the new Community Hospital at St. Thomas Mount was conducted on 23rd April 2018. The new facility would have a fully equipped out-patient facility, 8 operation theaters and 140 beds dedicated to totally free surgeries and service. In a moment that captured the spirit of the day, special guest of the event Shri Iravatham Mahadevan expressed that if only he had been 10 years younger he would have visited every home in the locality to mobilize funds for the noble endeavour. A close look at the inception, growth and 4 decades of service by Sankara Nethralaya would make it apparent that if something has been the consistent moving force for all the above, next only to the blessings of the Kanchi Acharyas, it is the boundless love to mankind, a strong sense of service, a no strings attached generosity and utmost faith in the institution exhibited by its donors and well wishers. It was a beautiful demonstration of this faith that was being showcased on the 20th of September 2018 in the small town of Chetpet in Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu, as the curtains went up on yet another major step in Sankara Nethralaya’s battle against blindness, in a semi urban area. The hospital, now named Suraj Sankara Nethralaya, was donated to Sankara Nethralaya, by Shri Surajmal Jain and his family. After required renovations the hospital started functioning from October 2018, serving the people from surrounding villages.

18 MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION

With clinical work, academics and research marching ahead with full speed, 2018-2019 was a busy and productive year for the organization. During the year, 78 Ophthalmologists got trained through the various Ophthalmology post graduate and fellowship programs. This is a proud achievement of the institution and reaffirmation of the Vision of Dr. Badrinath. Further, another 150 students graduated from different programs including Optometry, Medical Laboratory Technology, Business Administration, Nursing and Ophthalmic Dispensing. These are all indicators of the robustness of Sankara Nethralaya’s academic activities. Research work at Sankara Nethralaya has helped produce 2 Ph. D graduates this year. A further 15 students are pursuing their Ph.D. Numerous projects in Optometry (Binocular vision, Contact Lens and Myopia) and Ophthalmology (Dry eye, Keratoconus, Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma) are being carried out. A number of papers have been published on the research outcome in peer reviewed Indian and International journals. REACH – a school screening project supported by Orbis was completed this year. The 3-year project helped to screen 3 lakh school children studying in Corporation and government aided schools across Kanchipuram, Chennai and districts. The unique feature of the screening was inclusion of Binocular Vision Screening – the first of its kind in the world. 5% of the children required spectacles which were distributed through the project. 2018-19 was an impactful year for Sankara Nethralaya. Global projects involving Artificial Intelligence were started at the Institution in the fields of Diabetic Retinopathy and Glaucoma. The school screening program has received an extension of 3 more years which would help to revisit the districts and include more children under the program. Tata Trusts have extended another 3 years of support for the Mobile Eye Surgery Project in Jharkhand on seeing the impact the program is having on the ground. Our ophthalmologists and optometrists have represented Sankara Nethralaya in National and Global Forum with distinction. A new centre was added to the Organisation and a new Community hospital is under construction. The vision of Dr Badrinath is not only deep-rooted in the Institution but is urging the next generation to carry forward the philosophy of the hospital. HUMAN RELATIONS: The Founder, Dr. S. S. Badrinath and Dr Vasanthi Badrinath are the real force behind this great institution, continuously guiding and monitoring the progress of the institution in every sphere.
